Horde Evil Robot MOTU Origins Concept

The Evil Robot is one of those deep cut Masters of the Universe prototypes that most collectors have only ever seen in a handful of grainy catalog images, which is exactly what makes this custom concept from @alf_inflikt on Instagram so remarkable. Using 3D printing and a carefully considered paint application, he’s brought to life an unproduced figure that never made it past the prototype stage back in 1985, and the results are stunning. The Evil Robot was originally depicted in a Mattel catalog update sheet believed to have been distributed to sales representatives and retailers, where it was positioned as a robotic servant of Skeletor and the Evil Warriors, but its color scheme and that distinctive bat-shaped insignia on its chest tell a different story, one that points much more clearly toward Hordak and the Evil Horde. It’s fascinating to think about where this figure would have fit in the lineup had it gone into production, likely serving as an elite robotic enforcer operating alongside the standard Horde Troopers, and one of its planned action features was a water-squirting rifle activated by moving the figure’s right arm, which would have set it apart from anything else on the shelves at the time. With Mattel continuing to mine the depths of MOTU lore for the Origins line, including recent Horde-adjacent releases like the Fright Pit Slime Pit, seeing a talented customizer tackle something this obscure and execute it at this level really hits the sweet spot for collectors who love the intersection of vintage history and modern craftsmanship. The mechanical design stands apart from the traditional MOTU aesthetic in a way that feels genuinely unique, and I love how this concept imagines what could have been if Mattel had followed through on one of the line’s most mysterious unproduced figures. Only a handful of images of the original prototype are known to exist, so the fact that someone has now rendered it as a tangible, paintable, poseable figure is a gift to the community, and it makes you wonder whether Mattel might one day take a swing at making the Evil Robot official.

Evil Robot

The Evil Robot was a late-stage Masters of the Universe prototype developed near the end of the original toy line. Although the 1985 Mattel catalog depicted it as a robotic servant of Skeletor and the Evil Warriors, its color scheme and bat-shaped insignia suggest a stronger connection to Hordak and the Evil Horde. The figure appears to have been intended as an elite robotic enforcer that would have existed alongside the standard Horde Troopers. One of its planned action features was a water-squirting rifle that activated when the figure’s right arm was moved. With its unique design and mechanical features, the Evil Robot stood apart from the traditional MOTU aesthetic. Only a handful of images of the prototype are known to exist, all originating from a 1985 Mattel catalog update sheet believed to have been distributed to sales representatives and retailers.

Evil Robot Teases

The Evil Robot has a been teased twice now plus @fetch.franciscoetchart used the Starship from an early Eternia playlet concept in the scene with the Evil Robot from the Sketch Book Man-E-Faces!

The Evil Robot Horde was also teased on the Fright Pit box art by @axel.gimenez (coloring by dc_alonso_colorist) and it captures the look of the original 1985 catalog concept almost perfectly, with the red chest plate, green limbs, and that distinctive Horde insignia on the torso all faithfully recreated. The mechanical detailing across the body, from the segmented legs to the blocky shoulder construction, nails the utilitarian robotic design that set this figure apart from everything else in the line.

Figure Details

A full diorama scene places the Evil Robot Horde front and center at the gates of the Fright Zone playset, surrounded by fellow Evil Horde members including Hordak and his…well…Horde. That robot fits right in with Hordak’s crew, and seeing it staged alongside the skull-topped throne really sells the connection.

The full body of the Evil Robot Horde brings together that dark chest block, green limbs, and red head into a cohesive package that feels like it belongs in the vintage MOTU world while standing apart from anything else in the line. The Horde insignia on the chest, the blocky mechanical proportions, and the cannon arm all work together to sell this as a proper Horde enforcer.

The front of the torso carries a blocky, almost industrial construction, with sculpted panel lines and riveted details across the chest armor. A small gun barrel extends from one arm, matching the utilitarian, militaristic vibe of the overall sculpt.

The side of the torso has sculpted venting slats and small rectangular panel details that give the body a machine-like density, while the blocky leg segments stack in a very mechanical, piston-like arrangement.

I love how this pose makes the Evil Robot look like it’s charging straight at me. With one massive arm thrust forward, the other pulled back, and the head angled slightly down, the articulation creates a convincing sense of forward momentum. The wide stance and staggered legs reinforce that aggressive motion, making the figure feel like it’s powering across the battlefield instead of simply standing still. It’s a great example of how the range of movement lets the bulky design pull off surprisingly wide ranges of action poses.

From this angle, the right side of the body shows a large black panel with white dot and grid patterns printed on it, giving the torso a control console feel. The right arm geatures a module sits mounted at the lower arm area, with a smooth cylindrical shroud and a white-capped muzzle.

I really like how this pose shows that the Evil Robot is more than just a brick with arms. Both shoulders are swung outward while the elbows are bent, letting the oversized forearms reach well away from the body to demonstrate a surprisingly wide range of motion. The legs are planted in a stable stance with the knees slightly bent, showing off the articulation in the hips and knees.

The Evil Robot Horde’s head is turned to the side, looking toward the unpainted gray prototype standing next to it, and it’s clear Alf is building his army. Several Evil Horde members fill the scene, including Hordak perched on the Fright Zone throne above, while a green slime creature sits at the robot’s feet.

The gun on the arm features a smooth cylindrical barrel with a sculpted shroud wrapping around it, ending in a distinct muzzle tip that gives it a chunky, industrial weapon look. It’s a solid piece of kit for a robot enforcer, and the proportions feel right for the era.

you can also see the chunky yellow canister mounted on top of the torso and the red head crest, along with the segmented arm housing that wraps around the cannon module. Behind the robot, the gray unpainted figure offers a nice size comparison, its bare surface showing off the raw sculptural shapes before any paint brings them to life.

The back of the torso is covered in sculpted mechanical detail, with recessed panel lines, ventilation slats, and rectangular readout sections printed in white against the green and dark body panels. A cylindrical green drum sits between the shoulder blocks, adding bulk to the upper back.

Those knee joints allow a deep bend that really shows off the range in the legs, with the segmented lower limbs folding tightly against the upper thigh blocks. Pretty impressive articulation for a figure this bulky.

Evil Robot Horde MOTU Origins Concept 2

Staged in front of the Fright Zone’s gaping pit entrance, the Evil Robot Horde fills the space with that broad, blocky frame, the red head and green body contrasting sharply against the stone-gray playset walls. That’s a natural home for this thing.
