Gung-Ho Photo Review
We also took still images of of the Gung-Ho GI Joe Classified Series Retro Cardback figure for your viewing pleasure and did comparisons with his Version 1 counterpart and the vintage figure from 1983.
Cardback
Gung Ho’s cardback is a throwback to the vintage GI Joe line from yesteryear and you can spot subtle differences in the card art as the illustrations for the Retro Cardback series are new interpretations of the vintage art designs. For example, Gung Ho’s hat is more angular vs. puffy and you can see the redesigned chest tattoo that is a modified version of the Marine Corps logo.

In this review, we will show the newly released Retro Gung Ho in comparison to his version 1 counterpart!

Head Sculpt

The new retro Gung Ho sports a vintage style mustache and a clean shaven head, which is in sharp contrast to the version 1 GI Joe Classified figure. The eyebrows also seem thicker and the head scculpt just looks different in general but we are not sure if our eyes are playing tricks on us.

Hat

The hat design on the retro Gung Ho is also different, with hard angles and the logo that is tattooed on his chest in the center of it. It is a dark green color that goes nicely with the grenades on his lapels. The hat on the version 1 Gung Ho is a lighter green and has a chevron design in the middle of it. It also is a much smaller hat so it sits further up on his head.

Right Vest and Arms

The biggest difference in the both figures is the arm and vest designs. The retro Gung Ho’s vest features his classic, vintage look and has a very minimalistic design that features a grenade on his right lapel and a small pocket. The version 1 Gung Ho features a removable bracer and gloves and his vest design features a large plate of shoulder armor that hangs over his arm. His vest is also armored up.

Left Vest and Arms

The left arm and vest of the retro Gung Ho is the same as the right side but mirrored. In sharp contrast, the version 1 Gung Ho has 3 grenades on his shoulder, a black removable elbow pad, and armor that mirrors the right side of his vest

Chest Tattoo

The chest tattoo on the retro Gung Ho is MASSIVE compared to the version 1 release. They are the same design and it is great that they increased the size quite a bit on the new retro figure.

Waist

The waist pieces are the same although they are recolored versions of each other. For example the belt designs have paint paint aps that match the overall deco of the figure and the most notable difference is the lack of camo on the v1 crotch piece.

Legs

The legs use the same overall buck that is shared between the figures with paint aps being the overall difference. In addition to the paint aps, the retro Gung Ho features a holster on his right leg and a piece to hold his spare grenades strapped his his left thigh and a sheath for his knife strapped around his left boot. The shin armor is also colored a dark green vs. the metal plate look of his v1 counterpart.

Right Legs

Looking at the right leg, we can get a better look at the holster design on the retro Gung Ho figure. it is cast in a teal plastic and looks very realistic. The best that holds it on his thigh is very thick and it goes well with the figure design. The version 1 figure is lacking this piece and just features a different painted boot.

Left Legs

Taking a closer look at the left leg, the retro version has a thigh pack that holds 4 grenades for easy access to load his Grenade Launcher. The grenades feature a really nice gold paint app on the tips and black on the other end. The version 1 figure also features a thigh pack that is black with smoke grenade canisters in it. Finally, the sheath that holds the retro Gung Ho’s knife looks like it has two bolts or buttons on the side.

Weapons and Accessories
Gung Ho comes with a black figure stand, a knife, a small gun, a backpack and his grenade launcher.

Figure Stand
The figure stand comes with two foot pegs, which we usually don’t see in stand designs. It features the GI Joe star logo on it and the feet fit nicely in the pegs with no issues.

Gun
He also comes with a small gun that firs in his holster strapped to his right leg.

Knife
Gung Ho also has a small knife that fits into the sheath on his his left boot. The blade features a nice silver paint app.

Backpack
Gung Ho’s backpack is a nod to his vintage figure and is a simple design but is lacking the shovel that was sculpted on his vintage figure backpack

Grenade Launcher
His grenade launcher is really the centerpiece of his weapons pack out and it is a larger version of his vintage figure’s weapon. As a nice touch, they gave the strap a dark green paint app.

Geared Up
Gung looks pretty badass geared up and he will make an amazing addition to your GI Joe Classified Series shelf!

Vintage Figure Comparison
As the GI Joe Classified Series Retro Cardback line is the throwback to the vintage figure, there both of them side by side. The did an amazing job translating the vintage design into a 6″ scale figure with an updated, modern look! Of course there are some differences with the tattoo design, the belt, and the boots but they share so many similarities!
