We have a MASSIVE Thanksgiving Day special in hand review treat for you all with the new GI Joe Classified Series Serpentor & Air Chariot!

The GI Joe Classified Series Serpentor & Air Chariot has got to be the best release in the GI Joe Classified series to date! Since the line was released 3 years ago, I (The Toy Sorceress) was personally super excited for where the line was going and since my favorite vintage ARAH figure is Serpentor & air chariot, I was always hoping that Hasbro would release this set! When they announced Dr. Mindbender and revealed his package artwork, we saw him working on his creation and we knew right there and then that Serpentor with his air chariot wouldn’t be too far behind. Well, now we have him in hand! We bring you this special co-authorized review written by both Michael and the Toy Sorceress, so sit back and enjoy! We also have an extra special Toy Photography short stories at the end, so be sure to check those out!

As we know from the GI Joe mini-series Arise, Serpentor Arise, Serpentor was created by Cobra scientist Dr. Mindbender as part of a conspiracy within Cobra to create the perfect soldier but, in actuality, Mindbender and Destro were plotting to create a leader to supplant Cobra Commander. Raiding several tombs that contain history’s greatest warriors and their DNA, this would serve as the genetic blueprint for this super soldier. Possessing the acute military genius, courage, daring, charisma, political know how and fighting prowess of these historic leaders, what could go wrong??? If you have not checked out our Deluxe GI Joe Classified Series Serpentor speculation video, please do so as we have fun thinking about the possibilities now, they have become a reality!

  • Serpentor & Air Chariot set includes:
    • Full Air chariot with fan blades that spin, large blasters that come off and be held, ammo comes off as well. Articulated mouth and cobra fangs that articulate down. Molded after real King Cobra

Packaging

Serpentor’s box and art is beautiful and is in the same style as Dr. Mindbender’s deluxe style box! It features artwork of the Air Chariot plus the weapons and accessory pack out that Serpentor comes with in an amazing. It has a diagonal half with artwork of Serpentor on the front that slides off to reveal the Cobra DNA pattern.

The back of the box features places where Destro was collecting samples of DNA from the great villainous leaders in history! The box art features him and his throne sitting on the lap of the Lincoln memorial with a legion of Cobra Vipers saluting their new Supreme leader, which is so apropos! It also features an amazing scene of Cobra Firebats feeling the Cobra stronghold in victory! A funny scene has him punching the lights out of Cobra Commander, which is hilarious and very well illustrated! Cobra Commander is getting his as Serpentor ain’t havin’ it! You also see Serpentor cauterizing a wound he sustained during battle. And finally, we have Destro and Baroness with a squad of Cobra Troopers on the attack as well. The rear artwork is spectacular and just help make the packaging on this set superior to all previous releases!

Serpentor Figure

Let’s take a look at the Supreme leader himself, in all of his gold and green snake like glory! The details on Serpentor are truly outstanding! The snake texture really comes through, and the facial features look amazing! This might be one of their best face sculpts yet! The snakes coming off the shoulders are also a very nice touch! The soft goods cape adds other textures as well, but they all play very nice together. The details on the snakes on his shoulders and his belt are absolutely gorgous and super detailed. This has got to be the very best GI Joe Classified Series figure to date and we just can’t stop gushing about it!

Head Sculpt

He comes with two ways to display him where you can give him a more updated look or an appearance that harkens back to the vintage figure. These looks are achieved with either a one-piece helmet and snake armor that is integrated into one or a two-piece combination to give you a vintage look from 1987.

The colors of the helmet tops are a deeper gold than the helmet parts that cover his skull, which match the rest of his frontal body armor. Serpentor’s head sculpt is shrouded in a snake helmet, which allows you to change the look of the figure by swapping out the top of the helmet. There is one integrated helmet and snake armor extension that attaches to his mid back, underneath his soft goods cape. This look gives him a more updated look, but one drawback of this design is that it limits the articulation of the neck.

There is also a two piece helmet that comes packed as extra accessories, which will allow you to create the classic, vintage figure, look of Serpentor where the snake armor is detached from his head. The helmet top goes over the top of his head and fits perfectly to achieve the look of Serpentor we grew up with. The seams in this helmet top integrate nicely where you can’t tell, from the back, that this is a separate piece as it looks like part of the helmet design with a flat deep gold paint app in the back. where to the two parts connect.

Serpentor’s face sculpt is one of the best in the line thus far and really captures the way he appeared in the GI Joe cartoon from the late 80’s. His face has a worn torn look where there are visible bags under his eyes. He has a very determined look on his face and the lines that define the area around the nose look natural and match the stern look on his face. The snake fangs from his helmet extend to the corner of his eyes while the bottom fangs rest on his well-defined chin.

Chest and Back

There are a few different textures and sculpted pieces that make up Serpentor’s chest armor, each with a different finish and design to them. Around the neck and shoulders of the figure, you can see a deep gold painted snake scale texture, which you can imagine is the under suit that Serpentor wears below his armor. This same texture and paint app is found below his breast plate, the sides of his abdomen, and around the back of the figure in two small areas. His chest and abdomen armor look like layered plates, and they are shrouded with two sculpted snakes that wrap around his underarms and rest on his shoulder. The two tails of the snakes meet in the middle and provide framing for his chest armor. The back design of his armor has very nice, curved defining lines to it, which make the armor look more formfitting. The snake armor that attaches to his back is very seamless and the design is well done where you can’t tell that these are separate pieces that are connected to the figure.

Arms

Serpentor’s arms are asymmetrical but appear identical with only one small difference. On his right forearm, there is a slot for his two sets of claw attachments, which comes in two different blade lengths. Other than that, his arms have the gold snake scale texture with dark green forearm bracers that have a scale appearance of a body of snake while his gloves that more of a crackled snake texture to them. He also has a piece of dark green armor covering his elbow, which is a very important part of the body to keep protected lol.

Waist and Legs

There is a third snake that wraps around his waist, creating a belt and you can see his chest and abdomen armor extending down the front of the waist with gold snake scale texture on the right and left sides. The back of the waist has the same gold snake scale texture plus his back armor extending down to his sacrum. His legs are symmetrical and integrate every texture and color found on the figure, tying it all together.

He has a large piece of thigh armor that has a layered look to that extends all the way down to the knee armor, that has the same design as his elbow armor (remember that important piece!). He has a snake tail that wraps around each of his calves, with represents the other snakes found on his armor. The gold snake scale texture is found to make up the majority of the sculpt of his legs while pieces that mirror his chest armor are found on the sides of his thighs and the back of his boots. Speaking of boots, he also has a piece of green armor on top and down the sides of his traditional GI Joe Classified Series loafer.

Soft Goods Cape

Serpentor’s soft goos cape is very apropos for his figure design as it has a large snake skin texture design. The quality of the cape design is top notch and it’s constructed very durably. To remove the cape, you can just position Serpentor’s arms straight back and the cape will slide off of his shoulder so you can remove it safely.

Serpentor’s Weapons and Accessories

Serpentor comes with the following accessories:

  • a large Cobra snake pet
  • a green snake dagger
  • two claw attachments
  • a long gold Cobra staff
  • sword with cobra head hilt
GI Joe Classified Series Serpentor accessories

Cobra Pet Snake

One of the cooler accessories that Serpentor came with is a realistic looking Cobra snake that is dark brown on top and a light cream coloring for the bottom of the snake. The head and hood look flared like the Cobra is ready to strike with his two white fangs showing against his red mouth.

Snake Dagger

In addition to the coiled Cobra snake, there is also a smaller, more slender green snake that is fully extended straight with a pointy tail. You can imagine Serpentor using this snake as a stabbing weapon or a dagger he could throw into an unsuspecting foe!

Claw Attachments

Adoring the right forearm of Serpentor are two sizes of claw attachments that fit into the notch that is carved out on his arm. These pieces fit snuggly into the bracer and have a long blade and short blade design so you can give Serpentor a different look depending on your mood. The short blades are perfect if you want to put them on while Serpentor is piloting the Air Chariot as they are the perfect size and won’t impede the operation of the steering column. Once Serpentor has dismounted from his ride, you can then swap out the longer blades for battle!

Sword

Serpentor also comes with a small sword with a silver blade and a gold hilt. The cross guard has a Cobra snake face with the hood of the snake making up two ends of the guard. The sword has a central ridge, and you can see the Fuller design that is present from the mid blade all the way down to the cross guard.

Cobra Staff

His staff is made of two parts where the Cobra head attaches to the top of the staff. If you are not aware, you can remove the Cobra head to reveal a pointed end underneath, which can be used to hurl at an opponent. The Cobra head is very intricately designed and is cast in a solid gold paint color, as is the text of the staff. Adding a splash of color in the form of a red gem at the bottom of the staff, Serpentor looks amazing holding this grand weapon as he rides his Air Chariot or commands his troops into battle

Air Chariot

Serpentor’s ride comes in several pieces that you need to assemble but the directions are very easy to follow and you can put the Air Chariot together fairly quickly. The pieces that you will need to put on are the Cobra head and hood that makes up the front of the Air Chariot, the fins, the steering yoke, and the two twin machine guns.

Cobra Head and Hood

The front of Serpentor’s Air Chariot is one massive, integrated Cobra head with a large, flared hood made up of several textures and designs. The neck of the Cobra has a similar armor-plated style to Serpentor’s chest armor and creates the middle effect of the snake that moves all the way down to the vents at the floor of the chariot. The hood of the Cobra snake has a snakeskin texture with two round armor-plated designs integrated into it.

The head of the snake is the best part and there are some hidden gems within the snake mouth so be sure to open it up check it out! The snake jaw is hinged and when you bring it down, it will reveal a couple of surprises. First, there is a gun that you can pivot and position inside his mouth, and that is not all! You can also position a set of fangs are on a hinge to complete the look of the Cobra snake. With the fangs down and mouth gun positioned, this Air Chariot looks like it is a force to be reckoned with.

Control Panel, Steering Module, and Twin Machine Guns

The steering column is T-shaped and is also one of the parts that you will need to put together but it snaps in firmly to the base of the control panel. The steering module has an instrument panel and two handles that have a motorcycle look, feel, and texture to them. The steering yoke is integrated into a display panel at the base of the Air Chariot, which appear to have a similar look to the design of airplane instruments. Separating the two panels is a solid black piece that looks like a vent.

This area is flanked by two twin machine guns that you will also need to assemble and attach. Once you attach the barrel and the ammo magazine, the guns fit into the two holes that are mounted on the frame of the Air Chariot. The barrels on the machine gun are long and slender and have a carry handle on them, which Serpentor’s Cobra troops can use in a ground battle. The magazine’s for the machine gun are gray and feed into the side and the butt of the machine gun.

Frame and Floor

The frame of the Air Chariot is one solid piece where all of the aforementioned parts fit into. The stickers are already applied (thank goodness!) and printed on to the plastic. Behind where Serpentor stands there is a large, silver fan with a black grate that you can turn by grabbing the silver knob protruding from the black grate. There is also armor plating and rivets that make up the bulk of the floor design with a small fin that is permanently attached to the chariot in the rear.

Wings

The wing design has two massive intake jets mounted on top of them where the fins attach to the Air Chariot. The wings feature a curved down design with armor plating with a cobra snake emblem with a crown flanking both sides of the wings.

Jet Exhausts and Underside

The underside of the air chariot is just as detailed as the top parts that show. There are two large black jet exhaust pieces that you can see from the back and bottom of the Air Chariot with two large red turbo engines that are made to look like they are glowing red and hot. There is also a gold plate of armor protecting the underside of the fan when in flight. When not in flight, the chariot has landing gear that you can extend, which lifts the chariot about 1/4 of an inch off of the ground. There also cobra stickers and panels on the bottom of the chariot so if you choose to hang his Royal serpent’ness from the ceiling to make it look like he’s flying, it creates a nice visual!

Vintage ARAH Serpentor & Air Chariot

The vintage ARAH Serpentor and his Air Chariot were released in 1986, and came in a special figure vehicle boxed set. According to Serpentor – Wikipedia

Serpentor was first released as an action figure in 1986, packaged with the Air Chariot. The Air Chariot is like a flying throne, with two 7.62mm attack guns, reinforced battle shield, and hover engine.[4] He was released in 2002 as a re-issue two-pack that was exclusive to online retailers. A new mold of Serpentor was released in 2005, as part of a comic three-pack, which included a reprint of issue #49 of the Marvel Comics series. Serpentor was released again in 2007 as a single carded figure as part of the 25th anniversary series. This figure was also packaged with a re-release of the Air Chariot in a vehicle 2 pack, and with a DVD set that included the DVD of “Arise, Serpentor, Arise!”.

Serpentor in the Sunbow Cartoon

Part of our favotite memories of the GI Joe Sunbow cartoons include the mini-series that they were made up of. One of my personal favorites is “Arise Serpentor Arise!” A 5 part mini-series that explains the creation and origins of the Supreme leader himself and how Dr. Mindbender created him.

GI Joe Serpentor & Air Chariot sunbow 3

According to Serpentor – Wikipedia:

Serpentor appears as the main antagonist in the second season of the original 1980s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero animated series. Serpentor first appeared in the five-part second-season premiere “Arise, Serpentor, Arise!”, voiced by Dick Gautier. The animated version of Serpentor was designed to be a new, superior leader of Cobra created by Doctor Mindbender through a breakthrough in cloning research. He was conceived as the perfect warrior, extracted from the unearthed remains of some of the greatest generals and conquerors of all time as well as other notable historic figures – Julius CaesarNapoleon BonaparteAttila the HunPhilip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the GreatIvan the TerribleVlad the ImpalerHannibalGenghis KhanGrigori RasputinMontezumaGeronimoEric the Red and fictional Egyptian general Xanuth Amon-Toth. In the animated continuity, Sun Tzu‘s DNA was also intended to be part of Serpentor’s creation, but the attempt to obtain his DNA was thwarted by Sgt. Slaughter, whose DNA was then intended for use as a substitute.

The first attempt to create Serpentor was sabotaged by Cobra Commander, who secretly dumped a mutant virus into the Sgt. Slaughter DNA chamber, causing a monster that rampaged throughout Cobra Island until it dissolved. During Doctor Mindbender’s second attempt, Cobra Commander is betrayed by Scrap-Iron (who told Doctor Mindbender what had happened). Upon the recapture of Sgt. Slaughter, the creation is a success and Serpentor is born. As a result of Sun Tzu’s DNA being missing, Serpentor is very intolerant and overbearing. He issues most of his orders with the phrase “This I command!” He also shows some of Slaughter’s willingness to lead from the front lines, in contrast to Cobra Commander. Mere moments after his creation and being given his distinctive costume, he accepts a challenge from Slaughter, and the two battle throughout the Terror Drome, where Serpentor shows off the strength he inherited from Slaughter’s DNA during the fight. However, without the methodical Sun Tzu’s influence, Serpentor is also prone to impulsiveness, as shown in his first major act—leading Cobra in an attack upon Washington, D.C. He succeeded in capturing the city and demanded the surrender of the President (who was out of town with the Vice-President at the time), Congress and G.I. Joe. G.I. Joe manages a counterattack on Cobra, turning the operation into a complete fiasco, but just as the Joes are about to capture Serpentor, a sudden burst of fire drives them back. It comes from Cobra Commander, who convinced Mindbender to free him, because he knew how to use a weapon. Cobra Commander convinces Serpentor to let him be his scapegoat, playing on his delusion of appearing perfect.

A later episode, “My Favorite Things”, reveals that Serpentor can assume the facial features of those whose DNA are included in his genetic composition. In addition, a few more donors to Serpentor’s creation are revealed: a Viking warrior known as “Ulrik the Batterer”, and the reptilian king “Takshaka” from Indian mythology. Throughout season 2, Cobra Commander attempts several times to kill Serpentor through different plots.
