Panthro ThunderCats Super7 Ultimates Review & Vintage Figure Comparison

Super7 outdid themselves so check out our Panthro ThunderCats Ultimates review and vintage figure comparison for this MUST HAVE figure!

Summary

This version of Panthro comes from Wave 1 of the ThunderCats Super7 Ultimates line and what a way to kick off the line! Super7 really leaned into the cartoon look for their Ultimates line and if these are like their previous releases from other properties, we know these figures will be top of the line! Panthro is a mechanic/engineer and pilot for the ThunderCats and, according to ThunderCats Wiki, his “name is a play on the words ‘Panther’, of which he is based, and ‘Anthro’, describing humans with animal tendencies and vice versa.” Panthro was originally released by Mattel as part of their ThunderCats Club Third Earth Classics series and the figure shares the same mold, with the biggest difference being the paint deco and the plethora of weapons and accessories that Super7 is known for. The figure boasts 13 points of articulation (neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hip, knees, ankles), which allows the figure to be posed in a number of action stances, as you will soon see in the ‘Geared Up’ section!

Box and Pack Out

Super7 is known for fantastic packaging designs and opening up one of these figures is literally like peeling an onion as it has several layers to it. This figure comes in a brown shipper box that’s not super exciting but once you remove it from its protective container, we see where Super7 pours a lot of energy into making the box design something special so let’s check it out!

Slip Cover

Like other Super7 figures, the package design includes a slip cover and sometimes, less is more in this case! Like we’ve seen with the Club Grayskull Super7 Filmation MOTU line, they can really pour a lot into the look and feel of the boxes. For their ThunderCats Ultimates line, however, they chose a very simple slip cover design that is brilliantly executed. For example the jet black box sets off the shiny ThunderCats symbol that is very reflective and you can check out the video below to get an idea of how this will look when you get it in your hot little hands! There is a small cut out near the name of the figure that sets the title off and we love the rather large Thundercats logo on the back of the slip cover.

Inner Box

It’s always magical to slide the slip covers off to reveal the window display with the amazing pack out of weapons and accessories, which surround the figure and set it off! The slipcover hides another ThunderCats logo above the name of the figure and I love how these boxes stand up for mint in box collectors as you can clearly see everything Panthro comes with! On the back of the box, there is an amazing ThunderCats illustration and a bio that reads:

“Panthro is the symbol of ThunderCat strength and wisdom and pilot of all of the ThunderCats vehicles – an unequaled master of martial arts, meditation, and mechanics. He is a strong, brilliant, and funny, though his use of nunchakus makes him a deadly adversary. Panthro’s enemies fear and respect him.”

Pack Out

Pantro and his weapons and accessories are neatly organized in layered plastic clamshell packs that keep them free from movement. With the amount of accessories that Super7 includes, they had to do a secondary plastic shell that sits behind the figure to house the spinning nunchakus and the extra sets of hands. The ties that hold all of the parts in the clamshell as easily maneuverable and you don’t need scissors to get them out.

Head Sculpt

Panthro comes packed with a standard head sculpt that is more serious and an alternate head sculpt that looks fiercer and angrier! His more serious head sculpt features a gray paint app for his head and blue/gray paint apps around the mouth and inner ears that looks like he was pulled right from the 1980’s cartoon! His eyes are more rounded than his alternate head sculpt, which you can see are more squinty and he is baring his teeth! He has dark brown eyes and a more elongated tear drop black paint app on this alternate head sculpt to create the affect they were going for, which also differentiates it from his standard, serious version. The eyebrows are also painted differently on the head sculpt, to help further set them apart. His angrier head sculpt is very reminiscent of his vintage figure design where he is also bearing his teeth!

Torso

Panthro’s chest also features a gray and blue gray color scheme with a nice pair of studded straps that go over his shoulders and secure with friction on his lower back. There are a secondary set of traps that go under his arms and around to the front of his chest, which is an update to the vintage figure design where he only had one set of spiked straps. The back straps feature one set of spikes and I feel like they could have put one more set on the back as it looks a little baron. The strap design feeds into a large belt piece with the ThunderCats insignia right smack dab in the middle of it. The belt has a nice texture on it and ties into the dark blue shorts that he is wearing if you have the corrected version.

Arms, Waist, & Legs

Before we dive into these parts, we wanted to make a note that Super7 did fix the paint deco on Panthro’s shorts as the original run from the factory had them painted a light blue, which is incorrect. If you are in need of replacement darker blue shorts, check out this article or you can buy them from eBay if you want that bonus head with yellow glowing eyes. Now that we have the shorts out the way, we can dive into the arm sculpts and Panthro has some pretty jacked arms that are asymmetrical. He has a silver studded wrist cuff on his right arm and a silver arm band on this left arm that sits right below his bicep.

Panthro’s legs are symmetrical, meaning they are same but mirrored parts of each other. The color blue matches his traps and the tassels around his boots are painted in a deeper blue to match his shorts. He has exposed thighs that are also very muscular, and his boots sit right below his knees.

Weapons & Accessories

Panthro comes with a gaggle of weapons and accessories, including, Nunchucks with a real chain, Spinning Nunchucks, a Thundrometer, a Key of Thundera, a wrench, a welding gun, goggles, a detonator, Interchangeable Hands, and an alternate head sculpt

Spinning Nunchucks

A spinning version of the Nunchucks was also included and it features the same design as the Mattel version but in red, instead of blue! Included in the pack in is a blue claw stick that can be attached to the red spinning disc, which gives the appearance of the the red claw stick spinning in action! The affect is a achieved suing a semi transparent plastic with red accents painted on it to give it a look like it is whirling around. The silver chains are also present as you can see a couple of links per claw stick to achieve the desired result.

As you can see, Panthro looks pretty amazing wielding the spinning nunchucks and there are so many displayability options here! It’s so cool that you can see Panthro through the spinning nunchucks and although he is obscured, this design mimics the physics of spinning nunchucks on a stationary figure. When Panthro has his chucks spinning off the side, you can also see the blue claw stick and how it attaches to the clear nub on the bottom.

Nunchucks

Panthro comes with a normal version of Nunchucks that consisted of the blue and red plastic claw sticks that are attached by a real metal chain! The chain is roughly 3″ long and it provides a great length where you can pose Panthro in all sorts of cool ways!

Thundrometer

Panthro also comes with a Thundrillium Detecter, which is a device which was used by the Thundercats in the 1980’s cartoon series to locate Thundrillium. It is a small device that looks like a comms unit, but it serves a very important role as Thundrillium is scarce. It features the Thundercats logo as well as an extra red splash of paint on the button.

Key of Thundera

The Key of Thundera, as featured in the Treasure of Thundera, is a golden colored key that has the Thundercats insignia in its center. The Treasure of Thundera which contained every secret of the Thundercats’ power in rare, valuable and magical relics of Thundera. The treasure items were kept in a special chest and housed in a safe chamber in the Thunderian Palace. The treasure remained buried on New Thundera until Mumm-Ra grabbed it from them and the Sword of Omens attacked him, breaking the chest and scattering all the pieces across New Thundera. The key itself the key is the only item that can unlock the Book of Omens and is an ornate golden key that has the Thundercats insignia inscribed on both sides of the key.

Detonator

Another accessory that was featured in the 1980’s cartoon series was Panthro’s detonator and the paint app on this piece is really great given how small it is. It features a gray/dark gray color scheme with some texturing to make the pieces stand out, given them a metallic feel!

Welding Gun, Goggles, and Wrench

Panthro also comes with a metallic gray wrench with a red accent stripe on the grip that was used by Panthro in the cartoon series along with a purple welding gun and a pair of welding goggles which were based on the protective eye wear in the episode All That Glitters.

As you can see, the accessories can provide his engineering look (versus a battle look) and there are plenty of ways to mix and match them to achieve the look you want! We are particularly fond of the glasses down look as he appears like he is heading off to create something cool!

Alternate Head Sculpt and Hands

The figure comes with an additional head with an angry expression that could be swapped with the normal head to achieve more looks so you can change up your display. There are also 2 extra sets of gripping hands which is nice because we find the closed fisted hands useless sometimes so it’s cool that Super7 was thinking ahead and given the plethora of accessories the figure comes with it, it makes sense!

Vintage Figure Comparison

When it comes to paying homage to the vintage LJN Panthro, Super7 hit it right on the nose! I know this version of Panthro is really supposed to be modeled after the 1980’s cartoon. But out of any of the vintage LJN ThunderCats figures, Panthro was the one that most resembled his cartoon version. So the Wave 1 Ultimates Panthro is really a spectacular tribute to his vintage feline counterpart! From his bright blue shorts, the red ThunderCats logo on his waist, to his teal colored boots and finally his chest straps with spikes on them, this Ultimates Panthro really looks like the modern version of the Vintage LJN figure! The stature of the figures are similar as well. Super7 did an amazing job also recreating the blue and red lion claw inspired nunchucks as well! I really love the job they did with this Panthro. Super7 just announced, Wave 6, LJN inspired versions of Lion-O, Cheetara, Monkian and Mumm-Ra. When it comes to Panthro, they already hit that LJN nostalgia button on the head! Be sure to check out our article on the upcoming Wave 6 figures as well! Super7 LJN Inspired Thundercats Ultimates Wave 6!

Rating: 6 out of 7.

Although this version of Panthro is the exact same sculpt as the first iteration from Mattel, the overall design, colors, and the gaggle of weapons and accessories makes this a must have figure for any ThunderCats fan! Super7 did an amazing job paying homage to the vintage and cartoon style of the figure and the large quantity of pack-ins provide so much versatility with this figure that you will NEVER get bored having Panthro on your shelf. The articulation of the figure is also well done and is in all the right places so you can also change up the poses and looks to your hearts content!
