History of My Little Pony

“My Little Pony” was a media franchise developed by Hasbro. The franchise began in the early 1980s and has gone through several iterations, adaptations, and expansions over the years. It had an accompanying cartoon and other merchandise from bed sheets, to pajamas, to lunch boxes and coloring books. In the 1980’s, My Little Pony was everywhere!

The original My Little Pony line was created in 1981 by designer Bonnie Zacherle and was first introduced to the public in 1983. The original toys were small plastic ponies that featured colorful bodies, long manes, and unique symbols on their flanks, known as “cutie marks.” The toys quickly gained popularity, leading to a range of merchandise including accessories, playsets, and animated specials. The first animated special, “My Little Pony: The Movie,” was released in 1986. The original characters and stories revolved around the adventures of the ponies in a magical land called Ponyland. This generation lasted through the late 1980s and early 1990s before interest waned, leading to a decline in toy sales and the discontinuation of the original line in 1992.

From leg warmers, to kripped hair to rainbow colored locks, the original My Little Pony toys by Hasbro were a staple of many 80’s child’s collection! After a period of dormancy, the My Little Pony brand was revived in 2003 with a new line of products known as the “G2” ponies. These ponies featured different designs and storytelling styles. Although the G2 generation saw some success, it ultimately lacked the same cultural impact as the first generation and was phased out by 2009. New Generations of cartoons and toys followed the first generation of classic Ponies, but none will match up to the original 1980’s toy line and cartoon! Throughout all the generations of My Little Pony, the common core theme of the franchise of friendship and celebrating individuality remained!

The original series aired from 1986 to 1987 and consisted of two seasons with a total of 65 episodes. The show follows a group of magical ponies who live in the colorful and enchanting land of Ponyland. Each pony has its own unique personality and abilities, often embodying different traits associated with friendship, which plays a central theme throughout the series. Notable characters included Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and others.

The animation style was colorful and whimsical, aimed primarily at young children. The stories often dealt with themes of friendship, kindness, and adventure, showcasing the importance of relationships among the characters. The original 1980s series was accompanied by various specials and movies, including “The 1986 My Little Pony Movie,” which expanded on the stories of the ponies and introduced new characters and adventures. Though the original series has since become a nostalgic classic, it laid the groundwork for subsequent iterations, including the more contemporary “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” that began in 2010, which reimagined the franchise for a new generation.
