Battle of Eternia MOTU Core Playset Diorama Behind The Scenes

When we first got a look at the Battle for Eternia 2-in-1 playset reveal, it was clear Mattel was swinging big with the Core line, and now we’re getting a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse at one of the most impressive dioramas built to showcase it. Film industry modelmaker and concept designer Josef, known on Instagram as @forge_of_thenur, was the creative force behind the stunning Core line diorama constructed for Mattel’s and Smyths Toys Germany’s Eternia Tour, and the level of craft that went into this thing is something every collector needs to see. Josef describes the concept behind the Battle for Eternia playset as genius, and I have to agree with him on that, because combining two of the most iconic locations on Eternia into a single playset is the kind of ambitious move that feels like it was pulled straight from a childhood daydream where Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain existed in the same sprawling battlefield. What really struck me about this behind-the-scenes look is how methodical and deliberate the process was, with the entire diorama planned out in 3D before being physically constructed using Styrofoam and PLA, which gave Josef the precision he needed to bring the vision together at scale. The smooth surfaces and subtle paint scheme were intentional choices designed to unify all the elements into a cohesive, cohesive overall look, and you can really see that philosophy pay off in the finished dio where every piece feels like it belongs together rather than competing for attention. We’ve followed this playset from its official images all the way through to its preorder going live, and seeing the craftsmanship that went into building a diorama worthy of displaying it just adds another layer of appreciation for how special this release is within the Core line. Huge thanks to Josef for sharing this process with the community, because getting to see the artistry and planning behind a diorama like this is the kind of content that makes the hobby so rewarding to follow.

Behind the Scenes

Josef is positioning figures across his custom-built diorama, and the craftsmanship is immediately striking. The sculpted rock formations and purple energy sections match the playset’s color palette so closely that the diorama pieces blend seamlessly with the Castle Grayskull playset elements, making it genuinely difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Josef’s 3D render breaks the diorama into color-coded sections, showing how each sculpted piece was planned before physical construction. The skull-faced castle facade, stepped stone stairway, rocky mountain base, and purple spine-like energy formations are all clearly separated as individual modular components.

A raw, unpainted section of the diorama sits on the workbench, showing the layered construction of Styrofoam and PLA before any finish work. The organic rock textures are already fully sculpted into the surface, with deep crevices and irregular formations shaped by hand.

The completed diorama pieces integrate so naturally with the Castle Grayskull playset that the whole display reads as one massive, cohesive environment. The close-up on the skull facade shows how Josef’s purple rock formations and stone stairway sections frame and extend the playset’s architecture, making it feel like a full fortress built into a mountainside rather than a standalone toy.

Pulled back to take in the full scope, the diorama spans multiple levels and environments, from the Castle Grayskull facade and its purple rock stairway on the left to a forested battle scene on the upper right, with small-scale figures populating every tier. The sheer amount of ground this thing covers is impressive, and the unified paint scheme ties it all together into something that genuinely looks like a single massive Eternia landscape.

Beast Man and He-Man face off across the stone bridge, with Teela and several other figures scattered throughout the purple rock formations behind them. @madosa.customs captured the diorama at figure level here, and the sense of scale is fantastic.

The close-up on the Snake Mountain section reveals incredible sculpt work on the serpent head entrance, with layered scale textures wrapping around the open jaw and a spiked portcullis gate set into the mouth. The purple rock formations Josef built flow right up to and around the playset structure with such precision that the transition between custom diorama and production toy is nearly invisible.

The bridge leading up to Castle Grayskull is where Josef’s craftsmanship really shines, with individually sculpted stone bricks stacked in irregular, hand-laid patterns that give the structure a weathered, ancient feel. Skeletor holds court atop the skull facade while Beast Man guards the gate below, and He-Man charges across the stonework, every surface holding up beautifully at this close range.
