200x Merman MOTU Origins In Hand Review

I am so pleased to finally have this one in hand. The 200x era of Masters of the Universe holds such a special place in my heart, and Mer-Man was one of those characters who benefited the most from that 2002 redesign. He went from a somewhat goofy looking fish guy to a genuinely menacing ocean warlord, and that transformation has stuck with collectors ever since. The 2002 Mike Young Productions cartoon gave so many classic MOTU villains a serious visual overhaul, but Mer-Man’s might be the most dramatic of the bunch. That angular, predatory head sculpt, the layered armor, the overall sense that this guy actually crawled out of the depths of the Crystal Sea to cause real problems for He-Man. It was a revelation back then, and seeing Mattel revisit that design in the Origins line is incredibly satisfying. So let’s take a look at the 200x Merman MOTU Origins in hand review! This figure stands at the standard 5.5 inches with up to 16 points of articulation, keeping it right in line with the rest of the Origins collection. He comes packed with both his trident and his sword, giving you options for display and posing. The 200x Cartoon Collection packaging is a nice touch too, immediately setting these apart from the standard Origins releases on the shelf. What I love about Mattel’s approach here is how they’re honoring the 200x aesthetic while still working within the classic Origins body style. It gives the figure this wonderful blend of retro charm and that sharper, more detailed 2002 sensibility. For those of us who grew up watching that cartoon and wishing we had figures that matched what we saw on screen, this line is a dream come true. We want to give a huge thanks to Big Bad Toy Store for sending us this 200x Merman MOTU Origins for review, and if he has been on your must have list, you can still grab him now at Big Bad Toy Store.

The card art features Castle Grayskull’s iconic stone facade flanked by fiery red skies, with the classic block lettering stacked across the top. You can see how the clear blister gives you a nice preview of Mer-Man’s teal and gold color scheme, along with his trident and sword tucked alongside him.

Here’s a closer look at the back of Mer-Man’s card, and the artwork is fantastic. The illustration shows him charging forward alongside a massive sea serpent, trident raised, with a smaller armored figure lurking behind them in what looks like a deep ocean cavern, all tied to “The Deep End” episode callout.

Figure Details

Mer-Man’s 200X redesign really comes through here, with that teal skin contrasting sharply against the warm gold armor pieces covering his chest, wrists, and shins. I’m really digging the turquoise gems set into both the chest plate and the ornate belt buckle, which tie the whole color scheme together while giving the figure a distinctly aquatic, regal feel.

Here’s a closer look at Mer-Man’s profile, and you can see how the webbed fin detailing on his wrist guards flares out past the hands, adding a nice amphibian texture to the gold accessories. The trident and sword are both molded in that same warm gold tone, with the sword featuring a jagged, serrated blade that has a really satisfying organic, coral-like quality to it.

Here’s a closer look at Mer-Man from behind, and the gold back armor piece has a great sculpted spine running down the center with segmented ridges that flow naturally into the flared shoulder guards. The pleated maroon loincloth hangs with nice folds from the gold belt, and his helmet’s rear crest has a sharp, crown-like fin that adds a lot of character to the silhouette.

From this side profile, you can see how Mer-Man’s shin guards have a series of sharp, fin-like barbs running along the outer edge, giving those yellow armor pieces a real crustacean quality. His webbed toes splay out naturally against the surface, with each digit individually sculpted and separated, which is a nice touch for a figure at this scale.

200x Merman MOTU Origins IH 6

Armed with both his trident and serrated sword, Mer-Man looks great fully loaded, and the coral-like branching at the base of the trident staff really pops when you see it at full length like this. I noticed that the turquoise crest on his forehead catches your eye immediately, framed by those yellow eyes and that grimacing, slightly downturned mouth full of tiny sculpted teeth.

200x Merman MOTU Origins IH 7

You can see how Mer-Man looks with both weapons in play simultaneously, and the serrated sword really complements the trident’s organic silhouette when they’re paired together in an action-oriented setup. Something I appreciate here is how the webbed shoulder guards flex and move with the arms without looking awkward, staying flush against the upper body even in wider poses.

Mer-Man’s trident really shows off its full length here, and the organic, skeletal claw at the tip has a great sense of weight and proportion against the figure’s frame. I like how the gold kneecap discs on each leg break up the transition between the teal skin and yellow shin armor, adding another layer of detail to an already busy lower half.

Here’s a closer look at Mer-Man’s head and upper torso, and the face sculpt is fantastic. Those piercing yellow-green eyes sit deep under a heavy brow ridge, flanked by that teal webbed crest that fans upward like a crown, while his slightly parted mouth reveals a row of small, individually sculpted teeth set into that golden, beak-like jaw.

Here’s a closer look at Mer-Man’s lower half, and that ornate belt buckle has a fantastic sculpted butterfly-wing shape in gold with a small turquoise stone centered right at the top of the maroon loincloth. The yellow shin guards feature teal, trident-shaped emblems molded directly into the front face of each piece, a subtle design choice that echoes his aquatic weaponry and ties the leg armor back to the overall theme.

The sword’s serrated blade is packed with layered, tooth-like ridges that taper toward a pointed tip, and the crossguard fans out into an elaborate sunburst shape with a small oval gem at its center. I like how the yellow fin on his right wrist flares out dramatically past the grip, with its scalloped, webbed edges adding a convincing aquatic texture to the forearm armor.

200x Merman MOTU Origins IH 12

Mer-Man’s left hand has a great sculpted webbing between each finger, with the teal skin stretching naturally across the digits as they grip the trident shaft. I like how the gold wrist guard on this arm sits snugly against the forearm, its fin flaring outward with the same scalloped membrane texture seen on the opposite side, keeping the symmetry consistent.

The card art for Mer-Man features a massive green serpentine creature looming behind fiery reds and deep shadows, and the teal and gold color palette of the figure sitting in the blister complements that 200x aesthetic perfectly. Mer-Man looks awesome on card, with those rich greens and golds tying the whole presentation together in a way that feels cohesive from top to bottom.
