Cobra Commander Skybound Comic Box Set Issue #1 GI Joe Super7 ReAction+ Review

I have been looking forward to this one since Super7 first teased their Comic Collector Series, and having this Cobra Commander box set in hand, it all comes together really well. This release ties directly back to G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 from June 1982, the Larry Hama issue that kicked off everything we know and love about the Marvel Comics run and introduced Cobra Commander as a legitimate threat. Super7 packaging the actual comic right into the blister behind the figure is such a smart move, and it gives this release some real weight beyond just the figure itself. Speaking of the figure, the 3.75″ ReAction+ scale with O-ring construction is exactly the format as the other ReAction+ figures and yes it’s ANOTHER Cobra Commander. This is designed to channel the look and feel of those original 1982 figures, and the 12 points of articulation keep him poseable in a way that feels faithful to the era without being stiff. He comes with a pistol and grenade launcher, both solid accessory choices for the Commander. The window box packaging with Super7’s comic-influenced artwork looks fantastic, and being limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide makes this one I am really glad to have in the collection before it disappears. Huge thanks to Big Bad Toy Store for sending this Cobra Commander Skybound Comic Box Set over for review, and if he has been on your must have list, you can still grab him now at Big Bad Toy Store.

Packaging

The packaging gets a full showcase here, with the front, side, and back panels all laid out. The back panel features a file card section for Cobra Commander with his specialty and classified details, along with a synopsis of Operation Lady Doomsday from the original June 1982 issue, all set against a dark card with red, white, and blue stripe accents that tie back to the vintage G.I. Joe aesthetic.

The Skybound Comics reprint of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 sits alongside the Cobra Commander figure still seated in its plastic tray with his pistol and grenade launcher accessories nearby. I like how this set gives you the full comic as a standalone piece, with the cover art looking great on its own.

Figure Details

A front, back, and three-quarter turnaround gives a full look at Cobra Commander’s blue uniform, with gold trim running along the shoulders, belt, thigh straps, and down the legs. The sculpt on his helmet has a clean, rounded shape with a visor that sits flush against the face, and the silver collar piece beneath it adds a nice separation between the head and torso.

Cobra Commander is shown from the back, holding both his pistols , with both weapons cast in a silver plastic that has a nice matte finish to it. The brown bandolier strap running across his torso and the matching belt with holster add some welcome color contrast against the blue uniform.

The O-ring construction on this 3.75″ ReAction+ figure clearly allows for some solid posing options across both angles. The silver-grey weapons sit well in his hands, and I like how the grenade launcher has a chunky, oversized barrel that fits the vintage aesthetic Super7 was going for.
