Check out our hands on review of the Hot Toys Captain Rex sixth scale figure from Star Wars The Clone Wars animated series!
Captain Rex in his Phase 2 armor is one of my favorite Clones and characters of all time! Clone Captain Rex served the Republic during the Clone Wars, often taking orders from Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano. He viewed military service as an honor, and he always completed his mission. Fond of using two blaster pistols at the same time, Rex customized his armor with distinctive blue markings. His loyalty to the Republic and his Jedi Generals was absolute, but even this dedicated veteran soldier found himself plagued by doubts as the Clone Wars claimed more lives and brought ruin to more worlds. This figure is based on the appearance of Clone Captain Rex in his distinctive Clone Trooper armor and helmet.
“It’s ironic. Clones wanted I used to believe that being a good soldier meant doing everything they told you. That’s how they engineered us. But we’re not droids. We’re not programmed. You have to learn to make your own decisions. instead of numbers, yet now people are signing up to be given numbers.“

Rex once served the Republic on the frontlines during the Clone Wars, taking orders from Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano as first a captain and later a commander. He viewed military service as an honor, and his loyalty to the Republic and his Jedi Generals was absolute. But when Order 66 was executed, it was Ahsoka who helped to free Rex from the programming of his inhibitor chip. At the dawn of the Empire, Rex has escaped with his life but is considered killed-in-action in the eyes of the new regime. That allows him to operate in the shadows and help any clone brothers who remain separate from the Imperial ranks

Box and Art
The box front features Captain Rex in his favorite pose where he is holding his double blasters across his chest! The ribbon around the box shows his unhelmeted look holding the 332nd Company helmet, with its members informally known as Ahsoka’s Clone Troopers. The side of the box features Captain Rex running and gunning, of course, with his duel blasters!

Inside of Box and Packout
Inside of the box you will find a beautiful shot of Captain Rex mid flight with his macro binoculars down over his visor and his light attached to the side of his helmet. This overlay is covering the amazing packout that Captain Rex comes with!

Figure Details
The figure aesthetic and color scheme are fantastic! The armor, overall, also has a subtle green tint to it, which is accurate how the armor is portrayed in The Clone Wars animated series. This figure does Captain Rex a whole lot justice with respect to the sculpt of the armor, the paint application, and the articulation complete the total package so let’s take a look at the finer details!

The helmet features some weathering effects and has an articulated range finder, which is the first Hot Toys Clone to feature this mechanism. The visor is glossy, like the other Clone buckets and weld marks are very apparent on the face of the helmet and he has the tally marks all around his helmet.

The Pauldron is uniquely designed where you can place the magnetic ammo pouch on his right breast plate to the complete the look! The Pauldron is fixed so you won’t get some weird movement when you are posing the figure.

Captain Rex’s unhelmeted head sculpt features the likeness of Temuera Morrison, the actor who plays Boba Fett and who’s face was used to model all of the Clone Troopers likeness after. The hair is seamless painted on the head sculpt and looks like a very realistic buzz cut that is shaved close to the skull. The skin texture and paint application are beautifully executed. There is even a sculpted in Adam’s apple on the neck that is covered by the black space suit material.

The armor features some really amazing weld marks that have a blue tinge to them. The weld marks look very realistic as they are raised, mimicking a bead of welded steel that has an orange/chrome silver paint app over the top!

The armor on the right and left forearms feature the tally marks, and, the arm pieces also have the greenish tint to match the rest of the armor on the figure.

He comes with the standard Clone Trooper utility belt and his blaster holsters are attached by a piece that let’s them flow free and wiggle around. The material on his Kama is a light soft fabric with no creasing and features a dark blue piping on it.

The legs have an asymmetrical design with respect to the tally marks on the right and left legs but they both are equally as weathered. the green tint is more apparent as you move down the legs to the boots!

Accessories
Captain Rex comes with a plethora of accessories, which include:
- One pair of hands for holding a gun
- One relaxed left hand
- One opened right hand
- Three gesture hands
- A blaster rifle
- A magnetic black pouch
- Two blaster pistols
- An Ahsoka’s Clone Trooper helmet with orange-colored pattern and weathering effect
- One magnetically attachable jetpack with two real-like thruster fire accessories
- Specially designed desert-themed dynamic figure stand with Star Wars logo and character nameplate

The jetpack is a dark charcoal gray color with a ton of weathering and scratching to it. It also has dirt and grime in the crevices.

The rocket is removable and the jet pack comes with rocket effects that peg into the bottom of the thrusters.

The DC-15S Blaster Carbine, produced by BlasTech Industries, is a semi-automatic and rapid fire blaster which also has a stun feature. As well as a unique fully-foldable stalk. The blaster was used by Clone Troopers throughout the Clone Wars and became the more favored weapon amongst its more powerful counterpart, the DC-15A Blaster Rifle, due to its compact size and usefulness in close quarter engagements. The paint app to the blaster has a subtle dry brush of silver applied to it, which gives it some depth and dimension.

The DC-17 hand blaster was a model of heavy blaster pistol and the Grand Army of the Republic’s standard-issue sidearm. ARC troopers, as well as other special forces units like Clone Force 99 (aka The Dab Batch) within the Special Operations Brigade, used the DC-17 for close-quarters fighting and as a backup weapon. The weapon was one of the most reliable and toughest models of blaster pistols created, as well as having remarkable stopping power in its small design. These blasters have the same paint applications as the DC-15S Blaster Carbine and can be stored in his holsters.

The weapon was also well balanced, possessed a respectable rate of fire, and lightweight. Captain Rex, who served in the elite 501st Legion, preferred to use two DC-17s at once.

He also comes with a set of macro binoculars that are nicely painted and weathered to match the overall look of the figure. Hot Toys included a wedge tool that you can use to pop the ear pieces off, which reveal the holes on the side. There is also a light (or torch piece) that is also included for extra ways to display the figure! While you are putting the macro binoculars on, you can also place the torch on the left side of the helmet. The torch piece is keyed so it only fits in one way. If you don’t want to add the torch, you can simply pop the ear pieces back in and viola, the macro binoculars are secured in place. The cool thing about all of the pieces is that they all work together and the range finder is not impeded by the binoculars.

The 332nd Clone Trooper helmet (or bucket), which is a nod to division of the 501st Legion of the Galactic Republic, and was characterized by the distinctive helmet design of its troopers modeled after the markings on Ahsoka Tano’s face.

The figure base is the standard Star Wars style that features Imperial style flooring and is the same as Coruscant Guards and the 501st Clone Troopers. The display base features a Captain Rex metal name plate and since this figure has Captain Rex in flight, it comes with the dynamic flight pole to meet all of your posing needs!

With the multitude of attachments and accessories, you can put Captain Rex in as many different poses and display options.
