Ancient spirits of evil, transform this decayed form! Few villains in cartoon history have an entrance as iconic as Mumm-Ra, and even fewer are as unsettling in their quieter moments as the frail, bandaged figure shuffling around his Black Pyramid, scheming over his cauldron. I have always been fascinated by Mumm-Ra’s old man form. There’s something so compelling about the idea that this withered, hunched creature is the same all-powerful evil that gives the ThunderCats so much trouble. The original LJN toy line gave us the decayed form way back in the ’80s, but let’s be honest, toy engineering has come a long way since then, and this character deserves a modern take that really captures all that creepy detail. Super7 has been doing wonderful work with their ThunderCats line, and seeing them tackle Mumm-Ra in his decrepit state as a deluxe release is just so exciting. The sculpt on this figure is gorgeous, with individually wrapped bandages that give him all that wonderful texture you want to see at this scale. That evil grin headsculpt is perfectly sinister, exactly the kind of expression you picture when he’s hunched over the cauldron calling on the Ancient Spirits. The soft goods cape with sewn-in wire hems is a really nice touch here. It lets you get that draped, flowing look when he’s standing on the shelf, but you can also pose it billowing out dramatically. He comes with two claw hands and that wicked alternate expression, so there’s plenty to play with when setting up your display. So let’s take a look at the Super7 ThunderCats Deluxe Old Man Mumm-Ra in hand review! We want to give a huge thanks to Big Bad Toy Store for sending us this Super7 ThunderCats Deluxe Old Man Mumm-Ra for review, and if he has been on your must have list, you can still grab him now at Big Bad Toy Store.

Packaging
The packaging features the classic ThunderCats logo in its iconic chrome and red lettering across the top of the black card. The insert art behind the blister uses the classic white, ink-splatter effect which is a wonderful homage to the vintage LJN cardbacks and fits the character’s dark mystique well.

The back of the card showcases a gorgeous vintage-style illustration featuring Lion-O front and center hoisting the Sword of Omens overhead, flanked by the full ThunderCats crew including Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, and Snarf, with Mumm-Ra and his snarling cat form looming on either side. I like the way this artwork captures that classic 1980s hand-painted look, with rich warm tones on the heroes contrasting against the cold greens and grays used for the villains.

Figure Details
Wrapped in sculpted bandages from torso to legs, Mumm-Ra’s pale blue skin peeks through where the wrappings gap, with individually sculpted toes and clawed fingers adding a nice level of detail to the old man form. The soft goods cape has a bright reddish orange exterior with a dark navy lining. Mumm-Ra’s wired cape is really earning its keep here, spread wide with the reddish orange hood pulled up over his head while the dark navy interior fans out on both sides. The bandaged body and pale blue skin read well from this full-figure view, and those splayed claw hands complete the menacing look nicely.

A close-up reveals the sculpt on Mumm-Ra’s face in great detail, with sunken cheeks, a furrowed brow, and a mouth full of jagged, uneven teeth framed by that signature evil grin. His red eyes have a glossy finish that contrasts nicely against the matte pale blue of his skin.

The rear view shows Mumm-Ra’s soft goods cape covering the full length of the figure, with the bright reddish orange exterior draping naturally and the hood gathered to a neat point at the top. The stitching along the hem and edges looks clean, and the fabric has enough body to hold its shape without looking stiff.

Without the cape, Mumm-Ra’s bandage work gets a clearer read here, with the sculpted wraps layering over his torso and waist in overlapping strips that leave patches of pale blue skin exposed at the joints. His splayed claw hands and bare, three-toed feet add a creepy, inhuman quality to the figure’s proportions.

From this side profile without the cape, the loose bandage strips hanging from Mumm-Ra’s head and back have a nice sense of movement to them, with the sculpted ends tapering to thin, wispy points. I like how the wraps thin out around the legs, letting more of that pale blue skin come through at the knees and shins.

From the back without the cape, the loose bandage strips hanging from Mumm-Ra’s waist are a nice touch, with several sculpted strands draping and curling naturally over the lower back and hips. The pale blue sandal-like sculpt on his feet carries through to the back, with the strapped detailing wrapping cleanly around each ankle.

The side profile without the cape gives a clean look at the bandage sculpt running down Mumm-Ra’s arm, with the wraps layering tightly around the bicep and forearm before giving way to his exposed pale blue clawed hand. A loose bandage strip trails from the back of his head, adding a bit of visual texture to an otherwise streamlined silhouette.

A close-up reveals Mumm-Ra’s pale blue skin has a slight glossy sheen across the forehead and cheeks, with dark shadowing sculpted deep into the eye sockets around those piercing red eyes. The bandage wraps framing his face hang loosely around the chin and neck, with the sculpted strips draping at different lengths to keep things from looking too symmetrical.

Two versions of Mumm-Ra’s old man form are posed side by side, with the previous Ultimates release on the left wearing the all red soft goods cape, and the new Deluxe version on the right sporting the navy and reddish orange cape. The new Deluxe figure is clearly a new body and face sculpt with improved articulation and a better stance. The Deluxe figure does not include any added accessories, where the Ultimates figure came with multiple accessories. The Ulitmates figure stand with his leg splayed out and carries his twisted black staff topped with a horned demon skull accented in red, along with a gold dagger, neither of which come with the Deluxe release. You will also notice that the Deluxe figure on the right has very white colored bandages where the Ultimates original release has much more tan colored bandages with a light worn looking wash.

From the rear, the difference in cape color between the two figures is striking, with the Deluxe release wrapped in a bright reddish orange cape, and the earlier Ultimates version draped in a deeper, richer red colored cape. The Ultimates figure’s twisted black staff with its horned demon skull tops rises above the red hood, while the Deluxe version shows just a hint of pale blue claw hand peeking out from beneath the orange fabric.

Old Man Mumm-Ra
This is a Deluxe version of Old Man Mumm-Ra. From an initial look, he looks to be the same as the Ultimates version, but with no accessories. But if I’m not mistaken, the first version was based on the Mattel ThunderCats Classics sculpt, so perhaps this might be an all new sculpt! Maybe if we get these two in hand side by side, we will be able to tell the difference.

ThunderCats Deluxe Wave 4
ThunderCats Deluxe Wave 4 is on display with Ghost Jaga, Mirror Lion-O, and Old Man Mumm-Ra, and I’ve got to say, seeing them all lined up like this is a real treat. Ghost Jaga appears in that translucent blue plastic with cape flowing behind him, Mirror Lion-O pops in red with his sword and golden claw accessory, and Old Man Mumm-Ra stands cloaked in red with his gaunt, wrapped look fully on display, giving us a strong in-person look at how this wave comes together.

Old Man Mumm-Ra is shown wrapped head to toe in layered white bandages, with loose strips hanging down across his torso and legs, and I really like how those sculpted wraps add depth all the way around. The bright orange hooded cape drapes over his shoulders with a dark interior lining, framing that grinning blue face as his arms stretch forward with open hands.

Ghost Jaga is shown here in translucent blue plastic, and I love how that semi clear finish lets the light pass through his torso and limbs. The white beard and helmet details sit sharply against the blue, with the ThunderCats emblem on his chest standing out in red, and he grips a pale sword while the soft cape fans out behind him.

Mirror Lion-O is decked out in deep red from head to toe, with that wild red hair sculpt flaring out around his face and giving him a fierce expression. He holds the Sword of Omens straight out in front of him with the ThunderCats emblem centered on the hilt, while the golden claw accessory is raised high, and I’ve got to say, that bold color swap really jumps off the shelf.
