Great Black Wizard MOTU Origins Club Grayskull Members Only Exclusive Preorder

This is one of those moments where being a longtime Masters of the Universe fan really pays off, because Mattel has officially teased the Great Black Wizard, a long-rumored concept that stretches all the way back to the MOTU Classics era and the iconic design work of Axel Gimenez, and seeing this character finally step into the spotlight feels incredibly satisfying. We first got a strong hint that the Great Black Wizard could be headed to MOTU Origins when saintgong posted images on Instagram that appeared to show a test shot of the figure, and that immediately set off alarms for collectors who have been around long enough to recognize how credible that source can be. Digging back into our previous test shot article, the excitement still holds up, especially since saintgong was also the first to reveal the Skele-Shredder SDCC 2025 exclusive test shot, which later proved to be completely legitimate, giving even more weight to this discovery. The Great Black Wizard has always been one of those deep-cut concepts that lives in the margins of Eternia lore, known to fans who pore over concept art and unreleased ideas, and seeing Mattel pull from that well again shows just how committed the Origins line is to celebrating every corner of the brand’s history. What really seals the deal now is that this figure is officially set to drop on January 9th, 2026 at 9am PT exclusively on Mattel Creations for members only, turning what once felt like speculation into a very real date to circle on the calendar. Until that moment arrives, it is hard not to appreciate how far this character has come, from concept to test shot buzz, and now to a fully teased release that feels tailor-made for fans who love seeing MOTU’s unrealized ideas finally come to life. You can now order this figure on Mattel Creations here!

January 9, 2026 Update: Great Black Wizard Official Images

The Great Black Wizard is shown in an aggressive forward stance, swinging a massive sword in one hand while lifting the Shaping Staff in the other, and I immediately get the sense that this figure is built to sell both magic and combat. Previously only teased through packaging art, this skull faced warlock was originally concepted by Axel Gimenez and now steps into the spotlight as a members only figure, outfitted head to toe in layered battle armor with a removable helmet that reveals the skull head beneath. The sculpted chest emblem, gold accents, and cape all work together as he moves through the pose, and I like how the figure balances sorcerer energy with straight up physical threat.

Shown in dramatic poses, the figure is balanced with the sword angled across the body while the gold shaping staff is raised overhead, and I like how the stance gives him a commanding presence without overdoing it. The skull helmet removable, revealing the skull head underneath, and that adds a lot of flexibility when switching up the look. The hard plastic cape hangs naturally off the shoulders, and the shaping staff is included as weaponthat helps sell the sorcerer vibe in hand.

Shown in package, the figure sits centered in the classic Powers of Grayskull style blister, framed by the glowing portal artwork with the name Great Black Wizard called out across the front, and I like how clearly you can see the full armor, skirt piece, and chest emblem through the bubble. Flipping to the back, the box art depicts him wielding his sword in an action scene that also features Sharella and Red Shadow facing off against him, tying the character directly into deeper into the Powers of Grayskull lore. It also appears that he has taken over the Snake Lair!

Great Black Wizard Concept and Test Shot

Wow, talk about a jaw-dropping discovery! It looks like saintgong from Instagram might have struck gold again, as he’s scored what appears to be a test shot for a potential upcoming MOTU Origins Club Grayskull exclusive Great Black Wizard! If that name sounds familiar, it’s because this mysterious sorcerer hails from the incredible mind of Axel Gimenez, whose concept art has inspired some of the most legendary designs in the MOTU Classics line and now the Origins line. What makes this even more intriguing is that saintgong has a solid track record as he was the first to reveal the test shot of the Skele-Shredder SDCC 2025 exclusive, which turned out to be 100% real! With a confirmed Members Only Club Grayskull figure slated to drop on November 18, 2025 on Mattel Creations, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for this reveal. If this turns out to be the real deal, we could be seeing yet another deep-cut character leap from concept art into collector shelves! Until we get official confirmation, let’s dive in and take a closer look at these test shot images of the Great Black Wizrd!

Great Black Wizard Concept

The concept of the Great Black Wizard came from Axel Gimenez, who is recognized for his dynamic art style and his ability to capture the iconic characters and settings of the MOTU universe. His illustrations have brought new life to the adventures of He-Man, Skeletor, and their allies and enemies. In the prolific days of the Masters of the Universe Classics era, Axel had come up with countless concepts for figures that were never produced as actual figures and the MOTU Origins lines is providing a canvas for his work to come alive in plastic.

Great Black Wizard Concept

The Great Black Wizard, one of Axel Gimenez’s concepts held over from the MOTU Classics era, was a skull-faced sorcerer and evil warlord from Eternia’s distant past. His magic gave Snake Face the power to turn victims into stone. He also created the dragon-human hybrid Draego-Man and took part in the Second and Third Ultimate Battlegrounds, fighting alongside the Horde, the Snake Men, Skeleteen, and the Unnamed One. Here is the concept that was meant for the Masters of the Universe Classics line.

The figure highlights a detailed sculpt with layered armor elements and clean paint separation across the body. The front view shows the torn loincloth with textured folds and battle-worn holes, while the purple armor contrasts sharply against the pale lavender skin tone. From the back, the deep violet chest piece continues with sculpted panel lines and a connection port, and you can see how the turquoise belt piece breaks up the darker tones. Up close, the side view shows the crisp skull details on the chest emblem and the metallic gold trim around the bracers and boots.

The figure has been teased multiple times throughout the MOTU Mini Comics and card art, often appearing in scenes that hinted at his arrival and built out the Powers of Grayskull storylines. His skeletal visage and arcane armor have been depicted in stories that expand on Eternia’s darker lore, suggesting his deep connection to the origins of evil magic. Seeing him fully realized in figure form ties together those long-running teases, bringing to life the art and illustration from card art and mini comics.

The Great Black Wizard figure shows off a striking combination of deep purple tones and bone-white details that immediately stand out. His chest armor features an intricate skull emblem framed by gold and teal accents, with sculpted cords adding texture across the design. I can really see the sharp facial sculpt here, with dark recessed eye sockets and pale blue pupils giving him that eerie magical presence. The tattered loincloth, gold-trimmed boots, and matching bracers round out a look that feels right out of the ancient wizard lore teased in the MOTU comics.

The thigh sculpt shows raised ridges and recessed panel lines that give it a mechanical look. You can see small molded shapes along the side that resemble built-in plating, with sharp contouring around the knee joint. The detailing continues around the back of the thigh, where the sculpt transitions cleanly into the knee armor.
