January 29, 2023: WWE Superstars Walmart Planogram
We did some recon at the Walmart stores yesterday and discovered that WWE Superstars Series 4, according to a Walmart planogram, will be coming out in store the week of January 30, 2023. For those who are unaware, a planogram is a diagram or model that indicates the placement of retail products on shelves in order to maximize sales in retailer space, like Walmart and Target (although I’ve never seen a Target planogram, they must use them. Walmart is getting fancy with their planograms so in addition to action figure code names, we are now getting images, possibly to help Walmart Associates with their stocking of the shelves.
The image shows a photo of WWE Superstars The Rock, which is now reported to be part of WWE Superstars Series 4 and 5. The implement date for the Walmart reset is the week of January 30, 2023, which is tomorrow. The curious thing is that which is set to release online by March 3, 2023.
Thoughts on Distribution of the WWE Superstars Line
In chatting with charlie_5.5 (aka Carlos) from IG who moderates the MOTU Origins, WWE Masters & Superstars ~Fan Page, distribution for this line has been a mess since the beginning as Mattel has been a full quarter off from shipping the WWE Superstars line to Walmart. WWE Superstars Series 4 should have dropped in Q4 of 2022, but, instead, are coming out in Q1 of 2023. For example, Series 4 preorders were originally slated for October and November 2022 but they were pushed back to March 3, 2023. This could also explain the difference between in-store set dates and online ship dates.
Where to Buy
WWE Superstars figures are Walmart Exclusives and if you don’t want to chase them down in stores, they can be preored and purchased online. We have direct links to all of the figures in our WWE Superstars shop and Series 4 can be found below!
WWE Series 4 and 5 Assortment Changes
If you have not caught up on the assortment changes, check it out now! We wanted to first thank Charile_5.5 from Instagram (and the MOTU Origins and WWE Superstars Facebook group) for the tip off but it appears that Mattel has changed the Series 4 and 5 figure assortments from what was announced at San Diego Comic Con 2022 and Walmart’s preorders for this exclusive line. Mattel also posted official images of Ravishing Rick Rude and Earthquake so we can now see what the full Series 5 assortment will look like and the current throey is that Macho Man and the Rock will be part of Series 4 and Series 5. Although we don’t know the credibility of the source, the card back confirms the theory that The Rock and Macho Man will both be part of Series 4 and 5:
I actually asked Steve on Instagram and he said Rock/Macho will be in both Series 4/5. The pattern will likely follow in series 6/7 before it goes back to 4 figure assortments again with series 8. I guess the card backs are going to share some characters across two series so we’re not getting a full new set of 4 unique guys per series. Also Rock/Macho were hard to find in the MOTUWWE line so maybe they’re giving people a chance to find them across two series?Alan Chow
Series 4 and 5 Updates
There were 6 WWE Superstars figures revealed at SDCC 2022 and according to the back of the packaging that revealed back on September 1, 2022, Series 4 consisted of Typhoon, Mr. T, Macho Man Randy Savage, and The Rock! BUT…according to images of Ravishing Rick Rude and Earthquake posted on WWE.com, Macho Man Randy Savage and The Rock will also be in Series 5, making 6 figures across Series 4 and 5, instead of the usual 4 figures per series.
Series 5 Figure Assortment
Ravishing Rick Rude
Rick Rude, who was announced at SDCC 2022, will be joining Series 5 so let’s check out the official images found on WWE.com! Mattel even captured the smug look on his face, which was a common expression as his gimmick was a chauvinistic, arrogant man that often out the crowd down as he undressed out of his entrance attire. Rude as was also known for wearing elaborate, long robes to the ring as he performed a mock strip tease as he took it off so it will be great to see what his robe, if they include one) looks like in the coming months.
It is very apropos that Mattel decided to use Rick Rude’s wrestling tights from his Intercontinental Title Match with the Ultimate Warrior from Wrestlemania 5. What made this ring attire so special was it was Rude’s first and only IC title win in WWE history. Rude was known for creating special tights when he wrestled against various opponents and for this pair of tights, he included the IC Title on the front and an illustration of the Ultimate warrior on the back.
Earthquake, also announced at SDCC 2022, will be a part of Series 5! It is amazing to see Mattel adding their first tag team to the WWE Superstars line and it is an intersting choice (on the surface) that they chose the Earthquake as one of the first wrestlers. Actually, the Earthquake was part of a very successful tag team with Typhoon (featured below) so the opening salvo makes total sense! They did create the NWO faction with Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Hollywood Hogan as they wrestled as tag teams in the WCW but we have our first official WWF tag team! Because this line features the use of soft goods, we are expecting the black, red, and white ring attire to be soft goods to reveal Earthquakes singles competition in blue. He looks like he will also come with an extra set of set boots and kneepads so you can remove them and swap them out for both looks. They have also introduced a new figure buck to the line as not everyone has 20 pack abs lol. The only way Mattel can pull off both looks is make a one piece soft goods leotard as the figure would look odd with just a tank top and blue trunks.
One of the cooler aspects of Earthquake’s figure is that he can strip down his his original Earthquake character in the blue and you can dress him up in his soft goods to form 1/2 of the Natural Disasters tag team.
Macho Man Randy Savage
Born Randall Mario Poffo, better known by his ring name “Macho Man” Randy Savage, was a professional wrestler who achieved prominence in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and later World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Savage is known to wrestling fans and non-fans alike for his distinctively deep, husky voice and his trademark loud, drawn-out cry of “Ohhhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!”, made even more popular by a series of Slim Jim ads. For much of his tenure in the WWF, he was managed by Miss Elizabeth, to whom he was married on December 30, 1984. TMZ reported that “Macho Man” Randy Savage died in a car accident in Florida 20 May 2011 morning. TMZ spoke to Savage’s brother, Lanny Poffo, who revealed that Savage had suffered a fatal heart attack whilst driving his car in Tampa, which caused him to lose control and crash into a tree.
The Macho Man’s card art pays homage to Randy Savage as he is clad in his 1988 robe that he wore on Saturday Night’s Main Event! He is most famous for this slogan “Dig it,” which he would often use as a filler word during his promos!
He comes with his famous purple robe and several extra hands, the most famous being the raised index figure.
Decades ahead of his time in both the sport he dominated and the anti-bullying message he promoted with this garment, the Macho Man remains one of professional wrestling’s most celebrated figures. The presented robe is as flamboyant as its original owner, awash in gold and purple sequins that shout a “Macho Madness” slogan amidst a constellation of large golden stars.
Randy Savage Masters of the WWE Universe Figure
The Macho Man was also featured in the WWE Superstars line, like Mr. T! He was made to mirror Man-At-Arms and featured a removable helmet, large leg armor, a mace and battle armor!
Macho Man Randy Savage History
According to the WWE:
Few Superstars were as dynamic as “Macho Man” Randy Savage. His style — perfectly punctuated by his entrance music, “Pomp and Circumstance” — was only outshined by his performances in the ring, which led him to two WWE Championships, four WCW World Championships and a 14-month reign as Intercontinental Champion. Born Randy Poffo, son of wrestling Legend Angelo Poffo, Macho Man almost chose Major League Baseball over World Wrestling Entertainment. Poffo was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as a catcher after graduating high school. After years developing in the minor leagues, a collision at home plate caused an injury to his throwing arm, ending his baseball career.
Joining WWE in June 1985, Macho Man made such an impact that his services were in demand by the various managers in WWE at that time. But Savage introduced a young woman named Elizabeth to accompany him to the ring and manage him. With the First Lady of Wrestling as his manager, the Superstar’s first major achievement was reaching the finals of a one-night tournament, as part of the Wrestling Classic pay-per-view event in November 1985. The following February, after a lengthy rivalry with then-Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana, Macho Man defeated the WWE Hall of Famer to earn his first WWE title.
Savage became a WrestleMania staple early on, making his debut on The Grandest Stage of Them All at WrestleMania 2 where he defended the Intercontinental Championship against the intimidating and unpredictable George “The Animal” Steele. From there, he defended the title all the way until WrestleMania III when he fell short against Ricky Steamboat in what is considered by many to be one of the greatest matches of all time.
Savage went on to dub himself “Macho King” after defeating “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan for the King of the Ring title in 1989. Carrying a scepter and crown, he called on Sensational Sherri to replace Elizabeth as his manager. Savage targeted then-WWE Champion Ultimate Warrior with a series of attacks in response to being denied a title opportunity, which led to a Career-Ending Match at WrestleMania VII. When Savage was pinned, Sherri attacked him as he lay helpless. Fortunately, Elizabeth was in the audience and rushed to his aid, sparking arguably the most romantic moment the WWE Universe had ever witnessed. The sight of Miss Elizabeth and Macho Man embracing in the center of the ring after all those years was one of the fans would not soon forget.Randy Savage
Dwayne Douglas Johnson is an American actor and professional wrestler known under the ring name The Rock in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential professional wrestlers of all time, Johnson wrestled for WWF/E for eight years prior to pursuing an acting career and during his wrestling career, he was integral to the development and success of the WWE during the Attitude Era, an industry boom period in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Rock’s card art features his famous cow vest he wore in 1999 and it also features him holding a mic, one of his greatest assets! The Rock had several taglines and the while the WWE could not put all of his taglines on his card, the best ones are represented!
The rock is decked out in his cow vest, pants, sunglasses, and he even has a pair of trunks with his name on it! During the Monday Night Wars between the WWE and WCW, WWE adopted the slogan RAW is War, which you can see on the mic!
Also famous for the People’s Eyebrow, the’ve sculpted that on to his face and even included some very large lamb chops!
He also comes with an extra set of hands and you can pose him in some of his most iconic looks as he often would jump up on the 2nd turnbuckle, face the crowd, and raise one closed fist.
The Rock Masters of the WWE Universe Figure
Like Macho Man and Mr T., The Rock as had a stint in the Masters of the WWE Universe line as “The Most Electrifying Man in WWEternia!” This figure introduced a championship belt to the line and he came with some energy effects and a black mace.
The Rock History
After a rocky (pun intended) start in the WWE debut in the WWE in 1996 at the Survivor Series, A young man then known as Rocky Maivia made his splash. As he made his way to the ring, broadcaster Jim Ross said, “Now there is gonna be the man, right there. That’s blue chip, right there.” There were some growing pains in the early part of Maivia’s career; fans would often chant “Die, Rocky, Die.” But once he transformed into The Rock, he became “the man.” According to the WWE:
He has been dubbed The Great One, The People’s Champion and The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment. Mere words fail to capture the essence of the most charismatic Superstar of all time, though the catchphrase “boots to asses” comes awfully close.
The first third-generation Superstar in WWE history, the man born Dwayne Johnson was destined for sports-entertainment immortality since birth, but his rise to the status of a pop culture icon was harder to predict. In the time since he made his debut as a grinning good guy at the 1996 Survivor Series, The Brahma Bull has won eight WWE Championships, headlined WrestleMania, hosted “Saturday Night Live,” written a New York Times bestselling autobiography, top-billed the popular HBO series “Ballers” and starred in films like “Fast Five” and “The Game Plan,” which have grossed literally billions of dollars. The amazing thing is, he’s just getting started.
Son of WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, the University of Miami football standout showed promise early when he won the Intercontinental Championship within months of first setting foot in the ring. From there, The Rock’s momentum never slowed, as he laid the smackdown on “Attitude Era” rivals like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Triple H while spouting off endless catchphrases that immediately became part of national conversation. With one eyebrow cocked, The People’s Champion would warn jabronis to “Know your role and shut your mouth” or “Just bring it!” before delivering his devastating finishing maneuver, The Rock Bottom, on the way to victory.
The 6-foot-5 competitor was soon fielding offers to star in films like “The Scorpion King” and “Gridiron Gang” thanks to the endless charisma and appeal he exuded in the squared circle. Despite a record-setting Hollywood career that included roles in the “Fast & Furious” franchises as well as “Pain & Gain,” “Hercules” and “San Andreas,” The Rock still returned to the ring against John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania XXVIII, won the WWE Championship from CM Punk in 2013 and defended it against Cena once again at WrestleMania 29 — all while proving to WWE’s newest generation of fans what their elders already knew: That he truly is The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment. If ya smellllllll …The Rock
Series 4 Figure Assortment
Like we alluded to earlier, with The Rock and Macho Man moving to Series 5, this leaves room for two more figures for Series 4!
Fred Ottman (August 10, 1956) is a retired American professional wrestler best known as Tugboat or Typhoon and teaming with Earthquake as The Natural Disasters in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Ottman is also well known for his infamous “Shockmaster” character in World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
The card for the Typhoon figure pays homage to Typhoon and features a hero image of this iconic pose where he is often photographed clutching his hands together.
Typhoon was a part of a very successful tag team called the Natural Disasters and they are giving him multiple ways to display his look! Before he changed his gimmick to Typhoon, he was called Tug Boat so it will be intersting to see if they include any soft goods to pay homage to that part of the wrestlers history. Typhoon comes with a soft goods tank top that is removable but, in reality, he wrestled in a one piece leotard but it is cool to see some versatility with displaying him with and without his tank top. This is also the first time they are introducing a larger buck into the line.
Typhoon also comes with extra sets of hands so you can give him many looks suited to how you like to display your figures.
Typhoon originally wrestler under the name Tug Boat until he changed his name in 1991. According to the WWE:
“Toot toot!” That was the call of Tugboat, one of the largest and most powerful men to ever compete in WWE. Dressed like an old-school sailor, the big man joined forces with Hulk Hogan in the early ’90s and helped The Hulkster battle the devious team of Earthquake and Dino Bravo.
It wasn’t long before Tugboat had a change of heart, however. In 1991, the powerhouse began calling himself Typhoon and joined up with Earthquake to form The Natural Disasters. Together, the two giants were a dominating duo and had many memorable battles with teams like Legion of Doom and Money, Inc. In 1992, the behemoths won the World Tag Team Championships and held the titles for three months. Soon after losing the gold, Typhoon would disappear from WWE.
In 2001, Tugboat made his return in the memorable Gimmick Battle Royal at WrestleMania X-Seven. While the big man hasn’t been seen since, he did take the time to talk to WWE.com for a Where Are They Now? feature in 2007, which you can read here.Tug Boat (aka Typhoon)
Mr. T (born Laurence Tureaud; May 21, 1952) is an American actor known for his roles as B. A. Baracus in the 1980s television series The A-Team, boxer Clubber Lang in the 1982 film Rocky III, and for his appearances as a professional wrestler, most notably at the first two WrestleManias. Mr. T is known for his trademark African Mandinka warrior hairstyle, his gold jewelry, and his tough-guy image. In 2006 he starred in the reality show I Pity the Fool, shown on TV Land, the title of which comes from the catchphrase of his Clubber Lang character.
Mr. T’s card art pays homage to Wrestlemania 1 where he is featured on the front of the VHS (remember those days!) slip cover! The back of the card features his most famous catch phrases, the most widely known being “I pity the fool” and if you remember his tagline from the Masters of the WWE Universe line, he was the Heroic Pitier of Fools!
He comes with several removable accessories, which the WWE Superstars line is famous for. His belt, cuffs, and gold chains come off and you can basically strip him down to his yellow wrestling trunks and you can’t forget the knee high socks!
He also comes with two piece camo jumpsuit that pays homage to his Clubber Lang character in Rocky 3.
The cuffs, gold chains, and knuckle-wear give him so many display options! Pose him with and without his belt for a myriad of Mr. T looks!
Mr. T Masters of the WWE Universe Figure
Mr. T is no stranger to Mattel and world of wrestling figures as he also was created for the discontinued Masters of the WWE Universe line as the ‘Heroic Pitier of Fools.’ In this line, they used armor from the Masters of the Universe Classics Jitsu figure as well as removable gauntlets that slip over each hand. The gauntlet on his right hand was a piece that was reused from a previous figure in the line, Roman Reigns while the one on his left hand was a new sculpt.
Mr. T History
According to the WWE:
“Few men in history have bridged the gap between the world of professional wrestling and pop culture quite like Mr. T. Pitying fools from the South Side of Chicago all the way to Madison Square Garden, the man born Laurence Tureaud anchored the very first WrestleMania in 1985 and helped create some of the most iconic moments from Hulkamania’s early days. First gaining national attention after winning an NBC competition called “America’s Toughest Bouncer,” Mr. T — with a shawl of gold jewelry around his neck and an unmistakable Mohawk — was recruited by Sylvester Stallone to play the villainous Clubber Lang in “Rocky III.” As the film’s larger-than-life antagonist, he uttered one of the most famous lines in movie history: “I don’t hate Balboa, but I pity the fool.” Mr. T’s turn as Clubber Lang led to a breakout role as B.A. Baracus on the NBC action series “The A-Team.” It was there that T went from a star to a bona fide 1980s icon with his own Saturday morning cartoon and breakfast cereal. While starring on one of television’s biggest hits, the gold-covered brawler joined up with his “Rocky III” co-star Hulk Hogan in WWE in 1985.”https://www.wwe.com/superstars/mr-t
