We got our hands on MOTU Origins Kol-Darr Mattel Creations exclusive, so we are here with a hands-on review! Unlike Wun-Dar, Kol-Darr was not as difficult to get a hold of on Mattel Creations as it took some time for him to sell out. So hopefully, if you wanted a Kol-Dar figure, you were able to get a hold of one. Kol-Darr, one of He-Man’s oldest friend and ally is a character straight out of the 1980’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Filmation Cartoon. He only appeared in one episode of the cartoon series, so it is odd that Mattel choose him to make an exclusive figure out of, but he is cool nonetheless.

Kol-Darr is clad in a canary yellow armor that has some texturing and shimmer to it. You will notice the familiar reuse of Tri-Klops’ and Fisto’s sword in a silver paint app. The deep gold wrist cuffs and belt add a premium feel for the figure, which is great as this is a Mattel Creations exclusive. The figure also features a reuse of Ram Man’s axe and it appears that the head sculpt is a single piece and the helmet is not removable, which is great because it streamlines the look of the figure.

Complete with his bright yellow armor, and Viking horns, Kol-Darr’s design comes straight to us from the 1980’s He-Man and the Master’s of the Universe Filmation cartoon!

If you are not familiar with Kol-Darr from the Masters of the Unvierse Filmation cartoon, here is more about him:

Kol Darr is an old friend and ally of He-Man’s. He rides a mechanical pegasus called Shadow Master. When Kol Darr came to visit He-Man at the Royal PalaceSkeletor lured him into a trap and used the Mirror of Moravad to make an evil double of him. The double asked to see the inside of Castle Grayskull, then ran off in search of its secrets. Meanwhile, the real Kol Darr tricked Skeletor into creating a good double of himself, which he sent to the Royal Palace to disable the freeze field that his double had planted and tell everyone what was happening. Kol Darr’s double eventually found the guardian of Castle Grayskull’s secrets, but was transformed to glass and shattered upon failing the guardian’s test. He-Man then left for Snake Mountain with Man-At-Arms, Teela, and Skeletor’s double, and rescued the real Kol Darr.

One of those snake men pictured was also the preview of the Camo Khan cardback art work, was Reptilax. Reptilax was part of the Snake Men Evil Warriors and is an unproduced character, so it is very interesting to see him illustrated on the back of the card art! He did appear in the vintage mini comc “King of the Snake Men”, and was featured illustrated on the cover. He looked to be a half human, half Snake Man character, with a snake like head & feet but with human torso, arms and legs. It appears that Lady Slither and Reptilax (among other) appear to be on the card art, which opens the door WIDE OPEN for this figures to be produced in the Origins line. Will this happen? One can only dream!

Kol-Darr Figure

The Kol-Darr figure is a very bright and fun looking character. Based on the He-Man body style, he is mostly a reuse of parts except for the new head, boots and body armor. He shares the same torso, arms, waist and legs as He-Man. His boots however are a reuse of the Mattel Creations Mini Comic Tri-Klops ankle guards with yellow guards and brown boots. His head is reminiscent of that of a Viking, with the brown & yellow horned helmet. He wears a Gotti as this lends some interest to his face since it is the only part showing from under his helmet. He has bright yellow body armor, gold color wrist bracers, a gold belt and brown shorts (same as He-Man’s) The back of his armor does feature a place to stow his sword, so that is a nice added feature.

Weapons

Kol-Darr comes packaged with a reuse of Tri-Klops’ and Fisto’s sword with a silver paint application. The long sword does look good in Kol-Darr’s hands and stands well with the figure. He also comes with an axe which is a reuse of Ram Man’s axe as well. In the weapon’s department, it seems that Mattel was not very creative is suppling Kol-Darr with any unique weapons of his own.
