Crimson Twins History

Tomax and Xamot, A.K.A The Crimson Twins, first appeared in the G.I Sunbow cartoon mini series “Pyramid of Darkness”. The power hungry twins, leaders of the Crimson Guard and executives of Extensive Enterprises, were constantly trying to win Cobra Commander’s approval. Often dressed in power suits, but most notably recognized in their mirrored matching blue and crimson red outfits. Being twins, as such the stereotype, felt each other’s pain and would speak in tandem and finish each other’s sentences, oh’ brother!

According to Wikipedia:

Tomax and Xamot Paoli (also called the Crimson Twins or Crimson Guard Commanders) are fictional characters from the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline, comic books and animated series. They are the co-leaders of Cobra‘s elite troops, the Crimson Guard, and debuted in 1985. Their preliminary names were Movat and Tovam. The Paoli brothers speak in notable accents which show they are from Corsica.

The brothers were at some point members of the Unione Corse (Corsican Brotherhood), served in the French Foreign Legion‘s 1erREP in Algeria, then as mercenaries in Africa (Congo, southern Africa) and South America. While they relished this, they realized they would soon become too old and weak to be soldiers forever, so they changed careers and studied banking in ZurichSwitzerland.[2] Unhappy with the world of corporate finance, the brothers found the opportunities available in international terrorism far more suited to their abilities, and joined Cobra. Their specialties are in infiltrationespionage (military and industrial), sabotagepropaganda, and corporate law. Like the Crimson Guard that they lead, Xamot and Tomax also lead the “respectable” corporate face of Cobra as the founders, owners, and CEOs of Extensive Enterprises.

Crmison Twins in Suits

When not engaged in terrorism, they efficiently manage Cobra’s business affairs in shirt and tie. Their preferred mode of attack is through brains over brawn, using the law to serve the purposes of Cobra. They have covered their paper trail and connection to Cobra so well, that it is thought to be impossible to prove a connection between them and the terrorist organization. The twin brothers are mirror images of each other; Tomax’s hair is parted on the right side of his head and Xamot’s on the left; the piping on their uniforms goes up the opposite side on each twin; the brothers’ names are mirror images of one another. The only distinguishing mark between the two is a scar on Xamot’s right cheek. Tomax and Xamot share an empathic connection commonly known as “The Corsican Syndrome” in which identical twins are believed to be psychically bonded, in a manner similar to The Corsican Brothers (1844) by Alexandre Dumas, père. While this psychic connection is often useful, as it allows them to communicate wordlessly, finish each other’s sentences, and speak in unison, it is also a liability as they feel each other’s pain.

First released by Hasbro in 1985 Tomax and Xamot, came in a special mirrored 2 pack labeled ” Crimson Guard Commanders”. The action figures were a staple of the G.I. Joe A Real American Toy Line. They included laser pistols, a zip line and sky hook accessories.

As you can see, just like these new Classified Series figures, the vintage Tomax and Xamot figures were mirror images of each other. Dressed in matching blue outfits, and just like the Classified figures included crimson slashes, silver shoulder pauldrons, silver Cobra logos and cobras shaped belt buckles and shin guards. Of course Xamot had the scar on his face and his shoulder pauldron on the left side. Even back in 1985, these figures were stunning representations of the Crimson Twins we loved on the Sunbow cartoon series. They also came packed with matching weapons.

Head

Tomax Head:

Some may say he looks a little like Tom Cruise, I say that he looks like the perfect Tomax head sculpt! Hasbro absolutely nailed it when it comes to Tomax’s head sculpt! In my opinion, it’s the perfect blend of capturing the classic 1980’s look of Tomax but bringing him into the modern age. The detail on his hair is spectacular, with all those molded strands of hair, and that little bit of hair that is falling on to the left hand side of his forehead is the chefs kiss to his hair sculpt! His eyes are beautifully executed with the perfect shape and paint application, and that slightly raised eye brow and evil twin smirk on his face complete his classic Crimson twin look! I love the expression on his face, like he is up to no good!

Xamot Head

Xamot’s head sculpt as you would expect is kind of a mirror image of his brother’s but in a surprise move, is totally a unique sculpt of his own! Molded of course after the style of Tomax, Xamot still has that Tom Cruise-est look to him, but with his hair swoop on the right hand side of his forehead. His hair sculpt in the back is basically the same style as Tomax’s but if you look closely they are a bit different, so it is a unique sculpt to him. Xamot of course has his signature scar on the left hand side of his face which is both sculpted in and has a paint application to it. His brows are furred and he looks much more determined than his mischievous brother. Xamot’s facial expression is much more serious than his brother as he ain’t havin it!

Chest & Back

Tomax Chest & Back

Tomax is dressed in his classic blue outfit with silver and crimson accents. He is wearing his classic silver shoulder pauldron and crimson sash, which wraps down from his right shoulder around his waist. This is a separate piece which sits on his torso and Im sure could be removeable. His shoulder pauldron is of a nice silver plastic color and has rivets molded along the top edge to give it that extra detail. Tomax wear a silver Cobra logo on his left chest same as his vintage counterpart. his back is a simple blue design and his shoulder pauldron is pegged into the peg hole in his back. Tomax’s chest design is the perfect proportion for this figure and Hasbro nailed it! This figure is nostalgia all the way!

Xamot Chest & Back

Xamot’s chest and back design are an exact mirror image of his brother’s. With his shoulder pauldron and crimson sash wrapping around from his left shoulder. He also wears the Cobra logo, this lime on the right side of his chest. Everything else about his chest and back are the same as Tomax’s.

Arms, Waist & Legs

For this portion, we will look only at Tomax’s arms, waist and legs since Xamot’s are exactly the same, which his accessories attached on the opposite side.

Arms:

Tomax’s arms sculpt are very simple but his is perfectly ripped for his stature, with looks of muscle tone and details showing in his biceps and lower arms. He has sleeveless arms and is wearing a silver wrist bracer on his right wrist since this is the battle side along with his shoulder armor. (Xamot’s is on the left). His left hand features a black glove that goes up past his wrist and no wrist bracer here. (Xamot’s is on the right).

Waist:

Tomax’s waist sculpt features that signature cobra design on his crotch ( ya I said crotch) where it looks like a silver colored cobra’s mouth is open and is crimson red with horizontal lines on the inside. He is wearing a silver belt with some molded details and crimson stripped accents

Waist Accessories:

Just like the vintage figures, Tomax has a knife sheath handing from his belt on the right hand of his waist where you can place one of his really cool daggers into. (Xamot’s is on the left). He has a molded silver pocket on his left side for him to store money or other evil goods. (Xamot’s is on the right).

Legs:

Just like the vintage action figures, both Tomax and Xamot are wearing blue pants and are wearing shin guards. These are the same on both twins, so this is a place Hasbro had it easy to use exactly the same shared parts. They are molded straight from the vintage design to look like silver cobra heads with stripped crimson accents. They come from his knees down to the top of his boots.

His legs are symmetrical with the stripped crimson shin guards at the top of his silver boots. His boots have 2 black strapped around the back side and crimson accents on the top and tip of his feet. Tomax has a knife sheath on his left ankle again to place the second dagger in. ( Xamot on the right boot). Then his right ankle has a little molded pocket on it. (Xamot on the left boot).

Acessories

The Crimson Paoli twins came with just a modest amount of accessories, which is a pit rare with these massively packed out Classified figures. But they included the classic basics:

  • 2 Dagger shaped knives
  • MP5K Sub-machine gun
  • Removeable Magazine
  • Silencer

The dagger knives are very well done with a nice silver paint application on their blades. The vintage inspired MP5K sub machine gun is perfectly executed and includes a removeable magaizine clip and silencer, which has a hole in it to attach blast effects.

It’s surprising that they did not included the classic a zip line and sky hook accessories.

Tomax & Xamot GI Joe Classified Accessories

You can holded the Sub-Machine gun with one hand, or he can grip the extra grip and hold it two handed. The dagger is very nice and the Twinsies have various gripping options with those. They can hold it thru their fingers, grasp the handle forward, or hold it gansta style with the blade downward!

Vintage Comparison

These new modern Classified Series versions of Tomax and Xamot are a stunning tribute to their 1985 vintage A Real America Hero counterparts. As you can see, their blue and crimson red outfits are a perfect translation from the vintage action figures. Both have their silver shoulder pauldrons, red sash, silver cobra logos, cobra crotches and cobra shin guards. The neat thing about the increased 6″ scale, is that it allows them to actually make real useable accessories instead of molded on parts. For example, the knife sheathes on their waists and ankles. The new versions even include their signature sub-machine guns as well.

Also the vintage figures had very simple matching face sculpts that were mirrored except Xamot had a painted on scar. But the new Classified figures have any amazingly detailed face sculpts that show unique facial expressions for the Crimson Twins.

In the end, the new Classified versions of Tomax and Xamot Paoli are the perfect modern translation to our favorite evil Cobra twins!
