Captain Apollo

Captain Apollo is a prominent character from the original 1978 “Battlestar Galactica” series and its 1980 continuation. In the 1987 “Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming,” he reappears, but the primary focus on Apollo is in the original series. Apollo is characterized by his strong moral compass and sense of duty, often taking risks to rescue his comrades and lead them in battle. He also has a complex relationship with his fellow pilots, particularly Starbuck, and his romantic interests are explored throughout the series.

In the original series, Apollo, portrayed by Richard Hatch, is the son of Commander Adama, the leader of the surviving fleet of humans fleeing from the robotic Cylons. As a skilled pilot and officer in the Colonial Fleet, Apollo is a central figure in the battle against the Cylons, showing bravery, leadership, and a commitment to protecting the remnants of humanity.

The character of Apollo embodies the themes of heroism, sacrifice, and loyalty in the face of overwhelming odds, making him a beloved figure among fans of the franchise. His character development consists of navigating both personal and political challenges as he helps guide the flotilla in search of a new home, the mythical planet of Earth. In the 1980 iteration, Apollo continues to be a vital part of the storyline but is not the sole focus, as it introduces new characters and plotlines. The franchise has had several adaptations and reboots, but Apollo remains a classic figure embodying the spirit of resistance against tyranny.

Lieutenant Starbuck

In the 1987 series “Battlestar Galactica,” the character of Starbuck, originally portrayed by Dirk Benedict in the 1978 series, was reimagined. The character maintained many core traits from the original: he is a skilled Viper pilot, known for his charm, wit, and dashing personality.

In the 1987 series, Starbuck’s character is seen as a roguish but competent pilot. He often serves as comic relief, providing a light-hearted contrast to the serious situations faced by the crew of the Battlestar Galactica. He is also characterized by his interactions with other characters, particularly his rivalry with Apollo and his flirtatious behavior with women, showing a playful side even in dire circumstances.

It’s worth noting that the 1987 series is often considered less successful than its predecessor, and it did not achieve the same level of cultural impact or acclaim. It faced challenges related to storytelling, production quality, and overall reception, which may have affected character development, including Starbuck’s.

The Centurions are characterized by their distinctive, evocative design, which features a shiny, metallic exoskeleton, a helmet with red glowing eyes, and a modulated voice. They are portrayed as relentless and formidable opponents, equipped with various weaponry, making them a significant threat to the crew of the Galactica and other human colonies.

In the 1980s series, the Cylons have a more theatrical appearance compared to their original 1978 version, where they had a more angular and basic design. The 1980s Centurions maintain a strong presence throughout the series, often depicted as a persistent menace, reflecting the overarching themes of conflict between good and evil, as well as the fight for survival.

Though “Battlestar Galactica” was short-lived, lasting just one season with a total of 24 episodes (followed by a television movie titled “Galactica 1980”), it garnered a dedicated fan base. Its impact on the science fiction genre led to the creation of a critically acclaimed reimagining of the series in 2004, which retained some characters and thematic elements while updating the narrative for a modern audience. The original series remains a nostalgic touchstone for fans of classic sci-fi, and it is often remembered for its iconic themes, engaging characters, and imaginative storytelling set against the backdrop of interstellar conflict.
