Lord Gr’asp and Duplico: MOTU Origins Figures Target Never Intends to Sell

With the lack of information coming from Mattel and confusing figure listings has us asking the question: Does Target ever intend to sell what are reportedly Walmart exclusive figures or is this ploy to drive traffic to their site? Admittedly, if it’s a ploy to drive traffic, it works because here we are reporting on MOTU Origins listings we are seeing on Target. Target has consistently received shipments of Masterverse figures but the MOTU Origins line is mostly miss, with MOTU Origins figures rarely being sold on their site or in store. The last wave that I can remember is MOTU Origins Wave 9 figure assortment that had 200x versions of He-Man and Skeletor, along with Mantenna and Pig-Head. The naked Stratos line is still warming the shelves but that’s pretty much it for MOTU Origins proper! The Turtles of Grayskull wave 1 figure assortment is a different story and a different line, from a certain point of view. What are your thoughts on Target putting up Walmart exclusives? This also begs the question, is Mattel changing their strategy with Walmart and the reported exclusives Lord Gr’asp, Terroar, and Necro-Conda? We hope Mattel is kicking Walmart to the curb like Hasbro did with their GI Joe Classified Series retro cardback line where they made the figures mainline exclusives. That might be a pipe dream but, for now, we will be watching Lord Gr’asp like a hawk to see if he actually goes up for preorder on Target or if he remains like Duplico, never going up for preorder and teasing fans with the hope that one day we’ll see him go up for sale. Walmart is the only place we know of in the U.S. where Lord Gr’asp is going up for sale as he’ll be going up, along with Terroar, during Walmart Collector Con March 2024. Although we’ve known about Lord Gr’asp popping up on Target, we’d like to thank the community for always keeping us on our toes with the listings they fine out in the wild.

Since Lord Gr’asp was announced as a MOTU Origins Walmart exclusive figure back on October 3, 2023, we’ve been searching hi and low for the official images and we finally struck pay dirt! Lord Gr’asp was supposed to be released as part of the MOTU spinoff line, the Powers of Grayskull, but the line was canceled in 1987 with many unproduced figures left on the drawing board! Lord Gra’sp was one of these figures and he is a mashup and a reuse of parts from several iconic Masters of the Universe figures. Originally one of several unnamed characters planned for the 1988 wave of the Masters of the Universe toyline, the character appeared on unreleased Mattel cardback artwork illustrated by Errol McCarthy. In 2017, the character was given the name Lord Gr’Asp and released as part of a three-pack with Terroar and Plasmar. Given that we saw King Grayskull and Moaty the Moat Monster using the Powers of Grayskull branding, it would be amazing if Lord Gras’p was carded as he was intended for the cancelled line.

Lord Gra’sp is made from the basic MOTU Origins body, Scareglow’s cape, Clawful’s claw, and Sssqueeze’s head. His paint app is black and yellow with mint chip green accessories.

He comes with a black snake staff that comes packed with other Snake Men and a snake shield. He’s has yellow snake skin detail running up his arm from his giant claw.

Lord Gr’asp October 2023 Reveal
What is cool about this figure, if you know the history, is that he was one of several unnamed characters planned for the 1988 wave of the Masters of the Universe toy line, the character appeared on unreleased Mattel cardback artwork illustrated by Errol McCarthy.

Lord Gr’asp is featured on the back of the Slamurai card art. So let’s take a closer look at who Lord Gr’asp is and where else he was teased!

In 2017, the character was given the name Lord Gr’Asp and released as part of a three-pack with Terroar and Plasmar.Lord Gr’Asp was part of a 2017 PowerCon exclusive3 pack that included Terroar, Plasmar & Lord Gr’Asp.

Lord Gr’asps bio reads: One of the Unnamed One’s elite generals, Lord Gr’Asp used his vile cunning to orchestrate his master’s escape from the Nameless Dimension. He first made an alliance with Horde Prime and persuaded him to destroy the Kaydex Crystal, damaging the barrier that kept the Unnamed One trapped. With a legion of Horde-armored Snake Troopers at his command, Gr’Asp then convinced Hordak and King Hssss to join forces on Eternia. Gr’Asp and his warriors escaped defeat during the Second Ultimate Battleground, but later joined forces with Lady Slither to reconquer Eternia after the Unnamed One’s demise. While Gr’Asp is a master of strategy, he prefers to lurk in the shadows and snatch unsuspecting victims in his Captor Claw rather than engage in a fair fight. While he claims to admire the stealth and skill of enemies like Slamurai and Zodak, he also viciously exploits the naïveté of younger opponents like Strobo and Prince Dare. Lord Gr’Asp hopes to resurrect both the Horde Empire and the Snake Men, but only to help him steal the knowledge of Grayskull for himself.

Lord Gr’asp also had some unreleased card back art from the unreleased Powers of Grayskull line. Here again it looks like he is battling Plasmar.

Lord Gr’asp & Terroar can seen in multiple locations of the Camo Khan Card art. Illustrated standing by King Hiss’ throne and also coming thru a portal with Camo Khan, Lord Gr’asp & Terroar along with Reptilax, an unproduced Classics concept, look ready to attack.
