New MOTU Core Battle of Subternia Subline or Packaging Refresh Coming?
Sometimes the best intel comes not from official reveals but from the quiet shifts in how products get listed behind the scenes, and that’s exactly the kind of trail we’ve been following with the MOTU Core kids line. We already knew that Evil-Lyn and another He-Man variant were on the way for 2026, and more recently we shared that Trap Jaw is also headed to MOTU Core, but the details around how these figures would be packaged and branded have remained a bit of a mystery. Now Walmart listings may have tipped Mattel’s hand, because the titles associated with these upcoming figures have shifted in a way that caught our attention. Earlier listings used a series of internal code names that we’ve been tracking under what the community has dubbed the “CORE GID” designation, but updated listing titles now reference something called “Battle of Subternia,” which immediately raises the question of whether we’re looking at a brand new subline within the MOTU Core umbrella or simply a packaging refresh designed to keep things looking fresh on the pegs heading into the next retail cycle. Mattel’s MOTU team historically does annual packaging updates to maintain shelf presence, so a cosmetic rebrand wouldn’t be unusual, but the specificity of “Battle of Subternia” as a name feels like it could carry more weight than just a new card back design. It’s worth noting that Evil-Lyn, Trap Jaw, and this new He-Man variant could also simply represent the Wave 5 Core figure assortment rolling out under refreshed branding, and we could be reading more into the naming convention than what’s actually there. We’re still piecing things together and connecting the dots between what the cryptic early listings suggested and what these updated titles might mean, but the timing lines up nicely with SDCC 2026, which could be exactly where Mattel pulls back the curtain on whatever direction this is heading.

The Walmart listing for MOTU Core GID He-Man uses a placeholder “Image Coming Soon” graphic, with no figure photography available yet. The Key Item Features section repeats “MOTU CORE GID HE-MAN” three times, confirming the figure’s name while the “Battle of Subternia” subtitle carries over from the product title.

The Walmart listing for MOTU Core Evil-Lyn mirrors the same placeholder treatment, with “Image Coming Soon” standing in for any figure photography. The Key Item Features section lists “MOTU CORE EVIL-LYN” three times under the “Battle of Subternia” product title, confirming her inclusion in the assortment even though no visual details of the figure have surfaced yet. Given that the Core line is nailing the likenesses of the figures, this will probably be spot on to Alison Brie.

The Trap Jaw listing follows the same placeholder format with the Battle of Subternia branding, with “Image Coming Soon” filling the space where figure photography would be. The Key Item Features section repeats “MOTU CORE GID TRP JW” three times, and while no visual details exist yet, the abbreviated name has us wondering if this could be a Core-scaled take on the Cannon Transform Trap Jaw, stripped of the action feature and fitted with a standard-sized arm.
