We’ve been secretly hoping for this one! Hasbro just revealed that the Star Wars: Droids animated series is getting the Black Series treatment with a gorgeous new R2-D2 and C-3PO two-pack, and boy are we thrilled! Inspired by Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO, that beloved 1985 animated series that gave our favorite droid duo their very own spotlight, these figures feature styling pulled straight from the cartoon with Kenner-inspired packaging that is going to look amazing on the shelf. Preorders go live June 4th at 1:00pm ET on Fan Channel retailers like BBTS & EE, Amazon including Hasbro Pulse. I always loved the Droids cartoon growing up, and the fact that Hasbro is reaching back into that unique corner of Star Wars history for the Black Series just makes my collector heart sing. The packaging alone with those classic Kenner vibes is going to be so much fun to display. There’s something really cool about seeing these two rendered in their animated looks at the 6-inch scale, and I love how the styling captures that distinct hand-drawn feel of the original show. Will we see more characters from the Droids series down the line? Only time will tell, but this is a super exciting start. C-3PO and R2-D2 look fantastic together here, both styled after their appearances in the 1985 animated series. The Kenner-inspired aesthetic comes through in the slightly simplified sculpting and the warm, saturated gold on C-3PO, paired with those bright blue accents at his neck collar and midsection that feel pulled right from the cartoon’s color palette.
The card art is a real treat here, featuring a vibrant, hand-drawn scene of a red spacecraft with C-3PO and R2-D2 in the foreground, all done in that distinct Saturday morning cartoon style. A gold collector coin sits inside the blister alongside the figure, embossed with an image of both droids together.
C-3PO features concentric circle details sculpted into his torso and knee joints, adding a mechanical texture that leans into the cartoon’s simplified droid design. The gold collector coin alongside him is embossed with a scene from the animated series, reading “DROIDS” along the bottom edge.
The R2-D2 packaging carries that same vibrant Droids card art, this time showing the little astromech alongside C-3PO and what appears to be another droid in a dusty, desert-like town setting. A set of small tool accessories sits in the blister above the figure, including what look like wrenches and other mechanical implements molded in light grey plastic.
R2-D2 is loaded up with accessories here, sporting a pair of periscope-like antennae extending from his dome and multiple small tool arms deployed from his body. I like how the sculpt captures all those little panel lines and vents across the white cylindrical body, with blue details on the dome, chest panels, and the small rectangular ports that give him that simplified animated look.
R2 D2 looks incredible, and we get a closer look at his collector’s coin with what looks like tools sculpted into the coin illustration next to him.
