Back on February 1, 2025, we reported that a MOTU Origins Fright Zone was seen at German Toy Fair 2025, called Spielwarenmesse. Since then, we know that the MOTU Origins Fright Zone has been confirmed, including the latest news that a MOTU Origins playset listing was found in the HEO database. An anonymous source has seen the new Fright Zone Playset and it looks larger than the than the vintage version, which makes us think that it is not simply a recreation of the vintage original design, which leaves us to wonder what form the Fright Zone will it take. Will it be a modest recreation of the vintage playset we all know and love? Or will it be more than that? Could it be an extended playset that includes a Slime Pit? We are only speculating but the possibilities are mind blowing! We also received release information for the Fright Zone, which will put this iconic playset in the hands of collectors in October 2025. The MOTU Origins Fright Zone has been teased numerous times on MOTU Origins card and box art and, given that the Masters of the Universe is celebrating the 40th anniversary of She-Ra and the Princess of Power, a Fright Zone will make an amazing addition to the line as this would round out the major play sets for the Masters of the Universe Origins line! Since photos were not allowed at Spielwarenmesse, we don’t know what this new playset looks like. Thanks to friend, Mr. Home Arcade, we can imagine what an extended Fright Zone Playset might entail with his incredible custom concept he commissioned by the talented bombstaroutkast, shown below! So let’s explore the possibilities of an extended Fright Zone playset!

Thinking about what a larger Fright Zone might include is so exciting! Here you can see Mr.Home Arcade incoporated the Slime Pit on one end and the Fright Zone on the other, connected by stone levels and steps. This is a wonderful possibility!

A view of the Custom concept by Mr.Home Arcade without the figures so you can see it in all it’s glory!

We thought we were going to get a playset akin to Castle Grayskull or Snake Mountain but a little smaller. If you own the original vintage Fright Zone, it’s a modest sized playset, not large by any means. But looking at the possibilities Mr.Home Arcade’s extended Fright Zone get’s us so excited! Here are some photos and the history of the vintage Fright Zone to wet your appetite, which is from our very own Toy Sorceress.

Fright Zone Teases and History
The Fright Zone playset was released by Mattel in 1985. More of a diorama piece, the Fright Zone was a simple looking playset that consisted of that famous green colored craggily stone, a rustic dungeon door, a tunnel for a puppet snake to come thru and a scary looking tree complete with scarecrows. This playset was a huge departure for the vast environments that Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain brought, but I think it holds a special place in the hearts of Evil Horde fans. It didn’t resemble the techno-future location depicted in the Filmation cartoon at all, but it was still cool!

First illustrated on the 2020 Power Con exclusive She-Ra figure card back artwork, the Fright zone was featured on both the front and rear of the card back art. Shown below, you can see Hordak attacking Adora at the fright zone. It is also pictured on the front of the fold out artwork in stunning color showing Hordak’s minions Mantenna, Grizzlor and Catra atop Clawdeen her evil pink lion at the steps of the Fright Zone near the evil tree.

The Fright Zone shown for a second time on the Origins Hordak card back artwork. Again with a bevy of his minions by his side. This time a pair of Horde Trooper, Grizzlor, Leech, Mantenna and Modulock join him.

We see the Fright Zone for the third time featured center stage in all its 1980’s style glory on the 2021 Masters of the Universe Origins Power Con Exclusive Horde 4 Pack – lamp shade box, as I like to call it. This time depicted in stunning wrap around artwork by the great Axel Gimenez. In all 3 cases, your will notice that the Fright Zone is depicted as it was in 1985 Mattel playset release and not what the Filmation cartoon location looked like. Again, giving us a hint that perhaps Mattel in classic Origins style has its sights set for a Fright Zone Origins release?! Only time will tell…..

With the card back for Extendar, we can see a cool scene with Extendar fighting off the Evil Horde! Dragstor is finally teased as well as the Fright Zone so we can’t wait for more MOTU!
