GI Joe Classified Series 2024 Iron Grenadiers Faction Potential Figures and Vehicles

With the name only pipeline reveal of the Iron Grenadiers figure and the reveal of Metal-Head, it appears that the GI Joe Classified Series could be going deep on the faction. Do we dare to say that 2024 will be the year of the Iron Grenadiers? With the box reveal of Metal-Head with the Iron Grenadiers branding on the shoulder and the box images showing the Iron Grenadiers logo on the box, collectors could be in for a treat if the GI Joe Classified Series goes all in on the faction. With figures being the only slam dunk for the faction, vehicles will most likely be few and far between and, realistically, we night not get any unless they are tied to a HasLab (*sigh*). With the new leaked list of 2024 named and codenamed figures, we could see some of the Iron Grenadiers faction come to the line beyond Metal-Head and the Iron Grenadier trooper. A figure we are likely to see in 2024 is the rumored Iron Grenadiers B.A.T., a figure sculpt that has lent itself to the Polar and Crimson factions. In this article, we delve deep into the Iron Grenadiers faction by look at the vintage line and amazing customs from the community, which includes the insanely talented Stronox Customs, Slice’s Customs, and gijoe_customz, so that we can visualize what a GI Joe Classified Series Iron Grenadiers subline could be!

The Iron Grenadiers are led by Destro. Following the storyline in the comic book series at the time, the file cards indicate that Destro had, at some point, left Cobra and formed his own army. He begins having dreams of world domination, as did Cobra Commander. Here is Destro’s filecard alluding to his plans for world domination! His bio reads, “Once a major supplier and advisor to Cobra, Destro now pursues his own diabolical aims. Building up a small army of Iron Grenadiers from his private bodyguards, he incites unrest in unstable countries, creating new markets for his armaments. As his influence grows around the world, he dreams the dreams that Cobra Commander once dreamed. One of Destro’s ancestors started the family fortune by selling arms to both sides during the English civil war. One ancestor was caught in the act by Cromwell’s men, and was made to wear an uncomfortable steel mask. Since that time, the Destro clan have worn the mask with pride and passed it down to succeeding generations!”

Iron Grenadier Army GI Joe

Iron Grenadiers

The Iron Grenadiers represent the first of a new generation of private armies. When most men in that type of company tend to be satisfied by simply being paid for their services, Destro does one better by making them active participants for his growing arms business. Not content to be merely hired infantry, these men are encouraged to come up with devious ways to convince the clients that their sales and services are needed. If successful in the transaction, their commission is a percentage of gross sales.

File Card Bio:

The Iron Grenadiers are handpicked from Destro's personal bodyguards. They are the spearhead of Destro's incursions into new territory. The Iron Grenadiers, acting as agents, provocateurs, saboteurs or outright terrorists, impel an unsuspecting country towards chaos and turmoil, thereby creating new markets for Destro's weapons where none existed before. Their pay is a percentage of gross sales.

"Imagine the slickest used car salesman you've ever met. Now imagine that he's also the trickiest accountant in the world. Got that? Try to picture what he would be like if that guy was also a highly trained commando with expertise in explosives, small arms and hand-to-hand combat. Top it off with the fact that no other mercenary group in the world wants them because of their history of turning on their superiors. That's what an Iron Grenadier is..."

Iron Grenadiers GI Joe Classified Series Concept

Stronox Customs has created a perfect GI Joe Classified Series scale Iron Grenadiers figure and this is likely what a figure would look like! I love the real chair that was used to hang the sword sheath from the belt and the overall aesthetic of the figure.

Annihilator

Annihilators are troops that use special helicopter backpacks. They are Destro’s personal bodyguards and elite airborne assault troops. They can be deployed by sea, air, and land “take-off” with their mini-turbine Heli-packs on their backs and descend upon their targets like armored locusts. Annihilators are recruited from the ranks of the Iron Grenadiers.

Annihilators are recruited from the ranks of the Iron Grenadiers. As part of their indoctrination into the Annihilator Corps, they must serve an apprenticeship as hard-sell telephone solicitors, procuring sales for Destro's M.A.R.S.* armaments corporation. Not only does this help to increase Destro's coffers, but it also reinforces their tenacity and ruthlessness!

"Annihilators don't get medals, they get shares of stock in M.A.R.S. and active participation in Destro's profit sharing plan! These guys are the ultimate specialists in hostile takeovers!"

Their re-entry over their target could easily be mistaken for a meteor shower - until they start shooting!

"T.A.R.G.A.T.s are quite formidable as assault troopers, but their psychological impact on defending troops is even greater! Who wants to have to fight a person who's crazy enough to turn himself into a human meteor?"

His wetsuit is made of a nontoxic, anti-corrosive material. His facemask is coated with silicone to repel oil slicks, and is organically conditioned against hostile biological agents and infections.

"Undertow will swim through ANYTHING! This guy makes leeches look friendly! It's almost impossible to defeat him in his own environment! If we have to take him on in his own backyard, we first have to get tetanus booster shots before we move out for action. The best defense against this slime-swimmer is to keep a safe distance and throw grenades from behind a well fortified enclosure."

Iron Anvil

Iron Anvil is an Iron Grenadier character from the A Real American Hero series.

Iron-Anvil-2005-GI-Joe-Concvention-Exclusive
Source: Boonsart

File Card Bio:

Iron Anvil paratroopers are Destro's elite airborne commandos. They are only used when brute force is necessary to complete a hostile take-over by the M.A.R.S. (Military Armaments Research Systems) Corporation. These specialized assault troopers are sent in ahead of the ground forces to overwhelm enemy defenses. Their primary missions focus on the subversion of major economic and military installations by either destroying them, or putting them out of action. Iron Anvil troops have a tactical advantage in that they can appear on the battlefield anywhere that aircraft can deploy them. However, they prefer to be dropped from low-flying helicopters and like their namesake, make small impact craters wherever they land.

Each trooper wears a self-contained bio-suit that is protected by layers of composite and reactive plated body armor that acts like a shock absorber for their earthbound landings. This suit is an updated and redesigned version of the Viper uniform Cobra deployed in 1994 and still features reinforced bio-hinges and armor plated, blast resistant helmets with built-in night vision visors and oxygen filters. The "hard-landing" tactic has both a psychological impact as well as demoralizing effect on their adversaries. Once on the ground, Iron Anvil troopers engage in close quarter combat using their expert hand-to-hand fighting skills to apprehend prisoners for slave labor in one of Destro's new factories.

Unlike the rest of the the Iron Grenadier air forces, Iron Anvils require a method of airborne transport to insertion points. After "hitting the ground", Iron Anvils become infantry commandos until extraction and redeployment. This makes the Iron Anvils the least flexible of the Destro's air arm, but one of the his fiercest combat units. Iron Anvils know that unless they complete their primary objective, the rest of the Iron Grenadiers won't be able to come in to pull them out.

From intelligence gatherings: "Destro (an international arms dealer) is always expanding his M.A.R.S. (Military Armaments Research Systems) Corporation to create new weapons factories all around the world. He has set his sights on several secret industrial complexes in the former Soviet Union and is using his inside man (General Mayhem, a former Spetsnaz officer and brilliant strategist), to execute his plan. With his new Iron Grenadiers and elite brigade of Iron Anvil Paratroopers led by Metal Head, Destro’s forces have invaded a former Soviet Bloc toy factory and plan to ship weapons systems under the toy brand of Destr-uct-o Blocs. Under this cover, they believe that they will be able to distribute their products globally, unnoticed by the western world."

Iron Grenadiers Troopers and Vehicles

The troopers that made up the Iron Grenadiers vehicles drivers under Destro’s Iron Grenadiers

Ferret and D.E.M.O.N.

The Ferrets are the operators of the D.E.M.O.N. tanks.Unbeknownst to Destro’s clients, the D.E.M.O.N. tank vehicle is not exactly what it appears to be. Underneath that fancy looking war machine, much was sacrificed for speed, range and weaponry. Except for the driver, any other crew member is exposed and unprotected from enemy fire. It, therefore, falls to the Ferret to not only make the D.E.M.O.N. look like one of the meanest machines to roll on the battlefield but to make it function as such. The kind of men that make up the Ferret ranks tend to have very positive attitude. They have to be, they can’t be bothered to remember the limitations of the vehicle they are driving.

D.E.M.O.N. – The D.E.M.O.N. (Dual Elevating Multi-Ordinance Neutralizer) was first released in 1988, packaged with the Ferret figure. The main body of the tank elevated in attack mode, in order to better view the battlefield. It was armed with several triple-barrel lasers, and six anti-aircraft missiles.[6]

Ferrets are the backbone of Destro's Armored Assault squadrons, chosen and trained based on their doggedly positive attitudes. Their battle vehicles, the D.E.M.O.N.s, are expected to spearhead long range mechanized attacks to neutralize enemy strong points, as well as to capture and hold landing zones for airborne insertions. Since the design priorities for the D.E.M.O.N. key on speed, range, and offensive firepower, much was sacrificed in the area of crew protection, comfort and safety.

Nullifier and A.G.P.

Nullifiers are pilots of the A.G.P. (Anti-Gravity Pod) flight vehicle. The Nullifiers were introduced in the 1988 series of A Real American Hero toys, available exclusively with the Anti-Gravity Pod.

Nullifier-AGP-Driver-Vintage-Figure-1988

The A.G.P. is capable of making duplicate copies of itself. Even though these duplicates are incapable of firing any missiles, the copies are able to be some form of impediment for the GI Joe heroes. In the GI Joe game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, these copies can be destroyed by the heroes. However, if the original A.G.P. is not defeated quick enough, it can replace a destroyed copy. A hidden special vehicle within Stage 4-1 is capable of firing projectiles that can quickly destroy both, the copies and the original A.G.P.

A.G.P. – The A.G.P. (Anti-Gravity Pod) was first released in 1988, packaged with the Nullifier figure. It featured 106mm recoilless cannons, pivoting VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) capability, and six “STUNG” (Silent Titanium Under-Radar Negative Gravity) missiles.[5]

File Card Bio:

The only advantage of an ANTI-GRAVITY-POD, (considering its poor energy consumption to performance ratio) is its ability to turn sharply and to "stop on a dime." Acute maneuvers of this sort can be physically debilitating to anybody but a NULLIFIER! These A.G.P. pilots require a six hour weight workout every day simply to maintain their massive physique and high levels of endurance. Such training is necessary in order for them to command a vehicle that can reduce a normal man to a gelatinous pulp during the course of a simple turn.

"Nullifiers are fed solely on a diet of high protein gruel that looks like grey mush and tastes like wet cardboard. Their muscles are always sore and their nerves are constantly on edge from the stress. Consequently, a Nullifier usually has the temperament of a rabid pit-bull, and is more likely to bite!"

All recruits must endure a torturous training schedule that stresses discipline, discipline, and more discipline! Iron Grenadiers Officers

The figures that made up the Iron Grenadiers officers in the Iron Grenadiers faction included:

Darklon and Evader

Darklon – A distant cousin of the Destro clan and ruler of Darklonia. He briefly led the Iron Grenadiers when Destro retired from frontline conflict. Thought killed when Cobra Commander expanded operations into Eastern Europe and launched a missile that destroyed Darklon’s castle, but in reality he escaped the blast and was alive and well until captured by the G.I Joe team in the continued G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comic, issue #171 by IDW publishing.

Darklons-Evader-Iron-Grenadiers-Vehicle-Driver

Evader – Darklon’s Evader was released in 1989, and came packaged with the Darklon figure. It featured a canopy-mounted 9mm machine gun, two “Pursurer” roof-mounter stinger-type missiles, and lo-ride tires.

From his cast-iron castle in the Alps, he dispatched his private armies to do battle for the highest bidder until Destro called upon him to lead his legions in his bid to take over Cobra.

"Completely unhindered by ideology or ethics, Darklon is motivated purely by greed. His telephone solicitors have been known to drum up business for his mercenary army by offering 'reasonable hourly rates' and cash rebates!"

Voltar

Voltar – A former mercenary general capable of turning defeat into victory. Destro recruited him after rescuing him from prison.

Voltar-GI-Joe-Iron-Grenadiers-Vintage-Figure

File Card Bio:

Voltar was an extremely success mercenary commander. In fact, he was too successful for his continues presence to be tolerated by the provisional governments, revolutionary councils and military dictatorships that employed him. He could pluck victory from seemingly imminent defeat in complete defiance of the odds, always just one step ahead of disaster, never looking back. Winners never look back.

"He has that quality I admire most in a general. You know that Napoleonic anecdote? The Marshalls of France were extolling the tactical prowess of a certain young commander. The Little Corporal cut them off tersely, 'All very well and good, but tell me one thing; is he LUCKY?'" - DESTRO
