Battle for Subternia MOTU Origins 4-Pack Hi-Res Packaging Artwork Revealed

What started as early information about a mysterious Masters of the Universe Origins 4-Pack back in December 2025 has come full circle with the reveal of the high-resolution packaging artwork for Battle for Subternia! We’ve followed this set from the first look at the figures through the official preorder announcement, and now we get to appreciate the illustrations behind this unusual release.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t particularly interested in this 4-pack when it was first revealed, but I absolutely love the artwork. And while the figures themselves didn’t do much for me, I appreciate what Mattel is doing here. Giving collectors new characters to build out their MOTU Origins displays is a great way to expand the line beyond the familiar faces we’ve been collecting for years.

The Battle for Subternia 4-Pack introduces four characters representing different factions of Eternia: Avion Warrior, Primal Captain, Aquatican Mer-Warrior, and Sepult-Ro Disciple. Each has ties to established MOTU characters, including Stratos, Beast Man, Mer-Man, and Scare Glow.

A big thanks to Art Director and Package Designer @brucemode and Artist @aprostudio_ for sharing these incredible illustrations and giving us a closer look at the artwork created for this release.

Battle for Subternia 4-Pack Packaging Artwork

The Battle for Subternia packaging brings together all four warriors in a massive underground confrontation. The Avion Warrior swoops into the cavern with his red feathered wings extended, while the Primal Captain charges forward with his club. The Aquatican Mer-Warrior emerges from the rocky terrain carrying his golden trident, and the Sepult-Ro Disciple commands the opposite side of the battlefield with his glowing green staff. The deep blues, purples, and green lighting create a fantastic subterranean setting, while the window box keeps all four figures and their accessories on display.

The Four Warriors of Subternia

Avion Warrior

The Avion Warrior represents Stratos and the kingdom of Avion. His character illustration features a gray body, blue tunic with white trim, red boots, and a distinctive red helmet with blue goggles. The red feathered wings extending from his arms immediately connect him to the Avion faction, while his golden staff gives him a unique weapon compared to Stratos. Several additional Avion Warriors fly through the clouds in the background, giving collectors another group of characters to display alongside Stratos.

Sepult-Ro Disciple

The Sepult-Ro Disciple expands the skeletal side of Eternia with a design that would fit right alongside Scare Glow. His purple hood and flowing cloak frame an exposed skull, while the skeletal arms and legs contrast with the layered purple armor around his waist and shins. The double-ended staff is surrounded by green supernatural energy, and the jagged cavern formations and swirling purple mist make this one of the more striking individual illustrations from the set. The combination of skeletal features and purple armor works particularly well with Scare Glow’s established design.

Aquatican Mer-Warrior

The Aquatican Mer-Warrior expands the underwater faction associated with Mer-Man, bringing another fish-like warrior into the Origins universe. His bright turquoise body, orange eyes, sharp teeth, and finned head give him a distinctive appearance, while the yellow harness and waist details complement his golden trident. The illustration places him beneath the water’s surface, surrounded by coral, aquatic plants, and a jellyfish drifting overhead. He’s another character that would look right at home alongside Mer-Man and the other aquatic creatures of Eternia.

Primal Captain

The Primal Captain represents the beastly warriors associated with Beast Man, and his orange fur, pale facial markings, pointed ears, and snarling expression immediately recall the familiar character. The armor and weapons help distinguish him, including a large wooden club and round armored shoulder guard with riveted detailing. He also wears a fur loincloth and wrist guards, while the jungle setting features twisted trees and a reddish sun. The Primal Captain is another example of how Mattel can introduce new characters that fit into existing MOTU factions without simply producing another version of Beast Man.

A Closer Look at the Battle for Subternia Artwork

There’s quite a bit happening in the skies above Subternia, including what appears to be Hawke, Stratos’ younger sister, fighting a Skelcon. The Avion warrior is armed with a short blade, while the Skelcon lunges forward with its claws extended. The creature’s horned skull, enormous purple bat wings, and muscular blue body are particularly interesting, especially since the Skelcons were recently teased on Laser Light Skeletor’s packaging artwork. Between that tease and their appearance here, I’d love to see Mattel bring these characters into Origins.

Another Skelcon flies through the caverns carrying a long spear tipped with a purple blade. This angle provides a closer look at its wings, which extend well beyond its body, along with the dark fur around its neck and waist. The creature’s skeletal face and pointed horns are an interesting contrast to its otherwise muscular appearance. There’s certainly room for characters like these in Origins, especially for collectors looking to expand Skeletor’s forces beyond the predictable henchman we already have.

Scare Glow makes an appearance in the lower corner of the cavern artwork, holding his staff as he watches the battle unfold. His glowing green skull, red eyes, exposed skeletal torso, and flowing purple cloak stand out against the blue-green lighting of Subternia. It’s great to see Scare Glow included in the artwork, especially with the Sepult-Ro Disciples joining the Origins line.

One of the Aquatican Mer-Warriors is having a rough time in the underground waterways, struggling to pull himself onto a rocky ledge. Above him, the foot of a skeletal warrior rests near the edge, suggesting he may have been knocked into the water during the battle. A large pink tentacle covered in spikes rises from the pool nearby, adding another danger for anyone unfortunate enough to end up beneath the surface.

That pink tentacle belongs to an enormous aquatic creature lurking in the depths of Subternia. Its rounded head, large black eyes, and green spines give it a strange appearance, while several long tentacles twist through the water around it. The creature is partially submerged, making it difficult to tell just how large it might be. It’s one of the more unusual designs tucked into the artwork, and I’d be curious to know whether it was created specifically for Battle for Subternia or inspired by an existing MOTU creature.

The Sepult-Ro Disciple swings his double-ended staff as green energy erupts from both ends, lighting up the surrounding cavern. His tattered cloak spreads behind him, while the rocky ground beneath his feet is illuminated by the supernatural energy. There’s another confrontation happening in the background, where an Aquatican Mer-Warrior clashes with a skeletal opponent. I particularly like how the artwork gives the Sepult-Ro Disciple a more active role in the battle rather than simply having him standing alongside the other warriors.

The Aquatican Mer-Warrior crouches on a rocky outcropping with his golden trident planted beside him, surrounded by the underground waters of Subternia. Another Aquatican warrior fights a skeletal opponent in the background, with both characters armed with long weapons. The underwater faction is particularly well represented throughout the artwork, appearing in several different areas of the cavern. For collectors who already have Mer-Man, adding a few of these warriors would make for a pretty interesting underwater display.

The Primal Captain raises his club against an approaching Avion Warrior, who swoops toward him with his red feathered wings extended. Another beastly warrior prepares to leap into the fight from the rocks above, while additional combatants can be spotted farther back in the cavern. An Aquatican Mer-Warrior is partially submerged in the water below, seemingly trying to avoid the fighting overhead. This section of the artwork has some of the most interesting interactions between the different factions, particularly with the airborne Avion Warriors taking on the Primal Captains.

The complete panoramic illustration brings together the enormous underground battlefield, with Avion Warriors and Skelcons fighting through the air, Primal Captains battling across the rocky passages, and Aquatican Mer-Warriors emerging from the underground waterways. The Sepult-Ro Disciples occupy the opposite side of the cavern, while Scare Glow watches from the lower corner. There’s even an enormous pink aquatic creature lurking beneath the surface, surrounded by glowing green crystals and towering rock formations.

And this is where I think Mattel still has plenty of opportunities with MOTU Origins. Even with the vintage lineup considered complete, there’s an enormous universe of characters that could still be explored. The Skelcons are a perfect example, and Battle for Subternia demonstrates how new characters can expand our collections without simply revisiting figures we already own.
