GI Joe Mego Ninja Rivals Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow Review

Mego Corporation and Hasbro have teamed up together to bring you this legendary Ninja rivalry in classic 8″ Mego Action Figure Form! Introducing the GI Joe Mego X Ninja Rivals Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow 2-Pack!

Legendary Mego Corporation known for its vintage 8″ World’s Greatest Superhero line have teamed up with the creators of GI Joe from Hasbro to bring us this special edition Ninja rivalry action figure set with Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, complete with soft goods outfits and multiple vintage inspired accessories! When this set was first announced last July 2021, I was super excited and placed my pre-order on it right away. Not only are Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes my two favorite GI Joe characters, but I am an avid vintage Mego Collector! Photo of my modest vintage Mego collection is below. I have to say that in hand, I am surprisingly pleased how well this Mego X G.I. Joe Ninja Rivals Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow 2-Pack came out! The attention to detail, beautiful soft goods outfits, and classic weapons and accessories that were included make this set a must have for any Mego or GI Joe collector!

Features include:

  • Legendary Hasbro characters in a nostalgic, 8-inch-scale Mego style
  • Premium Hasbro attention to detail
  • Detailed helmet sculpt and paint hits honor the OG characters
  • Removeable, premium soft-goods ninja costume pieces with character-inspired detailing
  • Character-inspired weapon and gear accessories
  • Highly poseable for play or display… your way
  • Collectible packaging inspired by classic G.I. Joe cardbacks

You can see the classic design for each of the characters representing their 1980’s A Real American Hero design. These new Mego Figures are made on the new band-less Mego action figure bodies with 26 points of articulation. The figures have a much-improved joints that can stay in their posed positions! These band-less bodies should be long lasting and not suffer from the previous type of Mego’s that had rubber bands holding the main joints together that would deteriorate over time. These action figures are a perfect Mego interpretation of the vintage 3-3/4″ A Real American Hero O-Ring figures! Storm Shadow is wearing his classic white ninja outfit with the cut off sleeves, red Cobra logo, fabric wrapped wrists, and even a couple small pockets for his knife and real ninja stars in his waist! Here we also get Commando Snake Eyes in his all-black commando outfit, complete with his signature black visor, grenade chest strap, leg holsters for his side arm and knife, and even a red Arashikage logo on his shoulder! I absolutely love these figures, and the attention to detail on their outfits is just spectacular! Let’s take a deep dive closer look at each, shall we? But before we do that, it would be helpful to understand a little bit about the history Mego and how we got here.

Quick History of Mego

Mego action figures are a quintessential must have toy when it comes to collecting vintage action figures! Founded by David Abrams in 1954, Mego started out by selling cheap toys in dime stores. But in 1971, when Marty Abrams, David’s son joined the company, Mego started its journey into the history books of toys! Marty Abrams, who became President of Mego in 1971 after graduating college, totally changed the creative vision of the company and set them off in a whole new direction. Marty decided that he would buy the toy rights to movie characters, celebrities and comic book heroes; then create small action figures of them. The very first Mego Action figure to be released was Action Jackson. A whole line was developed for him, and then soon followed the most famous line of Mego Action Figures, The World Greatest Super Heroes! These are by far the most popular and sought after collectables of the entire run of Mego action figures! They included characters from both the DC and Marvel Universe, something you would never see in a toy line today. Characters like Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, The Joker, The Penguin and many more! My favorite was always Spiderman as I loved his pose-ability, perfect 8″ scale and super cute soft goods outfit, like pajamas with feet!

According to the Wikipedia:

The Mego Corporation is an American toy company that in its original iteration was first founded in 1954.[3] Originally known as a purveyor of dime store toys,[4] in 1971 the company shifted direction and became famous for producing licensed dolls (including the long-running “World’s Greatest Super Heroes” line), celebrity dolls, and the Micronauts toy line. For a time in the 1970s, their line of 8-inch-scale action figures with interchangeable bodies became the industry standard. In 1982 Mego filed for bankruptcy, and by 1983, the Mego Corporation ceased to exist;[5] today, Mego dolls and playsets can be highly prized collectibles, with some fetching hundreds, or even in some cases, thousands of dollars (depending on rarity) in the collectibles market.[6] In July 2018, the newly-reformed Mego Corporation announced they would be producing a limited run of their classic style clothed dolls in their traditional 1/9 scale, as well as some 1/5 figures sold exclusively through Target. These dolls, which include recreations of dolls released in the 1970s, began seeing release later in the year.

Collaboration between Mego & Hasbro

Marty Abrams, CEO of Mego Corporation, sits for a quick Q&A about the collaboration between Mego and Hasbro and how they came together to bring us this amazing GI Joe Mego Crossover: Let’s watch below:

Packaging

G.I. Joe x Mego Ninja Rivals Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow 2-Pack packaging is spectacular! You first start off with an outer sleeve over top of the box with gorgeous artwork featuring Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes going toe to toe with swords drawn ready to attack! It has the classic ARAH burst explosion in the background as well, which complete the classic scene. I just love this A Real American Hero vintage look to the front of the packaging!

Once you remove the outer sleeve, you reveal the two highly detailed vintage inspired Mego figures which are strapped to the package, complete with their back packs and a green ammo box marked “Top Secret” full of weapons and accessories! Then you find another amazing classic burst explosion is in the background of the strapped in figures. The bottom of the package features both the vintage Mego Corporation logo and the GI Joe logo across the bottom. You are then met with illustrations of both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadows head in a circle image on each respective sides of the package. The new “Mego X Gi Joe” logo adorns the top of the package. The back of the package has some lovely real product diorama shots with Snake Eyes and Storm shadow going at it and then images of their accessories. The cardboard on the box was a bit thin and flimsy, and plastic free so perhaps this is trying to be eco-friendly, so for that I forgive them.

Storm Shadow

Storm Shadow is executed beautiful in the most classic A Real American Hero Mego style you could very ask for! This classic version of Storm Shadow is the perfect blend of Mego GI Joe crossover! Dressed in a gorgeous soft goods white Ninja Gi, you can see the beautiful job Mego did recreating Storm Shadows ARAH outfit! Complete with cut off sleeves, a red Cobra logo on the left chest and a layered textured shirt underneath, Storm Shadows outfit looks stunning! The stitching is beautifully done, and the quality of the soft goods outfit is outstanding! His pants are of a similar soft goods material and his boots are a flexible plastic. His wrists are wrapped in soft goods material as well, giving him a realistic Ninja look! I absolutely love this version of Stormie! Being such a vintage Mego fan, this is now my favorite modern interpretation of the vintage Storm Shadow by far! Storm Shadow also came packed out with all his classic accessories which we will cover below.

He includes a chest strap and belt which house his knife and ninja stars. The back of the chest strap has a holster to hold the clip of his backpack. His entire outfit front to back is a perfect Mego interpretation of the 3-3/4″ Vintage ARAH O-ring figure we all know and love!

Head

Storm Shadows’ head is made of a hard plastic, just like the classic Mego action figures, and has a classic Storm Shadow look, with piercing brown eyes and beautifully painted eyebrows. There are simple accent lines running across either side of his head and you can see crease marks where his nose and mouth would be, along with his ears. This was a wonderful interpretation of the vintage O-Ring version of Strom Shadow.

Chest, Arms & Waist

Storm Shadow’s Ninga Gi is beautifully made, as you can see the excellent detail in the stitching and design. The material they have chosen for his Gi is a gauzy like cloth that looks excellent as a Ninja Gi! The cut off sleeves are a separate sewn on piece and he is wearing a highly textured shirt underneath. The two differently textured textiles help to bring a richness to his outfit that were an excellent touch and attention to detail. The red Cobra logo is of a high quality as well and is brilliant executed on this Gi. His chest strap is a black plastic with a silver accent painted buckle on the front. The back of his chest strap has a molded plastic holster to slip the bracket of his backpack into to hold it in place. Storm Shadow also includes a highly detailed black plastic belt, which have pockets cut out to hold his small knife and 2 silver ninja stars, unlike the vintage O-ring figure that simply had these items molded and painted on. This was indeed a welcome surprise and a nice touch! His belt even includes the tie on the side just like a ninja’s belt should!

Back

Storm Shadows arms, wrists and hands are highly articulated as classic Mego Action figures have always been but is now incorporating the new band-less Mego body. His hands have a lot of detail to them and a very nice grip to hold the bevy of weapons he came with! The best surprise here is that his wrists are wrapped with an actual long piece of cloth ribbon so that it looks like real wrists wraps! These were beautiful executed, just like the rest of his cloth goods outfit.

His boots are very well done, matching the vintage O-ring Storm Shadow beautifully.

From the black visor on his face mask to the grenades strapped to his chest, to the red Arashikage logo on his shoulder, this all black outfitted Mego Snakes Eye is totally RAD! The Mego Corporation hit a home run with Snake Eyes’s outfit. With the varying materials and shades of black, his outfit has a lot of interesting details. With various belts, arms bands, straps, and holsters, this Snake Eyes is ready for action! And of course, Snake Eyes comes packed with all his classic weapons as well, which we will cover below.

Vintage Comparisions

When it comes to Mego’s interpretation of the vintage A Real American Hero 1980’s O-Ring figures, you can see from the photos below that they have done an amazing job translating the vintage 3-3/4″ O-Ring versions into Mego 8″ figures! Storm Shadow’s Ninja Gi, red Cobra logo, knife, ninja stars tucked in his belt and classic bow and sword holstering backpack, Mego did a fanatic job paying tribute to the O-ring version. Snake Eye’s black helmet visor, grenades strapped to his chest, uzi sub machine gun and classic sword are a wonderful call back to the vintage Commando Snake Eyes v2! From the accessories, chest straps and classic outfits, these Mego X figures are a perfect homage to their vintage ARAH GI Joe counterparts!
