ThunderCats are on the move, ThunderCats are loose!! We are happy to bring you this Tygra Super7 ThunderCats Ultimates Review! ThunderCats come ROARING at you with this new Super7 new Tygra Ultimates figure! It’s been a very long wait, but Tygra from Super7’s ThunderCats Ultimates Wave 2 line is FINALLY here! I placed my order for Tygra when he originally came up for pre-order back in Aug. of 2020! So, I’ve waited nearly 2 years for him, but he has been well worth the wait! I absolutely love the way Tygra turned out! I know for some, this is a divisive subject, as Tygra’s color scheme changed from his prototype render images from a more cartoon accurate color scheme, to a vintage LJN toy accurate color scheme. But in my opinion, he changed for the better because I always loved the vintage LJN Tygra! As a matter of fact, I still own my today and you will see photos of it near the end of this article.
Tygra has always been an interesting character when it comes to the ThunderCats. He always seemed very smart and in command. Sometimes even giving Lion-O advice, he always seemed very wise. Even though Lion-O is in command, he was still considered the ThunderCats’ Council leader.
According to ThunderCats Wiki:
“A staunch, level-headed warrior based on the tiger, Tygra is the one Lion-O often turns to as second-in-command and for counsel. He is responsible for the design of all of the ThunderCat structures on Third Earth — the Cat’s Lair and the Tower of Omens — as well as the devices the ThunderCats used when exploring New Thundera. He is also gifted with “mind-power” — the ability to create lifelike illusions in other people’s minds; he used this for Lion-O’s Anointment Trial, but it puts a great strain on him. He uses a whip-like bolas in combat, with which he can render himself invisible to the naked eye.Tygra | ThunderCats wiki | Fandom
When Super7 first took over the license from Mattel, they were in a rush to get out Wave 1, so Wave 1 was simply a remake from the same molds as the ThunderCats Club Third Earth Classics series, therefore the huge pins on the joints of wave 1! The biggest difference being the paint deco and the plethora of weapons and accessories that Super7 is known for. Unlike the Wave 1, this Wave 2 Tygra figure features the new pin-less joints and better articulated body construction! You can see how nicely the joints come together at his shoulders, elbows, abs and knees! It is a much cleaner and more natural look than say the Lion-O figure. Tygra is sporting his vintage inspired Teal colored outfit, complete with a beautiful red ThunderCats logo on the chest and his left shoulder accent. And as mentioned above, Tygra’s skin tone is the more vibrant orange color, rather than the more muted color that was shown on the prototype model. I actually really like the vintage toy variant color scheme! Tygra turned out absolutely gorgeous, although a little bit of paint blemishes here and there, but overall, very clean. Let’s dive in and take a closer look at this Ultimates Tygra figure!
Box and Pack Out
Part of what makes Super7 Ultimates, the “Ultimate” version of an action figure is their packaging! These ThunderCats figures come in fantastic packaging which includes a beautiful slipcover that hides a spectacular figure within! Let’s take a look at each of the different parts of the packaging.
Just like the other Super7 Ultimates figures, the package design includes a slipcover with a very simple design, but that is brilliantly executed. The slipcover is jet black with a very reflective red ThunderCats symbol! Then there is a small cut out near the name of the figure that sets the title off. On the back there is a large beautiful Thundercats logo.
The most exciting part of opening a Super7 Ultimates figures is that moment when you slide the slip cover off to reveal the window display with the figure and amazing pack out of weapons and accessories inside the box! The slipcover hides another ThunderCats logo above the name of the figure and then you can clearly see everything that Tygra comes with! Also behind Tygra is that classic white burst that was used on vintage LJN ThunderCats cardbacks back in the 80’s. The back of the box features an amazing ThunderCats illustration of Tygra and a bio that reads:
“Tygra, Lion-O’s counsel and trusted lieutenant, is the oldest the ThunderCat, cool-headed and gifted with a scientific mind. He is master of the bolas, a whip-like weapon that can also make him invisible, and he has the power to put convincing illusions into the mind of others.
Tygra’s weapons and accessories are neatly organized in layered plastic clamshell packs that keep them free from movement. With the size of solid bolo whip, Super7 had to do a secondary plastic shell that sits behind the figure to house the super long bolo whip, rope bolo whip and the extra sets of hands.
Tygra’s head sculpt is very reminiscent of the Rankin Bass 1980’s cartoon version of Tygra. This face sculpt harkens back to both the cartoon and vintage LJN toy. From the bright orange skin, light orange facial color, and tiger stripped head, Tygra’s face sculpt is beautifully executed. The tiger strips on his head wrap all the way around and look absolutely gorgeous. Then with the lower portion of his head in a brilliant white color, finishing off the classic Tygra look. The two alternate heads that Tygra comes packaged with are very similar, except for the facial expression of course. Like many of the Super7 ThunderCats Ultimate figures, Tygra comes with a solemn looking facial expression and a fiercer “battle” facial expression. Both heads feature the vintage inspired beautiful bright orange toned skin with lighter orange face, and tiger stripped hair.
Tygra’s torso is screaming classic’s ThunderCats all the way! With his multicolored teals unitard shirt, to the large red ThunderCats logo on his chest, this version of Tygra blends the best of the cartoon and vintage action figure look. Tygra’s low neckline on his outfit exposes the beautiful orange stripped body below. There is also an ab crunch and waist swivel cuts for added articulation that are nicely integrated into the figure’s design. Tygra’s abs have a bit of a bronze color overspray on them to highlight his ab muscles. I am not really a fan of this, but on my version of Tygra, it was done subtlety, so it looks pretty good. I have seen early shipments of Tygra with this overspray a bit too overdone and tends to make it look like his abs are dirty. Mine actually looks pretty good, so I hope this was a running correction in the factory!
Tygra is outfitted in his classic Teal and blue outfit. His arms and legs are the lighter teal color, similar to that of the Vintage LJN version. His right arm and left arm designs are asymmetrical, meaning they are both different. There was however one glaring error on Tygra, it seems that his right elbow pad which should be painted on was missed at the factory, even though Super7 says it was on the paint master. But I think that is an easy enough fix for those slightly talented customizers who must have it completely accurate. On his left shoulder, he has the same type of left shoulder accent piece as the vintage LJN figure, except it is teal with gold trim, rather than blue on the vintage. His lower arms are also the same bright orange skin tone with beautifully painted black tiger stripes! And he has lighter orange colored hands.
Tygra’s legs are a light color teal color to match the sleeves on his outfit. Both the right and left legs are symmetrical in design. Tygra’s open toes shoes or foot coverings, however you want to describe them, have dark blue trim on top, then below are teal in color with a gold accent on his shins. His feet and heals are then exposed with the front half of his foot covered by his open toed shoes.
Weapons & Accessories
Tygra comes with fewer accessories than some of the other ThunderCats, like say Panthro that has a crazy pack out of stuff. But he does include 3 versions of his famous Bolo Whip! Let’s take a look at everything that this Super7 Ultimates Tygra comes packaged with.
- Tygra figure
- Solid Bolo Whip
- String Bolo Whip
- Retracted Bolo Whip
- Alternate head
- Interchangeable hands
As mentioned above, Tygra is the master of the bolas, a whip-like weapon that can also make him invisible, and he has the power to put convincing illusions into the mind of others. This Super7 Ultimates Tygra came packed with 3 versions of his bolo whip! One solid soft plastic long extended one, one string version, and a retraced closed version. Let’s take a closer look at each below.
Solid Bola Whip
The solid soft plastic long extended bolo whip is the most fun of all the included whips with this figure! You can take all sorts of fun photos of Tygra striking with this whip. It is made of a softer pliable plastic, but it does hold its shape. It includes the 3 bolas on the end and a gold colored handle.
String Bolo Whip
This version of Tygra’s bolo whip is a tribute to the vintage bolo whip that came included with the LJN Vintage Tygra action figure of the 1980’s. Made with a plastic gold colored handle, the whip is a soft blue thick string with the plastic 3 bolas tied to the end of it. You can wrap the string around Tygra’s one hand while he hold’s the whip’s gold handle, and then he can hold the plastic bolas in the other hand.
Retracted Bolo Whip
This version of his Bolo whip is in its closed position, which Tygra was seen in the cartoon walking around with it in his hands a lot. So, you can pose Tygra like he is ready to strike with his whip at any moment. It is a simple gold handle with the 3 red bolas on the end.
As mentioned above, the two alternate heads that Tygra comes packaged with are very similar, except for the facial expression. Tygra comes with both a solemn looking facial expression and a fierce battle expression. Both heads feature the vintage inspired beautiful bright orange colored skin with lighter face, and tiger stripped hair. The tiger strips on his head are executed beautifully and wrap all the way around. The lower portion of his head is a bright white color.
Tygra includes 2 sets of additional alternate hands. Tygra comes packaged wearing a set of horizontally hinged gripping hands. But the additional accessories include one set of vertically hinged gripping hands, which is a new feature of these latest Super7 Ultimates figures. With the vertical hinge for example, Tygra can hold his super long solid Bola whip high over his head in great poses! The other set of alternate hands are open hands.
Vintage Figure Comparison
When it comes to this version of Tygra, his color scheme changed from his prototype render images from a more cartoon accurate color scheme, to a vintage LJN toy accurate color scheme. As you can see below Tygra is sporting the more teal colored outfit, and brighter orange color skin tone, paying tribute to his vintage LJN counterpart! As a matter of fact, when the LJN inspired Wave 6 was announced, I could not be more excited!!! Be sure to check out our article on the Super7 LJN Inspired Thundercats Ultimates Wave 6! He has the same type of left shoulder accent piece except it is teal colored and gold trimed, rather than blue on the vintage. When it comes to Tygra’s open toed shoes, you can see the Super7 Tygra has the dark blue trim on top, and then is teal in color with a gold accent on his shins. While, the vintage LJN Tygra has all blue colors open toed shoes. The Super7 Tygra’s outfit differs a little bit from the vintage one as the lower part of his abs is a different blue tone that the rest of his outfit, looking closer to the vintage cartoon series. So, this Tyrga takes a bit from the cartoon and a bit from the vintage figure and marries them into a beautifully executed action figure!
I really love how this Super7 Ultimates Tygra figure came out! The mix of vintage inspired colors, with a nod to the cartoon really hit it home for me! His mix of different types of bolo whips makes it fun to pose him in different looks. If any of you follow our Toy Habits Instagram page and The Toy Sorceress Instagram page, you will see the Toy Sorceress loves Toy Photography, so this new Tygra was a blast to pose and take photos of! His new body style with pin-less joints and flawless articulation really look amazing! There was a little bit of paint blemishes, but overall Tygra came out beautifully. Tygra took a very long time to ship out to customers due to issues at the factory that Super7 was using at the time. Suffice to say, this was the last project for that factory with Super7. So hopefully this is the last time a figure takes nearly 2 years to be released. Besides that, I think Tygra turned out amazing! For that I gave him a 6.5 out of 7 stars! He was well worth the almost 2 years I waited for him! So far, I own about 10 Ultimates ThunderCats figures, and I have got to say that Tygra is my absolute favorite! But my collection is ever growing, and I am totally looking forward to the new Super7 LJN Inspired Thundercats Ultimates Wave 6! Can’t wait!!! Super7 give us more THUNDERCATS! Meow!
