Shadow Beast Vintage MOTU Origins Build-A-Figure Wave Details

Coming out of all the Masters of the Universe reveals at this year’s SDCC 2026 booth, one of the details that really caught my attention was learning that MOTU Origins is getting its own Build-A-Figure wave, and the Build-A-Figure itself is none other than the Shadow Beast. We got the full breakdown from Mattel on which figures will make up this wave, and the lineup is a strong one: Beast Man, Battle Armor Man-At-Arms, a vintage style He-Man, a vintage style Skeletor, Mer-Man, and Man-E-Faces. That’s a solid spread of core characters, and what makes it even more interesting is the direction Mattel described for the wave as a whole. We were told this line is designed to pay homage to the vintage figures in a way that represents the mini comic and card back art, which immediately sets it apart from the standard Origins releases we’ve been collecting over the past few years. The idea of getting figures that lean into that illustrated, slightly exaggerated aesthetic from the original packaging and pack-in comics is really appealing, and it gives Mattel a reason to revisit these iconic characters without it feeling like a simple re-release. I love how the Shadow Beast works as the Build-A-Figure here too, because it’s the kind of deep cut creature that fits perfectly as an incentive to pick up the full wave rather than cherry-picking one or two figures. Build-A-Figure waves aren’t something we’ve really seen in Origins before, so this feels like a meaningful evolution for the line, and I’m curious to see how the mini comic and card back art influence actually translates into the sculpt and deco choices on each figure. Can’t wait to see official images of these start rolling out.

Shadow Beast Build-A-Figure Wave

A full lineup of the Shadow Beast Build-A-Figure wave, with He-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, Man-At-Arms, Mer-Man, and Man-E-Faces all gathered on clear disc stands alongside the towering Shadow Beast looming above them. A packaged Man-At-Arms sits off to the side, his card art showing the figure framed in a red burst design with painted artwork across the top.

Mer-Man’s teal and yellow color split is sharp, with the segmented chest armor carrying a small skull emblem at the center. His head sculpt has a wide-eyed, almost startled expression with a pronounced beak-like mouth, staying faithful to the vintage design.

This is the most vintage style He-Man we’ve seen in the MOTU Origins line. He-Man’s gray chest harness features the classic iron cross design with a bold red “H” at the center, and the studded orange belt sits cleanly above the brown fur trunks. His shield has a riveted circular design with orange inlay panels between the raised studs.

Man-At-Arms wears a heavy orange chest armor with layered plating, hoses, and his battle armor breastplate, his translucent weapons are a cool touch. His blue helmet has sculpted geometric detailing along the brim, and a thick black mustache anchors the stern face sculpt underneath.

Man-At-Arms carries a mace with a ribbed handle and a bulbous head, and his shield has a circular sculpt with raised rivets across its face.

Skeletor’s purple chest armor has a sculpted bone-and-rivet pattern with a large central dome, and the matching segmented tasset hangs over his blue frame. Mer-Man is partially visible beside him, his yellow scaled armor and teal skin providing a strong color contrast.

Man-E-Faces is decked out in blue armor plating from head to toe, with purple accents running through the chest harness, belt, and knee pads. His helmet has a narrow rectangular visor framing a red-eyed face, and the blaster he’s carrying has a chunky, compact sci-fi design with layered barrel ridges.

Beast Man’s red chest armor is loaded with sculpted fur texture and jagged spikes jutting from the shoulders, with a small concentric-circle emblem set into the chest. He carries a whip with a thin cord and a chunky handle, and his orange skin has a nice warm tone against the blue trunks and yellow belt.

Shadow Beast carries a spiked mace with a nicely detailed spherical head and riveted handle. The fur texture across the entire body is deeply sculpted with layered, shaggy striations, and those glowing orange eyes paired with the bared fangs give the head sculpt a lot of character.
