Check out this latest Anti-Eternia He-Man Origins review and learn the backstory and history of the most Evil Man in the Universe!
Anti-Eternia He-Man never appeared in the vintage toy line but he did get created for the MOTU Classics line so it is great to see him in Origins! For the first time, we get to see an Origins version of AE He-Man so you can add him to your shelf of Evil Warriors and he will fit right in. The entire figure is a repaint of the Masters of the Universe Origins He-Man with the vintage style head so no surprises as to what the figure looks like but do have a MOTU Classics Anti-Eternia He-Man comparison and add a little history on the origins (pun intended) of this version of the most evil man in the universe!
Card Back Art
The MOTU Origins card back pay homage to the vintage blister cards with the meteor bursts that we all know and love.
The art for the hero image on the back pays homage to a classic He-Man pose but it is the bizarro version of HE-Man and you can see Hellskull (the Anti-Eternia version of Castle Grayskull) in the background. It would be amazing if they actually created a version of Hellskull (like they did Castle Grayskull)! It could be an exclusive but if they built out the entire Anti-Eternia line, it could be a place where the hell raisers dwell!
The vintage head sculpt was used on the Anti-Eternia version of He-Man, which is based on the vintage design. This is my preferred look for the character and I hope they are using this version of the head moving forward for all future He-Man iterations down the line. The eyes have a very sinister and dark look them. They are painted white with a red outline and the lack of irises gives the feeling that he is dead, giving him a wicked look.
Chest & Back
The chest armor is the standard version that the original MOTU Origins He-Man came with but this particular version is cast in a black plastic with bright red accents.
Arms / Waist / Legs
It’s not surprising that the all of the parts are using the standard He-Man buck with more red painted accents but you can see the wrist bracers are very vibrant and are set off by the black plastic.
The Waist also uses the same red paint app for the belt and his furry trunks are the same color as his hair and boots.
The boots are cast in a maroon plastic, matching his hair and fury loin cloth.
Weapons and Mini Comic
Anti Eternia He-Man comes packed with black versions of He-Man’s Power Sword, axe, and shield. he also comes with a mini comic, where you can see Anti-Eternia He-Man battling Sun Man, which is so cool that these lines are crossing over in the mini comics.
All of the weapons are a reuse of the standard He-Man accessories but cast in a black plastic. The shield is painted in the same bright red to match the red paint on AE He-Man, tying the shield in very nicely with the figure.
Origins of Anti Eternia He-Man
So where did this figure come from? Anti-Eternia He-Man comes from the German Audio Plays and if you grew up in Germany, you would have been exposed to the cassette tape that featured this storyline. Spawning from the lore in Germany, this character was made into a figure for the Masters of the Universe Classics line. According to Bleeding Cool:
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe was far too popular in the nineteen-eighties. All over the place. It even had an audio spin-off He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe dramas that were released on records and cassettes in Germany, making up 37 episodes of more than 40 minutes in length, with an additional 10 Princess of Power tapes, and six specials. These cassettes amongst other things, introduced the world of Anti-Eternia, with an evil alternate universe version of He-Man.Source: Bleeding Cool
Here is the translated transcript from a small segment of the German audio cassette and you can see that they coined the phase Hell-Grayskull, which has been shortened to Hellskull.
Anti-He-Man: He-Man! He-Man! Take up the challenge and fight me!
Skeletor: By all terrors of hell. That’s Anti-He-Man! He challenges you. He want to fight with you.
He-Man: And I will not hide from him! Quick, you have to go! Destroy the machines! I will distract the creatures of hell.
Man-At-Arms: No, He-Man. They will kill you!
He-Man: We have no choice. There’s Anti-He-Man! Move! Leave me and act! Help me by hurrying up!
Skeletor: Yes, He-Man is right. Come, Man-at-Arms, we have to move quickly!
Narrator: Skeletor, Beast Man, Trap Jaw und Man-At-Arms hastened through the dark fog to destroy the world converter. Orko on the other hand stayed with He-Man as he faced his grim adversary from Anti-Eternia.
(the sound of the power sword being unsheathed)
He-Man: By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!
(once more the sound of the power sword being unsheathed)
Anti-He-Man: By the power of Hell-Grayskull, I have the power!Source: Bleeding Cool
MOTU Classics Comparison
Given the MOTU Classics version of AE He-Man is an entirely different buck, the similarities and differences will be seen in the paint apps! The Origins version has a much brighter paint app than the classics version, making the highlights stand out more. The whites of the eyes are also much brighter in the Origins version, giving the figure more life than the Classics version. One aspect I do like about the Origins versions is that boots are painted in the same color as his hair, which I felt could have been done in Classics but they chose to just make a straight black boot.
Given this is a straight up repaint of He-Man, this figure is still amazing and it’s very cool to see an evil version of He-Man make it into the Origins line. This could open the door wide open to create Anti-Eternia repaints of the all of the Heroic Warriors, creating a Shattered Glass alternate universe scenario.
