Official Art from Axel Gimenez
Axel Gimenez also released his official box art for the Roton for both the front and back hero images and we love that he does this because we can see the illustrations as they were intended
The Roton package is spectacular! The colors and also look and feel harken back to the vintage box design with the box art featuring Skeletor flying the Roton with his Power Sword raised in the air.
The box art has a dark motif to it, which is very fitting for the evil warriors. Axel Gimenez did a fantastic job paying homage to the classic box art, which you can find on the Battle Ram Blog plus an exhaustive history of the evil assault vehicle if you are interested. The new box art shows just how devastating it would be to drive one of these vehicles through the terrain of Eternia as evidenced by the dust, rocks, and smoke this sucker kicks up! I guess it would be more devastating to find yourself on the other end of the spinning blades but we’ll save that for another day! If you look closely at the box art, you can see what looks like Kobra Khan on the bottom left creeping underneath the rocks. If you want to see more teased figures based on the MOTU Origins box and card art, we’ve rounded up the potential future releases so check it out for a fun read!
On the back of the box we see Skeletor airborne in the Roton with Mini Comic Stratos on the ready to intercept him! Off in the distance, we see Point Dread and the Talon Fighter, which has been teased on the card art several times! For a really fun read, check out our Teased MOTU Vehicles and Playset from Card Art article where you can see other instances where Point Dread and the Talon Fighter were teased.
Other teases on the box art feature Screeech on the side of the box, which is a much larger version of the original tease that was found on the Stridor box art. You can see SO much glorious detail on Screeech and given that Mattel has revealed the Teela and Zoar 2-Pack, we can expect to see Screeech in the near future! Will this be a two pack? Only time will tell! Also, a vehicle that is rumored to be packed with the Origins Mekaneck in a 2-Pack is the Road Ripper and you can see He-Man on his way to race up the side of a cliff, presumable to intercept Skeletor.
Here are close up shots of the box art and although we have already seen Mini Comic Stratos produced as a figure for Wave 7, he is the logical choice to intercept Skeletor in the air as he is flying from Point Dread! Kobra Kahn has also been ALL over the card art as he and the rest of the Snake Men is rumored to be joining the Origins line in 2023. Another amazing piece of art on the box is Viper Tower from the Eternia Playset and this has been teased once before on the dual card art of Flying Fists He-Man and the Evil Leader with the Claw Swinging Action!
Roton In Hand Images
In classic Mattel fashion, they have upgraded the new Origins Roton significantly to be a more deluxe version, similar to the MOTU Classics Roton BUT actually, it shares more in common with the Roton from the Monogram Snap Tite model kit series! But we will cover that in more detail below. You can see that this version of the Roton includes a top cage and red monstrous face mask that snaps onto the front so that you can change how your Roton displays or even create a Roton fly assault vehicle army and have the various vehicles each look slightly different!
As you can see from the images below, the new Origins Roton fits perfectly on the Wind Raider stand. Mattel had the fore thought to add the large peg hole to the bottom of the Roton so that in fits into a flight stand. But too bad they didn’t include a separate stand for it, but I guess they can share!
The top cage is sized perfectly so that you can still sit Skelly inside comfortably with plenty of head room! But it looks like He-Man is trying to get into the act! With the red slaw blades that wrap around the Roton, it makes for a perfect place for He-Man to stand while he attacks Skeletor!
Roton- Flying Assault Vehicle
The only vehicle to revealed during Mattel’s week of reveals, the Roton is an updated version of the vintage evil assault vehicle from 1984 with a twist! The Roton is a vehicle which was piloted by the warriors in the Filmation cartoon and it was made into a vehicle in 1984. Originally, the Roton was built without a cage and the monster face on the front but looking back into history, a model kit was created by Monogram which features the inspiration for the MOTU Origins Roton. The Roton is fitted with razor-sharp blades that whirl around as the vehicle travels and was so fun to play with as a kid. This was a present I remember opening up during the holidays and I played the heck out it! It was fun to see the blades spin around or send it down the stairs to a fiery demise. The addition of the cage and the monster face add an extra layer of displayability to the classic looking vehicle.
The Roton, evil flying assault vehicle, was prominently used throughout the 1980’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Filmation cartoon. Skeletor and his minions were frequently spotted sporting around in it!
First released by Mattel in 1984, the Roton was a fan favorite and so much fun to play with! I just loved sitting Skeletor in the seat and pushing the Roton forward. Then it started making that clickity clack sound and got the sawblade spinning! It was so much fun and brings me right back to childhood! I could play with that thing all day, and I will with the new Origins one!
Mattel stated that the Roton would be a bit larger than the vintage version, which I am guessing accommodates the new cage and monster face. It measures 8.5″ tall (with the cage) by 8.66″ wide. In contrast, according to a photo from Wheeljacks’s Lab who always photographs his inventory with a ruler (brilliant idea by the way!), the vintage Roton measures approximately 7″ wide so the new MOTU Origins Roton is a full 1.5″ larger than its vintage predecessor.
It comes with additional accessories that include a top cage and red monstrous face mask for the front. It’s hard to tell if that is an interchangeable piece or sits on the front of the Roton as a mask, but none the less it is very cool! Can’t wait to get this one in hand and start those clicky clack sawblades a spinin’!
