The wait is finally over as the preorder and reveal of the Spinal Tap Super7 ReAction figures is set for October 11, 2024 at Noon PT according to Entertainment Earth’s drop zone. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) is a groundbreaking mockumentary directed by Rob Reiner that satirizes the world of rock ‘n’ roll, particularly the excesses and absurdities of heavy metal bands. The film follows the fictional British rock band Spinal Tap on their disastrous American tour, poking fun at everything from band dynamics to the music industry’s chaotic nature. Nigel Tufnel

With a variety of musical tastes, Nigel Tufnel isn’t just a one-dimensional metal-head, as evidenced by his quest to create a classical music mashup of Mozart and Bach titled “Lick My Love Pump”!

Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest) – Spinal Tap’s lead guitarist and David’s long-time collaborator. Derek Smalls

Derek Smalls is the lukewarm water to David and Nigel’s fire and ice, which might be the only thing keeping the entire band from spontaneously combusting like some of their unfortunate former drummers.

September 28, 2024: Spinal Tap Super7 ReAction Preorder Info

We’ve been patiently waiting to see how and when this news would materialize but it looks like Entertainment Earth’s drop zone has given us a clue! They said, “This awesome series of action figures is sure to rock your world – sadly, the drummer didn’t make it. But sign up for a reminder and you can see those who are still on tour!” As we know from the movie, Stumpy Pete, one of Spinal Tap’s drummers, met a comically absurd and mysterious fate in This Is Spinal Tap. He reportedly died in a “bizarre gardening accident,” which was so unusual that the authorities couldn’t fully explain it. The band mentions that the incident was “best left unsolved,” adding to the ridiculousness of Spinal Tap’s string of doomed drummers.

This Is Spinal Tap

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) is a mockumentary directed by Rob Reiner that parodies rock documentaries and follows the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap on a disastrous U.S. tour. Presented as a “rockumentary,” the film’s director, Marty DiBergi (played by Reiner), captures the band’s behind-the-scenes struggles, lineup changes, and embarrassing mishaps. Key characters include the band’s core members: lead singer/guitarist David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer).

Plot Summary:

  • The film chronicles Spinal Tap as they attempt to promote their latest album, Smell the Glove, but face a series of setbacks. These include poorly attended concerts, bad publicity, tensions with management, and confusion over artistic direction.
  • The band’s internal dynamics are strained, especially between Nigel and David. Nigel eventually quits the band mid-tour, but rejoins at the end.
  • The movie humorously exaggerates rock-star behavior, with iconic moments like Nigel’s amplifier going “up to 11” and the band getting lost backstage.
  • The film ends with Spinal Tap receiving unexpected success in Japan, suggesting their resilience despite constant failure.

Significance:

  • This Is Spinal Tap is considered a pioneering example of the mockumentary genre, blending satire with a realistic portrayal of the excesses and absurdities of the rock-and-roll lifestyle.
  • The film is noted for its improvisational style, as much of the dialogue was unscripted, with actors playing off each other naturally.
  • It has since gained cult status, influencing not just music documentaries but also TV shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation.
  • The film’s satirical take on fame, ego, and failure is timeless, resonating across generations of viewers.

Beyond its humor, This Is Spinal Tap has been embraced by musicians for its accurate portrayal of the quirks of the music industry, earning it a unique place in both film and rock history.
