I am so pleased to finally have the Red Cyclone himself standing on my desk. Zangief has always been one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, and honestly, he’s one of those picks that says a lot about a player. If you chose Zangief, you weren’t looking for easy wins. You were looking to get in close, read your opponent, and land that Spinning Piledriver for maximum satisfaction. There’s a boldness to maining Zangief, and I’ve always respected that about the character and the people who play him. Jada Toys has been doing wonderful things with their Ultra Street Fighter II line, and getting Zangief in this Deluxe Version feels like a real event. He’s such a physically distinct character in the roster, with that massive frame, the mohawk, the chest hair, the scars. Translating all of that into a 1/12 scale figure that still moves well is no small feat, and I was so curious to see how Jada handled it. This Deluxe Version comes loaded with goodies, too. We’re getting an alternate head sculpt, three sets of interchangeable hands, and that green Banishing Flat hand with its own flame effect piece, which is such a fun inclusion. If you know, you know. That move has been catching people off guard since Street Fighter II, and being able to recreate it on the shelf is just wonderful. And of course, the packaging deserves a mention. Jada has been using those arcade machine-style boxes across this line, and they continue to be some of the most charming collector packaging out there. Whether you’re an in-box or out-of-box collector, there’s something here for you. So let’s take a look at this Jada Toys Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief in hand review! We want to give a huge thanks to Big Bad Toy Store for sending us this Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief for review, and if he has been on your must have list, you can still grab him now at Big Bad Toy Store.

Packaging

The packaging on Zangief is a real love letter to the arcade era, designed to look like a classic arcade cabinet complete with a health bar across the top, score counters for 1P and 2P, and a row of colorful buttons along the lower panel. The bottom section features hand-drawn artwork of Zangief in profile alongside the game’s title treatment, all set against a blue and black splattered backdrop that feels pulled straight from a ’90s arcade marquee.

The back of the box features a large illustrated Zangief front and center, complete with his mohawk, thick beard, red trunks, studded belt, and red wrestling boots, all set against that same blue and black splatter motif. Along the bottom, a character select grid shows off the full roster in pixel-art style portraits, with one slot marked by a question mark teasing an unrevealed fighter.

The opposite side panel features Vega and M. Bison in that same moody red and black treatment, with Vega’s claw and mask looking especially sharp alongside Bison’s menacing grin peering down from above. You can see Zangief through the window portion of the box here, giving you a nice peek at the figure and some of his accessories still nestled in the tray.

The side panel artwork features Cammy and Ryu rendered in a moody red and black color palette, with Cammy’s signature beret and braid sitting just above Ryu’s intense stare and torn gi. It’s a nice departure from the blue splatter motif on the front and back, giving the box a different visual energy depending on which side you’re looking at.

Here’s a closer look at Zangief still nestled in his tray, and the accessories packed alongside him are worth noting. An alternate screaming head sculpt sits to the right, along with a pair of oversized swap hands, a green Banishing Flat hand, and a flame effect piece in orange and yellow that clips onto it for recreating his signature move.

Figure Details

Zangief’s chest hair is sculpted as a thick, spiky tuft that fans outward across his torso, and the texture on it is surprisingly sharp with individually defined clumps. His red trunks and matching lace-up wrestling boots are tied together by a studded gold belt and gold-trimmed red wristbands, with small scar details scattered across his legs adding some subtle character to the bare skin.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 6

From the side, you can see how Zangief’s mohawk has a really nice ridged texture with individually sculpted hair lines running front to back, and the brown beard juts out with a pointed, angular shape that captures his classic look. The gold wristbands and belt pop against the red trunks from this profile, and those red boots feature a slightly different shade that separates them from the rest of his gear.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 7

From this side profile, you get a great look at the red scar marks sculpted into Zangief’s upper back and shoulder area, with each one carved in as a distinct X-shaped slash rather than just a surface detail. The hairy ankles just above his boots are a fun little touch I hadn’t noticed until now, with small sculpted tufts of brown hair peeking out right where the gold-trimmed ankle guards sit.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 9

Here’s a closer look at Zangief’s back, and the sculpt work here is genuinely impressive, with deep grooves tracing the spine and layered contours wrapping around the shoulder blades and lower back. The studded gold belt features small silver rivets that pop against the red trunks, and you can see how the red ankle guards carry the same gold trim detail as the wristbands, tying the whole color scheme together from top to bottom.

Zangief’s oversized grappling hands are swapped in here, and the spread fingers with their thick, meaty sculpting really sell the scale of those enormous palms compared to the standard fists. Something I appreciate here is how well the alternate screaming head works with this particular pose, the combination of open hands and that furious expression capturing the raw intensity of a Spinning Piledriver windup.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 19

Zangief’s alternate screaming head is in full effect here, and paired with both fists raised overhead, the fury in that face sculpt really comes alive with the brow pushed down so hard it almost swallows his eyes. I like how the chest hair tuft looks from this straight-on angle, where the starburst shape mirrors the explosive energy of the pose itself, creating a visual focal point right at the center of the figure.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 21

Zangief is captured mid-kick here, and the articulation handles the extreme pose remarkably well, with the leg extending out at full height without any joints looking strained or unnatural. You can see how the red star detail on his upper thigh stays cleanly positioned even with the leg fully extended, and the white sole of his boot adds a small but satisfying color break you don’t normally notice when he’s standing flat.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 18

Zangief’s screaming head sculpt is on display here, and from this lower vantage you really get a sense of how the open mouth creates a deep cavity with the tongue curling upward against the roof, adding genuine volume to the expression. I noticed that the red war paint stripes wrapping around his thighs have a slightly curved taper at their ends, almost like claw marks, a detail that’s easy to miss when you’re focused on everything happening above the waist.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 22

Zangief is posed with both fists drawn tight to his chest here, and the yellow and red color blocking on his wristbands creates a strong horizontal line that frames the chest hair tuft perfectly between them. I like how the red boots with their white soles give him a surprisingly sporty look from the ground up, almost playful against the otherwise brutal aesthetic of scars and war paint covering the rest of him.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 24

The flame effect piece is a translucent yellow-green sculpt with orange tips that clips snugly around Zangief’s green Banishing Flat hand, and the swirling, layered texture of the flames gives it a convincing sense of energy radiating outward. I’m really digging how the translucent plastic shifts from a deep green at the core to bright orange at the outer edges, creating a gradient that sells the motion of the attack.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 15

Zangief’s alternate screaming head sculpt is swapped in here, and the wide-open mouth with fully sculpted teeth and tongue gives it a completely different energy from the standard head. The translucent green Banishing Flat hand has a smooth, almost jelly-like finish that contrasts sharply against the matte skin tones of the rest of the figure.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 17

I like how the overall proportions on this figure really sell his sheer mass, with those enormous shoulders and arms dwarfing his waist in a way that stays true to his exaggerated in-game silhouette.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 16

Zangief is posed low and aggressive here, fists clenched, and the sheer width of his frame really hits you from this angle with those massive shoulders practically eclipsing everything behind them. I noticed that the dark brown body hair on his shins has a slightly different sculpted texture than what’s on his ankles, with shorter, flatter tufts that hug closer to the skin surface.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 20

Zangief is posed low and compressed here with both fists drawn together, and the sheer sense of forward momentum in this setup really lets you appreciate how the proportions of his upper body completely overwhelm the compact waist and legs below. I noticed the red star on his outer thigh has a crisp five-pointed shape with no softening at the edges, a small detail that holds up nicely even at this close distance.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 23

A close-up reveals just how much personality is packed into Zangief’s face sculpt, from the deeply furrowed brow and narrowed eyes to the slightly parted mouth showing a hint of teeth beneath that thick, angular beard. I like how the mohawk reads as a compact, flat-topped cylinder at this distance, with the brown color matching the beard perfectly and contrasting against the shaved head surrounding it. Also here’s a closer look at that sculpted chest hair, and up close you really appreciate how each clump fans out in a starburst pattern with sharp, tapered tips that give the tuft real dimensional depth. I like how the warm flesh tones carry subtle pink shading around the collarbone and shoulders, adding some naturalistic warmth to the skin that contrasts nicely against the dark brown of the beard and chest hair.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 11

A close-up reveals the red and yellow wristband sculpted with clean, raised borders separating each color stripe, giving it a layered, almost rubber-like appearance. The red war paint stripes on Zangief’s upper arm and forearm are thin, deliberate marks that follow the contour of the skin, and I like how they mirror each other on both sides of the arm.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 13

The red scar marks on Zangief’s arm are worth lingering on here, with each X-shaped slash carved into the sculpt as a recessed groove rather than sitting flat on the surface. The yellow and red wristband has a satisfying thickness to it, and I noticed that the scars continue down onto the back of the hand, keeping the detail consistent even on the swappable fists.

Ultra Street Fighter II Zangief IH 14

You can see how the scar details on Zangief’s thighs are deeper and more varied from this rear view, with a mix of slash marks and X-shaped cuts that differ from the ones on his upper body. The white lacing on those red boots is sculpted with a raised, crisscross pattern that gives them a convincing textile quality, and the brown fur tufts just above the gold ankle bands have a rougher, more wild texture compared to the groomed chest hair up top.
