Retro Punching He-Man and Skeletor MOTU 2-Pack 80th Anniversary In-Hand Images
Huge thanks to Sir Eldor himself, Masterversal Toyhunter (on Instagram), who has come through with some incredible in-hand images of the Retro Punching He-Man and Skeletor MOTU Origins 80th Anniversary 2-Pack! Straight from New Zealand, these photos give us the first close-up look at this set ahead of its release in the United States. Fans will remember that this 2-pack first popped up at Toy Fair 2025 and caught everyone off guard, as it wasn’t even on the radar. Seeing these figures in hand, it’s clear they were designed to harken back to the earliest days of the line, celebrating the origins of where it all began with The Most Powerful Man in the Universe and the Evil Lord of Destruction locked in eternal battle. With their vintage-inspired punching action and classic styling, they deliver a healthy dose of nostalgia that longtime collectors will instantly recognize. The artwork is done by the one and only axel.gimenez providing the pencils and dc_alonso_colorist bringing the illustrations to life with his coloring talent! While this set makes for an amazing anniversary tribute, one can’t help but wonder if Mattel has more retro-inspired packs like this up their sleeve. For the sake of our wallets, we can only hope this remains a special one-off release to commemorate Mattel’s 80-year legacy, but either way, it’s a stunning addition to any collection.

Packaging
The Retro Punching He-Man and Skeletor MOTU Origins 80th Anniversary 2-Pack packaging pays homage to the classic vintage style while celebrating the brand’s milestone. The front features vibrant artwork of He-Man raising his Power Sword and Skeletor gripping his Havoc Staff, with Castle Grayskull looming behind them. The window display lets you see both figures inside, and a retro grid design with the 80th anniversary logo anchors the bottom panel. The back of the box showcases an epic battle scene with He-Man charging forward, Skeletor ready to strike, and supporting characters like Man-At-Arms and Teela charging alongside. Below the illustration, product shots highlight the figures and their action features, with callouts showing the classic spring-loaded “power punch” mechanism that defined the originals.

The close-up view highlights the figures secured inside their display trays, giving a clear look at the sculpted details and classic vintage styling. He-Man’s muscular build and iconic harness are front and center, while Skeletor’s menacing yellow skull face peers out under his hood. The illustrated backdrop frames them in mid-battle, reinforcing their eternal clash with Castle Grayskull looming behind.

Both figures sit inside sharply cut window trays that echo the shape of the vintage blister bubbles, giving them that retro carded feel even within a boxed set. He-Man and Skeletor are centered neatly against the illustrated backdrop, with the angled plastic edges drawing attention to their torsos and faces just like the original packaging style did in the ’80s. This framing not only shows off the figures but also reinforces the nostalgic nod to their classic presentation.

The inner flap artwork showcases He-Man and Skeletor in classic heroic and villainous poses that harken back to vintage box art. On one side, He-Man stands firmly on rocky terrain with Castle Grayskull behind him and a planet filling the sky, holding both axe and shield to show his readiness for battle. On the other side, Skeletor is framed within the sinister gateway of Snake Mountain, clutching his Havoc Staff while eerie roots and jagged rock surround him, enhancing the dark and menacing atmosphere.

Once the figures are lifted out of the main box, the inner packaging really sells the retro vibe. The backdrop explodes with a red burst design straight out of the vintage era, evoking the classic card art style. He-Man and Skeletor are each mounted on their own retro-styled blister cards with bold Masters of the Universe logos at the top and rocky background artwork behind them, mimicking how they would have appeared on store pegs back in the 1980s. It’s a clever way to package them, giving collectors both a display-ready box and nostalgic single-carded presentation.

Masterversal Toyhunter lines up the vintage He-Man and Skeletor alongside their Origins 80th Anniversary counterparts for a striking side-by-side. The originals show their classic proportions and aged plastic charm, while the new figures remain locked in their blister bubbles with sharper sculpts and brighter paint. It’s a great way to see how the retro punching action was carried forward into modern form while keeping that unmistakable vintage spirit intact.

He-Man
The He-Man figure comes carded on a retro-styled blister pack with the classic Masters of the Universe logo emblazoned at the top, backed by fiery red burst artwork that mirrors the vintage releases. He-Man is posed front and center inside the clear bubble, with his shield and axe tucked neatly behind him. Flipping the card over, the backer art captures a powerful scene of He-Man leading the charge with sword and shield in hand, joined by Man-At-Arms and Teela against a looming enemy presence. The card combines nostalgia with fresh artwork, staying faithful to the origins while commemorating the 80th anniversary.

The packaging is designed with collectors in mind, allowing the figure and accessories to slide out in a plastic tray without damaging the card back or bubble. This means you can enjoy the retro card artwork on display while still handling the figure freely, then return everything back in place for a clean, mint-on-card look. Even the mini comic slips neatly behind the tray, reinforcing the vintage feel while keeping the presentation completely intact.

The plastic tray neatly secures He-Man and his gear, keeping everything visible and organized while still evoking that vintage presentation. From the front, the figure sits upright with the axe and shield tucked alongside him, while the mini comic rests just outside the tray. Flipping to the back, the sword, axe, and shield are all clearly laid out in molded slots, showing how each accessory fits snugly in place without rattling around, making for a clean and collector-friendly display.

The mini comic cover, titled “Battle in the Clouds,” perfectly recreates the look and feel of the vintage comics. The artwork by Alfredo Alcala shows He-Man grappling with Mer-Man atop a yellow Wind Raider flying over the ocean, with dramatic action lines and bold colors straight out of the early 1980s style. Even the “FREE illustrated book with purchase” burst on the corner is replicated, making this a faithful homage to the original pack-ins that defined the early Masters of the Universe line.

He-Man is shown standing with his classic accessories laid out—shield, axe, and sword—while the close-up highlights the construction of his head. Although the head is cast in softer plastic, the squeeze test demonstrates that it’s still firm and not easily compressed, giving it durability while keeping that retro feel.

He-Man is shown front and back, highlighting his muscular sculpt, silver chest harness, and classic brown trunks with red boots. The rear view shows the harness straps and working punch-action mechanism built into his back.

These shots highlight He-Man’s retro twisting action feature. By turning his torso at the waist, you can wind him up and release to deliver his classic power punch. The mechanism recreates the original vintage play pattern, bringing back that familiar feel of posing him for battle-ready strikes against Skeletor.

Here we get a look at He-Man’s accessories, which include his silver and orange shield, classic double-bladed battle axe, and his iconic Power Sword. Each piece is styled in a way that recalls the vintage weapons, keeping the sculpting simple and bold to match the retro aesthetic of the figure.

He-Man is shown posed with his classic gear in hand, bringing the retro accessories to life. On one side, he raises the Power Sword high while gripping his round orange and silver shield, ready for action. On the other, he holds the sword forward in a firm stance, his muscular build and vintage styling echoing the original figure’s iconic look.

The updated He-Man on the left has brighter colors, a cleaner silver harness with sharper red details, and a sturdier build overall, while the vintage version on the right shows softer sculpt lines, darker tones, and more wear from age. The facial expression also differs, with the new figure having a wider, smoother face compared to the narrower, more rugged look of the original.

Skeletor
Skeletor’s carded figure mirrors the classic vintage layout with the bold Masters of the Universe logo and fiery burst background setting the stage for his sinister presence inside the bubble. The figure comes with his Havoc Staff prominently displayed, framed in the same angular blister style as the originals. On the card back, Skeletor is brought to life in striking artwork, striding forward with Castle Grayskull and a looming moon behind him, while a small creature scurries at his feet, adding an extra touch of nostalgia to the scene. The presentation captures the menacing essence of the Evil Lord of Destruction while honoring the 80th anniversary.

Skeletor’s packaging keeps everything neatly contained with his weapons and mini comic secured behind the tray, giving fans easy access without tearing into the card. The backer art shows him creeping forward with menace, complete with a moonlit sky and Castle Grayskull in the distance. Sliding him out reveals “The Vengeance of Skeletor” mini comic tucked inside, rounding out the presentation with another nod to the vintage experience.

Skeletor is packed out in the same style as He-Man, with his weapons and mini comic neatly arranged in the tray for a clean, collector-friendly presentation.

The Skeletor pack includes the mini comic “The Vengeance of Skeletor,” which recreates the vintage style right down to the bold Alfredo Alcala artwork. The cover shows He-Man locked in battle with a monstrous sea creature’s tentacles, rendered in the same dramatic colors and layout as the early 1980s comics, complete with the “FREE illustrated book with purchase” callout.

Skeletor comes with the classic “squishy head” design, giving him that same soft, pliable feel as the vintage figure. The flexible material recreates the original look and texture, making this release feel like it was pulled straight out of the 80s.

Skeletor’s armor features a glossy, shiny paint app that gives it a slicker finish compared to the flat vintage style, making the bat emblem and straps pop under the light. Another nice detail is the painted silver claws on his feet, which adds an extra touch not always seen on earlier versions.

Skeletor is shown with the same waist-twisting punch action as He-Man, ready to spring into battle. The slight blur in the second shot captures the motion mid-swing.

Skeletor comes equipped with his classic Havoc Staff and a half Power Sword, both done in a deep purple plastic with a nice sheen.

Skeletor is shown wielding his Havoc Staff, and the flexible hands allow him to grip the weapon in different poses. The detail in the ram’s head comes through clearly, giving the staff a menacing look when raised for battle or held at his side.

Side by side, the two Power Swords show their classic duel of silver and purple. The silver half carries He-Man’s iconic design, while the purple half represents Skeletor’s sinister counterpart. The front view highlights their sculpted details and symmetry, while the reverse reveals the peg-and-slot system meant to connect them.

Skeletor is shown brandishing his dark purple Power Sword, gripping it tightly in his hand. The blade features the signature split design with circular cutouts, matching his armor. One pose highlights him holding the sword upright in a ready stance, while the other captures him raising it high, as if calling upon its evil power.

This shot captures a classic duel, with He-Man and Skeletor crossing their swords in close combat, emphasizing the vintage rivalry between the two.

The images show how the two halves of the Power Sword are designed to interlock, with the purple and silver blades fitting snugly together to form a complete sword. One view highlights the edge-on perspective of the connection, while the other shows He-Man holding the fully assembled weapon aloft, demonstrating the classic feature where the swords combine into a single piece.

One thing to note is that only the Wave 1 He-Man sword half fits with the 80th Anniversary He-Man sword half to form a complete Power Sword, while the Wave 1 Skeletor sword half is not compatible because the slots are different.

The Retro Punching He-Man and Skeletor 2-Pack comes full circle with this shot, showing both figures posed in front of the vibrant package art that captures their eternal clash. He-Man, sword raised and shield at the ready, faces off against Skeletor, who grips his Havoc Staff as if about to strike. The classic 80th Anniversary packaging backdrop ties it all together, highlighting the vintage feel of the set while giving collectors a nostalgic punch of the artwork that defined the era.
