Rulers of the Sun Figure History
Pig-Head
Pig-Head
Pig-Head is the nemesis of the Rulers of the Sun gang. Where Skeletor is He-Man’s counter-part, so is Pig-Head to Sun-Man. Pig Head has an interesting green skin color, boar like tusks protruding from his mouth and a big pig-like snout for a nose. He wears a teal-colored helmet with pink horns, pink wrist bracers, teal colored chest, burgundy chest strap and matching burgundy belt with red accents. His shorts are interesting as they are of a light-yellow color but look like they have a scaly texture, unlike the loin cloths of the rest of the MOTU gang. He wears teal colored boots with pink furry tops. Pig-Head is wheedling a teal spiked mace and pink and teal colored shield. Pig-Head is a very interesting character in the Rulers of the Sun, as he is the only non-humanoid beast-like creature in the group. I think this is great to bring variety to the group, as MOTU fans are fond of creature like characters, so he fits in nicely! Again, he too matches his vintage counter-part in classic origins fashion.

The vintage Olmec Rulers of the Sun Pig Head figure features a bright green-skinned warrior with a menacing pig-like face, complete with tusks and piercing yellow eyes. He wears a blue helmet with pink horn-like accents, a matching blue chest plate, blue boots with pink cuffs, and a brown strap running diagonally across his torso. His accessories include a pink-rimmed blue shield and a spiked blue mace. The carded version displays the figure against a vivid orange and red blister card with the Rulers of the Sun logo, promotional bursts advertising a free mini comic and fan club, and dynamic background art. The Masters of the Universe Origins release draws directly from this classic design, keeping the bold colors, unique helmet, and iconic accessories that defined the original Pig Head.

Space Sumo
Space Sumo
Space Sumo, the last of this group is the Rulers of the Sun’s asian representation. He is a fairly simple looking character, wearing black chest armor, black belt with green diamond, red shorts, red and teal wrist bracers with the same green diamonds as the belt, and red boots with green toes. He carries a silver ninja sword which is pretty cool looking. His head however is where this Origins version of Space Sumo differs from his vintage counter-part. The vintage version had human head, which seemed to look like a lighter-skinned version of Sun Man V2 head sculpt but with a ninja separate hood for his head, so he can be displayed hooded or non-hooded. The origins version however comes with a sculpted-on hood on the head similar to Ninjor, and does not let you expose the character’s human face.

The vintage Olmec Rulers of the Sun Space Sumo figure features a muscular warrior with tan skin, wearing a black harness over a red and green outfit, red wristbands, and matching red boots with green tops. He comes with a black katana-style sword and a removable black helmet that covers his entire head, leaving only the eyes visible. Without the helmet, his sculpted hair is styled in a flat-top cut, showcasing his determined facial expression. The Masters of the Universe Origins release pays tribute to this original figure by preserving the signature color scheme, removable helmet feature, and weapon design that defined Space Sumo in the vintage line.

Sun Man Version 2
Here we can see Sun-Man Version 2, which has not been released, nor assigned to an announced wave yet. His is similar to Sun-Man version 1, except he comes with a more serious head sculpt and a flat-top hair style. Some may say they prefer this head sculpt over the version 1 head. In my opinion, I don’t see why they couldn’t just release 1 version of Sun-Man and pack him with alternate heads. It seems silly to have to purchase both. Here again Version 2 comes with the same sun shield, red staff and signature yellow wings! Chest armor, boots, shorts and red bracers are all the same as version 1. And again, he too closely reassembles his vintage counterpart as you can see from the images below.
