What Defines a Titan Class Transformer?
Introduced by Hasbro as part of their Transformers toy line, the Titan Class figures are not only the largest and most intricate Transformers toys available, they are massive figures that definitely make a statement in your collection. The Titan Class designation is reserved for Transformers that are typically over 20 inches tall in their robot form, making them some of the most massive figures in the franchise. These Transformers are often city-sized, representing the scale and grandeur that makes them unique in the Transformers lore. Titan Class figures are not only notable for their immense size but also for their complex transformations, detailed designs, and often, their multiple modes.

Metroplex
Released in 2013, stands over 2 feet tall and includes various features like electronic lights and sounds, a rotating blaster cannon, and numerous connection points for other smaller Transformers figures.Metroplex is one of the most iconic Titan Class Transformers. He made his debut in the Generation 1 (G1) series as the Autobots’ city-sized warrior. Metroplex can transform into three distinct modes: a massive robot, a mobile battle station, and a sprawling city. His city mode is designed to house smaller Transformers, making him a pivotal character in both defensive and offensive strategies in the lore. The most vast and mighty Autobot ever created, Metroplex is a member of a race long thought of as nothing more than legend.

Here is Metroplex in his alternate city and battle station modes.

Fortress Maximus
The 2016 Titan Class Fortress Maximus toy stands over 24 inches tall and features a dual Headmaster gimmick, where both the head and the smaller robot companion can transform into individual figures. Another legendary Titan Class figure, Fortress Maximus, debuted in the Headmasters series as an Autobot city-bot and the protector of the planet Nebulos. Like Metroplex, Fortress Maximus has three modes: a robot, a battle station, and a city. In his city mode, he serves as a headquarters for the Autobots, complete with numerous compartments and docking areas for smaller Transformers.

Here is Fortress Maximus in his battle station and city modes.

Omega Supreme
The 2019 Titan Class Omega Supreme toy stands at around 24 inches tall in robot mode and includes a transforming rocket that becomes part of his base mode, as well as an articulated tank that can traverse his rocket base. Omega Supreme is a Titan Class Autobot introduced in the G1 series as a powerful guardian and protector of Autobot headquarters. Omega Supreme transforms into a giant robot, a rocket base, and a tank. His rocket base mode is often depicted as the final line of defense for the Autobots, and his tank mode is designed for heavy combat. This colossal 2-foot scale Titan Class WFC-S29 Omega Supreme figure features a G1-inspired design and converts to Autobot Command Center mode, made up of a tank, rocket, control tower, and defense perimeter. The included Micromaster, Autobot Countdown, fits inside rocket, tank, and control tower, and can ride along the defense perimeter. Includes 6 Fire Blasts accessories to simulate battle effects on figure and Command Center mode.

Trypticon
The 2017 Titan Class Trypticon toy is over 20 inches tall in dinosaur mode and includes features such as a launching ramp, a storage area for smaller figures, and the ability to “eat” and store smaller Transformers in his stomach compartment. Trypticon is the Decepticon counterpart to Metroplex. Introduced in the G1 series, Trypticon is a massive, dinosaur-like Transformer who serves as a mobile Decepticon stronghold. Trypticon transforms into a fearsome robotic dinosaur, a battle station, and a city that can interact with other Decepticon figures. His dinosaur mode is particularly iconic, featuring immense strength and destructive power.

Here is Tripticon in Battle Station mode.

Scorponok
The 2020 Titan Class Scorponok toy stands at over 21 inches tall in robot mode. It features a Headmaster gimmick, where his head transforms into a smaller robot called Lord Zarak, who also serves as the pilot for the larger Scorponok. Scorponok is another legendary Decepticon Titan, introduced in the G1 series as a scorpion-like robot and the leader of the Decepticons on Nebulos.

Scorponok has three modes: a giant robot, a scorpion, and a city or fortress. His scorpion mode highlights his role as a menacing and powerful Decepticon leader, while his city mode serves as a base of operations.

Devastator
The 2015 Titan Class Devastator toy stands at 18 inches tall, making him one of the tallest combiners ever made. Each of the six Constructicons is fully transformable, and they combine to form Devastator, who is highly articulated and detailed. Devastator is unique among the Titan Class figures as a combiner, formed from the union of six individual Constructicons: Scrapper, Hook, Bonecrusher, Long Haul, Mixmaster, and Scavenger. Devastator was introduced in the G1 series as the first combiner and remains one of the most popular.

Devastator’s Titan Class form is a massive robot formed from the six Constructicons, each of whom can transform into construction vehicles. While he doesn’t have a separate city or base mode, his immense size and combined power make him a Titan.

GI Joe Transformers Titan Class Crossover Speculation
Now that we know what is coming, let’s do what we do best and speculate about the possibilities! We’ve cooked up four combinations, which include two crossovers for the Decepticons/Cobra and two crossovers for the Autobots/GI Joe.
Night Raven / Skywarp
One of the larger vehicles in the Cobra arsenal was the Night Raven. The Night Raven became a fan favorite due to its impressive size, intricate details, and the connection to the real-world Blackbird. It remains one of the most sought-after G.I. Joe vehicles among collectors, especially when found in good condition with all parts intact.

The Night Raven is one of the most iconic vehicles in the G.I. Joe universe, introduced in 1986 as part of the “A Real American Hero” toy line. The Night Raven toy was a large and detailed vehicle, reflecting the sophistication of the Cobra forces. The jet had a distinctive black color scheme, emphasizing its stealth capabilities. The cockpit of the Night Raven was unique as it operated like an elevator, bringing the pilot and copilot seats to the ground for easy access. A unique feature of the Night Raven was its detachable drone that could be launched from the back of the plane. It also featured working landing gear and a bomb bay the lowered to reveal the ordinance.

In the G.I. Joe animated series and comics, the Night Raven was depicted as a fast and nearly invisible jet used by Cobra for high-speed attacks, reconnaissance missions, and to evade G.I. Joe forces. It was piloted the Strato-Vipers, who were trained to handle the advanced technology and extreme speeds of the Night Raven.

Skywarp was one of the original Decepticons released in the first wave of Transformers toys in 1984. He was part of the “Seekers,” a subgroup of Decepticon jets that shared the same basic mold but had different color schemes and character traits. The other two Seekers were Starscream and Thundercracker. He transformed from a black and purple F-15 Eagle jet into a robot. It was known for its relatively simple but effective transformation, typical of early G1 figures. The jet mode was well-detailed, with working landing gear and removable missiles. The robot mode was characterized by its winged appearance, with the jet’s wings and nosecone prominently featured.

Hydrofoil / Shockwave
Another great contender for a Titan Class combination is the iconic Cobra Moray Hydrofoil coupled with the robot for of the G1 Shockwave.

The Cobra Moray Hydrofoil was designed as a high-speed attack boat for Cobra, reflecting the military hardware aesthetics of the 1980s. The hydrofoil design allowed it to skim the surface of the water, reducing drag and increasing speed. The Moray was heavily armed, featuring a variety of weaponry, including a turret-mounted cannon, missile launchers, torpedoes, and depth charges. The Moray included numerous small parts which were easily broken or misplaced, including a searchlight, 2 windshields, 2 side missiles, steering wheel, 2 seats, 2 storage covers, four m-30 machine guns, four depth charges and 4 missiles. The Moray could accommodate multiple Cobra action figures, with space for a pilot in the cockpit and additional figures in the turret and on the deck. The cockpit was enclosed with a transparent, tinted canopy, adding to the sleek, futuristic look of the vehicle.

The art on the front of the Hydrofoil box depicts Lamprey at the helm with Dreadnok Buzzer manning the search light with Dreadnok Torch manning the machine gun and the Baroness and Storm Shadow manning the depth charges. Finally, we have Destro manning the turret and it would be amazing to see those iconic figures packed in with this large vehicle. We already have the Baroness that came packed with the Megatron HISS Tank and Storm Shadow released with Snake Eyes as a two-pack so that leaves Lamprey, Buzzer, Torch, and Destro!

Shockwave transforms into a futuristic, space-themed laser gun, distinguishing him from many other Transformers who transformed into more conventional vehicles. The gun mode was large, with electronic light and sound features, activated by pulling the trigger. The toy’s barrel would light up, and a sound effect would play when the trigger was pulled. In robot mode, Shockwave is notable for his cyclopean head, which features a single, glowing eye. His right arm is a laser cannon, further emphasizing his association with high-tech weaponry.

Rolling Thunder / Ultra Magnus
The Rolling Thunder measures over 3 feet long, making this a perfect candidate for a Titan Class GI Joe Transformers crossover! Ultra Magnus feels he is a soldier and nothing more. He very much prefers taking orders to giving them, and even avoids opportunities for higher responsibility. They would make a perfect paining as there has been a rumor that an Optimus Prime MOBAT is a future release!

The Rolling Thunder was first released boxed in U.S. toy stores in 1988 and included the driver, Armadillo. The Rolling Thunder was designed during a period when G.I. Joe vehicles were becoming increasingly elaborate and heavily armed. The design team at Hasbro sought to create a vehicle that was not just a transport or combat vehicle but a mobile missile platform. The vehicle’s most distinctive feature is its two large, retractable missile launchers, each capable of firing a massive ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) toy.

There are a plethora of Joes on the box art for the Rolling Thunder, which include vehicle driver Armadillo, Spearhead, Shockwave, Hardball, Lightfoot, and Repeater.

Ultra Magnus was introduced in 1986 as part of the third wave of Transformers toys, during a period of significant expansion in the Transformers universe. This coincided with the release of “The Transformers: The Movie,” where Ultra Magnus played a major role. The G1 Ultra Magnus toy consisted of a white cab that transformed into a robot identical to Optimus Prime in shape and design, and a large trailer that transformed into a battle station or combined with the cab to form Ultra Magnus’s larger “super robot” mode. .

Skystriker / Jetfire
That Skytriker and Jetfire would make a perfect pairing and this is not the first time this duo has been mashed together! In 2013, the pair was a San Diego Comic Con exclusive but was a non-transforming figure that outfitted the Skystriker with Jetfire’s deco and jetpack.

Vintage Skystriker and Cartoon Appearance
The Skystrikers appear in the very first episode of the Sunbow GI Joe Cartoon and, according to Joepedia, “When we first see Skystrikers, they are just a recent addition to the G.I. Joe arsenal. They were fresh from flight testing when Cobra made an assault attempt on the G.I. Joe base. Several Skystrikers were destroyed in the process but Duke and Scarlett were able to commandeer one and caused Cobra to retreat. At the Ring of Fire, Duke and Ace led a squadron of Skystrikers in keeping Cobra from taking the final M.A.S.S. catalyst. Skystrikers came in to make one of the final push against the uphill battle over Cobra’s defenses at the mountain that holds the Cobra Temple. When equipped with a detachable rocket propulsion module mounted between the vertical tails, the Skystrikers were also capable of orbital spaceflight. Though able to reach space under their own power in this manner, launch aboard a large, expendable booster rocket was also an option. Using this method, several Skystrikers could be orbited simultaneously, mounted around the perimeter of the booster’s upper stage. This way, a small squadron of them could be sent up to take on larger targets, such as Cobra manned space stations.”

On the vintage box, it featured an amazing Skystriker illustration set off by the classic GI Joe burst. If you notice, there is a copilot and a real-life Tomcat has two crew members, a pilot and a RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). But as shown in the cartoons, it’s often operated by one person with the second seat empty. The RIO on the box is none other than Lt. Wayne Ruthel, who they finally made into an action figure in the HasLab version! The back of the box features a black and white schematic outlining the features of the toy.

There were no other figures illustrated on the front of the box so is there where we can finally get Ketchup and Mustard from the Skystriker HasLab? This would be the perfect opportunity to add the to the line and give them a second change!

The Combat Jet Skystriker [XP-14F] was first released in the U.S. in 1983 and included the pilot, Ace. It was was also sold in 1984 and 1985, then was discontinued in 1986. The Skystriker XP-14F was modeled after the real-world Grumman F-14 Tomcat, a supersonic, twin-engine, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft used by the U.S. Navy. There were several features that made this jet iconic and beloved by collectors. One of the standout features of the Skystriker toy was its working variable-sweep wings. Just like the real F-14 Tomcat, the wings could be moved forward for lower speeds or swept back for supersonic flight, controlled by a lever on the top of the fuselage. The Skystriker featured a two-seat cockpit, which included pilot figure, Ace. Heavily armed with removable missiles that could be attached under the wings and fuselage, the armament added to the playability, allowing for various aerial combat scenarios. A unique feature of the Skystriker was the inclusion of two small parachutes. Finally, the Skystriker had retractable landing gear, adding to the realism of the vehicle and enhancing its display value when not in flight mode.

The G1 Jetfire toy was originally a part of the Japanese Macross franchise, which was known in the West as “Robotech.” The toy was specifically a representation of the VF-1S Super Valkyrie, a transforming fighter jet. In robot mode, Jetfire was tall and imposing, standing out due to its size and the striking design features carried over from the Macross VF-1S. The robot mode included many armor pieces and a large rifle.

SDCC 2013 Exclusive Transformers & G.I. Joe Jetfire Skystriker
The combination of the Skystriker and Jetfire is not new as, in 2013, a non-transforming GI Joe Transformers crossover was revealed! For many kids of the ’80s, G.I. Joe and Transformers were the ultimate duo of action figures. I was no exception, loving both toy lines equally.

Jetfire has always been one of my favorite Transformers and his toy was a childhood favorite, so seeing him represented in this SDCC exclusive set was fantastic. By using the base Skystriker with the added booster rockets from Jetfire, it transforms into an almost perfect Jetfire replica in jet mode.
