Checkout our Croc Master GI Joe Classified Series review with tons of pics and a vintage figure comparison!
Since the GI Joe Classified Series Croc Master and Fiona is finally shipping to collectors around the globe, let’s take an in depth look at this vintage inspired figure! It seems like yesterday (not really!!!) when the Croc Master and Fiona were revealed but good things come to those who wait as this figure checks all of the boxes and could be in the running for best figure of the year. Before we count our chickens (oh wait…crocodiles) before they are hatched, there are still some amazing figures on the horizon that are just landing in collector’s hands. In fact, check out the GI Joe Classified Series Spirit review as these two figures have Hasbro hitting home runs!
Box and Art
As Hasbro revealed in their GI Joe Live Stream back on xxx, the beautiful window display boxes that the GI Joe Classified Series are known for are going away so we can count on a single hand the figures that remain before they fully transition into the windowless, plastic free box designs. That said, Croc Master and Fiona come in the extra wide, deluxe style window display box where you can see all of the weapons and accessories he is packed with. Fiona is beautifully laid out as she takes up a lot of the room in the box. With the new wave of figures that include Croc Master, Storm Shadow, Spirit, and the Cbra Officer, the backs of the boxes are updated in a new art style that adds several figures that have been produced in the last year, including Alley Vipers, BATS, and Barbecue. The only bummer about the updated box art is that they left no room for teasers like the old box art had!
Left Box Side
On the side of the box, starting from the top, you can see Croc Masters abilities, and has the following (which you can find on Hasbro’s Decoding the Classified Series part of their website):
- Level 3 Security: Characters with the SECURITY icon make sure important people, places, or things are protected.
- Level 2 Mele Weapons: Characters with the MELEE WEAPONS icon use weapons that smash things in close combat
- Level 3 Strength (yes the dude is jacked!): Characters with the STRENGTH icon possess immense physical power.
- Level 4 Animal Handling: Characters with the ANIMAL HANDLING icon train and use animals in combat and support roles.
It would be great if these figure came with actual file cards so you did not have to consult Hasbro’s website but it does make it a fun game to guess at what the icons mean if you are into that.
Right Box Front
With custom artwork by Luke Preece, he adds his unique styling to the bottom right and full right side of the box and we love the way the artwork bleeds over from the front to the side of the box. Luke really brings the figure to life in a muted blue and green color pallet that definitely goes along with the theme of the character and the feel of the box. With the Croc Master holding his classic whip in one hand and holding Fiona’s leash in the other, he gives you an intense stare down and although his beady little red eyes are also muted, this illustration is quite intimidating. Fiona is portrayed with razor sharp teeth that we are sure could do some damage if she got a hold of you! If you blink, you might have missed her matching red eye, which is a nice touch as the actual figure does not have red eyes but it makes the artwork that much better!
Right Box Side
On the side of the box, we get a fuller shot of the Croc Master in his crocodile clad uniform. His breathing apparatus is pretty massive and you cab see the tube coming over his left shoulder and around his back. You can almost feel the texturing coming out from the illustration as his shirt compliments Fiona’s skin so nicely. Although we can’t see the Croc Masters legs, we do see a shot of his waist with the killer looking belt with the crocodile eye for the belt buckle, which is obscured by his left arm from the from the front of the box.
One aspect that Hasbro does really well with their masked figures is brining out the detail and emotion through the facial coverings. Like we saw this the GI Joe Classified Series Firefly figure, you can tell that the Croc Master has a pensive and serious look as you can see the furrowed forehead lines and the eyebrow through the mask. There is some stitching on the top left of his head and you can only imagine that he found himself on the wrong end of a crocodile. The back of the mask sculpt reminds us of a bulldog where the skin is folding over on the back of the neck. The beady red eyes pierce your soul as the Croc Master gives you a major stare!
The breathing apparatus is painted in a nice brushed silver color and is massive on his face but we would not expect anything less! There is metal detail on the front of the device as well as some nice angled lines to make the piece more interesting and realistic! One of the cooler aspects to the design is the hose can be removed from the breathing device so you can display him with or without it. You will also notice the outline of his ears showing through the mask, giving it a more realistic look and feel where you can see some of the natural folds as it fits around his head.
Chest and Back
There are two shades of green paint app applied to his crocodile skinned tank top that give the appearance of an actual croc underside as they are two toned in real life. The red cobra symbol is set off by a large black circle that has a thick outer ring to it. The breathing tank plugs into a backpack port on his back and is removeable if you want to display the figure without it. The back has larger textures on it that have a sheen to them in the light, mirroring the back of a crocodile.
Arms and Shoulders
Croc Master has a very interesting shoulder sculpt as there are layers added to give him a more beefier look. Although you don’t notice them very much in real life, these close up shots really bring out the finer details but the odd layering effect gets lost and the muscle detail seems to flow nicely together.
His arms are asymmetrical, meaning that they are different on both sides and this is due to the wrist cuffs and gauntlet he is wearing on his right and left hands. On his right arm, he is wearing a standard silver wrist cuff and his left arm sports a crocodile gauntlet that is so apropos for the figure. He is wearing back gloves and, like the mask, you can see the finger detail through the gloves, which is a nice touch!
Do you find it odd to have a crocodile eye starring at you from his waist piece? If you do, this is not the figure for you! In all seriousness, the belt design is one of the major features of this figure. It is painted in the same silver color as this breathing apparatus and if it catches the light a certain way, it has a certain shimmer and shine to it. The eye in the middle resembles the eye of a crocodile and you can make out the red accents that go around it, giving the eye some depth and dimension. The yellow accent pieces on the side of the belt tie in with the eye very nicely and the red accent ties in with his eyes. If you look closely, the belt as a couple layers to it where the front piece where the eyes sits looks like it was welded from a piece of metal then attached to the belt.
The legs feature black pants that are form fitting with two different attachments for weapons on each leg! The right leg features a croc skin textured sheath for the knife to slot into, which is wrapped around his crocodile skinned boot (do you sense a theme here???). On his left leg, he has a croc skinned holster for his gun that wraps around his left thigh.
Keeping with the crocodile theme, he comes with croc skinned boots and with all of the croc texture on this figure, they did an excellent job with the small and large textures all around so that this look does not overwhelm the figure.
Weapons and Accessories
Croc Masters comes with a hook, whip, gun, knife, breathing aparatus, and, last but certainly not least, Fiona and her croc babies.
Croc Masters comes with a standard gun that looks like a Big Bore type revolver. Although it has the features of a revolver, it has teeth on the bottom of the barrel that give it more of a Sig Sauer SP2022 feel to it. It is small enough to not weigh him down and with quick access to it from the holster on his thigh, he can play quick draw and get the upper hand on any unsuspecting foe.
Croc Masters knife has the appearance of a Mark 3 Combat knife, which is used, in real life, exclusively by US Naval Forces. Needless to say, these veteran blades are not in the business of giving quarter. This knife as a terrific pummel that you can drive nails with if needed and the blade can be used as a pry bar too. These considerations aren’t always important in an outdoor knife, but they are crucial for underwater work, where you can imagine the Croc Master using in the swamps.
Whips can be made of a large variety of materials. most common is leather. Starting from the bottom, this bullwhip a big knob with a has a short, rigid handle, followed by a tapered, braided thong (the longest part of the whip), with the Cracker at the end. The bullwhip was originally used for herding as you can imagine with the scores of crocodiles he must deal with, his whip comes in handy!
Croc Master also comes with that is cast in a silver plastic. We are not certain if this is an actual tool that is used to pry open the mouth of a crocodile but the tool featured a handle with two bolts on either side. Given that this is used to grab a hold of a croc’s mouth, it does seem rather barbaric given the sharp nature of this hook
The Croc Masters leash is made to resemble a chain and cast in the same plastic as the hook. It features spikes around the collar and two leather pieces that give it a much bolder, more stylized look.
This girl, Fiona, steals the show as this is one of the best “pets” Hasbro has made in the line (sorry Timber, you are sloppy seconds now!)! She measures roughly 12 inches in length from the tip of her tail to her jaw and it absolute beautiful. The team at Hasbro did an amazing job capturing the likeness and texture of a crocodile. The snout is stout rather broad and her tail is long and laterally compressed. In a typical croc, there are upper and lower jaws each contains 19 teeth on either side. The fourth mandibular tooth fits into a notch in the upper jaw while the fifth upper tooth is the largest.
One of the coolest features is the opening and closing jaw! The realistic nature of the mouth is uncanny and the design of the tongue and inner parts of the mouth are spot on! The teeth are arranged in a such a way as to give her character as well as realism!
There are several textures on Fiona, which make her a very tactile figure, that range from larger dorsal scales on the trunk (otherwise known as the back). The body is covered with an exoskeleton of horny thick epidermal scales provided with dermal bony plates. Like in real life, Fiona’s limbs are pentadactyl with five fingers and four toes. The fingers are webbed at the base and the outer toes are broadly webbed.
She features articulation on her neck, he body, legs, feet, and tail, which gives you many options to pose her! She also comes apart in 3 pieces as shown below.
Fiona comes with two little croc babies that are white and green and so darn cute! They are unnamed so you can feel free to name them how you like. We are calling the green, Green Bean, and the white one, Alfredo! The naming of Crocs in not a foreign concept in the GI Joe continuity. According to ComicVine, “He often referred to his crocodiles as “his girls” and gave them female names such as Chelsea, Lolita, Melissa, Tara, and Tiffany.”
The blueprint for the GI Joe Classified figure is ripped straight from the vintage figure that came out in 1987. Croc Master is Cobra’s reptile trainer and he came with a pet alligator and wears a green scaled vest, boots, and a black face mask. The vintage figure can be considered a ‘mini me’ to the GI Joe Classified Series version in so many ways!
The breathing apparatuses are very similar although the vintage version’s plugs into his shoulder and the Classified Series version comes with a tank that plugs into his back. There is a very similar texture to the tank tops in both figures and the Cobra symbols are nearly identical in color.
The Classified Series figure took some liberties with the coloring and croc texture but that is expected for the scale of these figures. The belts have the same colors represent in them and the holsters and knife sheaths are in the same place.
The whip designs are different, which is a welcome change. The vintage version came with more of an tan colored Indian Jones style whip whereas the Classified Series version comes with a black version with a green handle.
On the Hunt
We love to have fun with toy photography so enjoy the photos and you might notice a special someone lurking in the background in some of the images.
If the Croc Master is the future of the GI Joe Classified Series line, we are all in! This figure captures all of the vintage figure characteristics and turns them up to 11. The mask and facial detail are amazing and you can really see the emotion of the Croc Master shining through. The fits and finishes are second to none and Fiona is absolutely amazing and I can’t wait for more figures to come with ‘pets’ if this is what we are getting. Hasbro did a truly outstanding job with the Croc Master and Fiona and we highly recommend this figure, if you can get a hold of it!
