History of Bengali
According to ThunderCats Wiki:
Bengali is a tiger-like Thunderian with blue and white stripes. He is made an honorary ThunderCat along with Pumyra and Lynx-O, and is stationed with them at the Tower of Omens to monitor for the Lunataks flying fortress Sky Tomb. Bengali is a blacksmith who wields the Hammer of Thundera, which functions both as a tool and a weapon. The hammer is capable of emitting energy beams similar to other ThunderCats’ weapons. As he explains to Lion-O, only a Thunderian blacksmith could reforge the Sword of Omens. This makes him an indispensable addition to the ThunderCats’ force. The handle of the Hammer conceals a small supply of smoke pellets, which he can trigger by striking with the Hammer.Bengali’s skill with metalworking extends to shattering manacles with a single blow while somehow leaving the wearer unharmed.
Bengali’s story begins on Thundera during the great cataclysm. He is one of the three Thunderian countrymen the ThunderCats are unable to save. Pumyra and Lynx-O are the other two. In a stroke of luck, a Berbil spaceship shows up in the knick of time and rescues the trio. However, when the planet explodes, the fuel tank sustains damage. The ship has just enough fuel to make it to Third Earth, but not enough to land by any known settlement. Thus, the trio end up on a desert island where they construct a stockade with the two Berbils. Jaga appears to Lion-O and reveals to him that these other Thunderians exist. Cheetara uses her psychic abilities to verify this, but is unable to pinpoint their exact location. However, before long Ma-Mutt, the Berserkers, and the ThunderCats all discover the island. The forces of evil conspire to capture the trio and hold them hostage on Fire Rock Mountain as bait for the ThunderCats, who succeed in rescuing their countrymen and bring them back to Cats Lair. The decision is made to enlist the Thunderians as honorary ThunderCats, and they are each given a new uniform and insignia. Bengali is stationed at the Tower of Omens with the other new ThunderCats and Snarfer to monitor for the flying fortress known as Sky Tomb. He supports the ThunderCats with his blacksmithing ability, most notably using his Hammer of Thundera to reforge the Sword of Omens after Tug Mug snaps the blade in two (Mumm-Ra Lives!, Part 1).Bengali | ThunderCats wiki | Fandom
Bengali first appeared on the 1980’s Rankin Bass Cartoon Series on an episode entitled ” ThunderCats Ho”, which aired on September 10, 1986. In this episode, Lion-O learns that the three Thunderians he thought had perished with their home planet of Thundera are in fact still alive. So the ThunderCats try to rescue the three new Thunderians to bring them home to the Cats Lair, but Mumm-Ra isn’t going to let them succeed so easily. Box and Pack Out
Part of what makes Super7 Ultimates, the “Ultimate” version of an action figure is their packaging! These ThunderCats figures come in fantastic packaging which includes a beautiful slipcover that hides a spectacular figure within! Let’s take a look at each of the different parts of the packaging.
Just like the other Super7 Ultimates figures, the package design includes a slipcover with a very simple design, but that is brilliantly executed. The slipcover is jet black with a very reflective red ThunderCats symbol! Then there is a small cut out near the name of the figure that sets the title off. On the back there is a large beautiful Thundercats logo.
The most exciting part of opening a Super7 Ultimates figures is that moment when you slide the slip cover off to reveal the window display with the figure and amazing pack out of weapons and accessories inside the box! The slipcover hides another ThunderCats logo above the name of the figure and then you can clearly see everything that Bengali comes with! Also behind Bengai is that classic white burst that was used on vintage LJN ThunderCats cardbacks back in the 80’s. The back of the box features an amazing ThunderCats illustration of Bengali and a bio that reads:
The young Thunderian Bengali came to Third Earth with Pumyra and Lynx-O, but he joined the other ThunderCats after their unexpected reunion. He is an agile warrior, accomplished pilot, and a skilled blacksmith. Armed with the Hammer of Thundera he once assumed the task of reforging the Sword of Omens itself after Lunatek Tug Mug broke its blade. Despite his intelligence, Bengaliis often hot-tempered and impulsive in battle, but he nevertheless embodies the Code of Thundera.
Bengali’s weapons and accessories are neatly organized in layered plastic clamshell packs that keep them free from movement. With the size of pedestal, Super7 had to do a secondary plastic shell that sits behind the figure to house the large accessory and the extra sets of hands.
- Bengali figure
- 2 Head sculpts
- 4 Pairs of hands
- Hammer of Thundera
- Sword of Omens (Forged)
- Ore piece
Bengali’s head sculpt is very reminiscent of the Rankin Bass 1980’s cartoon version of Bengali. This face sculpt harkens back to both the cartoon and vintage LJN toy. From the light blue and white facial color, and white tiger stripped head, Bengal’s face sculpt is beautifully executed. The black tiger strips on his head wrap all the way around and look absolutely gorgeous again his snow-white hair. Then with the lower portion of his head in a brilliant white color, finishing off the classic Bengali look. The alternate heads that Bengali comes packaged with is very similar, except for the growling facial expression and the glowing eyes as to show he is being summoned by the Sword of Omens. Like many of the Super7 ThunderCats Ultimate figures, Bengali comes with a determined looking facial expression and a fiercer “battle” facial expression. Both heads feature the vintage inspired beautiful light blue skin with white face, and black and white tiger stripped hair.
Chest & Back
best of the cartoon and vintage action figure look. Bengali sports a nice light blue chest strap with a pocket on the front. the aforementioned red Thundercat logo near his right shoulder and cross straps on the back. There is also an ab crunch and waist swivel cuts for added articulation that are nicely integrated into the figure’s design. It’s a simple torso design, but a perfect tribute to the cartoon and vintage LJN action figure.
Arms / Waist / Legs
Bengal’s is outfitted in his classic bright blue , light blue and white outfit. His upper arms are a lighter blue color, with a bright blue cuff and exposed black and white tiger stripped lower arms and white hands, similar to that of the Vintage LJN version. The vintage version however had blue tiger strips rather than black tiger strips. But I think that the black strips look great against his snowy white skin color. His right arm and left arm designs are symmetrical, meaning they are both the samet.
Bengali’s waist design is very simple. He is wearing bright blue shorts and has a peg on the left side where his Hammer of Thundera white with black tiger stripped holster attaches to.
Bengali’s legs are a bright blue color teal color to match the shoulder cuffs on his outfit. Both the right and left legs are symmetrical in design. Benglai’s open toes shoes or foot coverings, however you want to describe them, have light blue trim on top, then below are bright blue in color with a blue accent on his shins. His white feet and heals are then exposed with the front half of his foot covered by his open toed shoes.
Weapons & Accessories
Bengali comes a lot of amazing accessories that harken back to the story line in the cartoon series! Let’s take a look at everything that this Super7 Ultimates Bengali comes packaged with.
- 3 Pairs of alternate hands
- Hammer of Thundera
- Sword of Omens (Forged)
- Ore piece
Bengali includes 3 sets of additional alternate hands. He comes packaged wearing a set of horizontally hinged open grasping hands. But the additional accessories include one set of vertically hinged gripping hands, which is a new feature of these latest Super7 Ultimates figures. With the vertical hinge for example, Bengali can hold his Hammer of Thundera over his head in great poses! He also has a set of horizontally hinged grippng hands and a set of closed fists.
Hammer of Thundera
Bengali includes his signature Hammer of Thundera. This hammer is straight out of the cartoon with a Bengali like blue tiger head around the tip of the hammer and a grey and blue grip with white tassels and red balls on the end. The Hammer of Thunder was famously used to reforge the Sword of Omens itself after Lunatek Tug Mug broke its blade.
You can stow the Hammer of Thundera into the hip holster that comes with Bengali clipped to his left hip. As you can see it is a white holster with black tiger stripped motif and looks amazing as a tool belt so to speak for this feline blacksmith!
As you will see from the images below, this accesory is super fun to pose Benagali with in all sorts of Blacksmithing poses!
Sword of Omens (forged)
Bengali includes a red hot looking Sword of Omens, which he uses the Hammer of Thunder to reforge the Sword of Omens after Lunatek Tug Mug broke its blade. It is colored in an awesome orange and yellow gradiant on the blade and then eye of Thundera is open on the hilt!
Anvil & Ore Piece
The anvil is the blacksmiths best friend when it comes to blacksmithing tools, and this one is no exception. This anvil looks amazing with it’s huge ThunderCats logo on the side and energy burst coming out of it. It sits on a blue base and has a piece of iron ore stuck to it. Bengali’s accessories also included an extra loose piece of ore as well. This accesory makes this set as it was super fun shooting pictures of Benagil forging the Sword of Omen’s and striking it on the anvil!
The pedestal is a very neat accessory because you can use it as a surface for Bengali to work on like a work bench. He can pound out the Sword of Omen’s directly onto the pedestal itself or you can place the anvil on top of it and it lends some height for Bengali to work at. It makes for a wonderful diorama piece. And with the included insert from the package, you can take some wonderful photos like the ones below.
As you can ser Super7 did an amazing job at recreating the essence of the vintage LJN Bengali action figure, but improved upon it by blending the look of the Rankin & Bass 1980’s cartoon as well! The use of the black tiger strips on the new Bengali’s hair and skin is a vast improvement to the vintage figure’s blue color as it’s a nice contrast with some much blue on the figure already. Also the use of a light blue chest straps on the new figure lends some more color variation to the torso and complements him nicely.
But the biggest difference betweem the vintage LJN Bengali and the new Super7 version is the Hammer of Thundera! The vintage version was all one color light blue plastic and ridicoulusly big! The new one is appropriatly sized, very detailed and matches the look of the cartoon with some amazing paint detail! I give this one up to the new Super7 version! Don’t get me wrong, I would love to get my hands on a vintage LJN Bengali someday!
