By the power of Grayskull! We’ve been keeping a close eye on every piece of packaging art Mattel puts out for the MOTU Origins line, and for good reason. The card backs have become one of the best places to spot teases for upcoming figures, and Laser Light Skeletor’s card back art is no exception. If you’ve been following our coverage of the remaining vintage figures still to be released in MOTU Origins, you know that the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie characters have been a huge question mark for the line. Well, this card back art just made things a whole lot more interesting, because lurking in the illustrated action on the back of Laser Light Skeletor’s card are none other than Saurod, Blade, and the Skelcons! I love how Mattel keeps sneaking these teases into the packaging art. We’ve seen it before with Eldor on the Snake Lair box and Laser Light Skeletor himself on the Camo Khan card back, and every single time those teased figures have eventually made their way into the line. Seeing Saurod and Blade illustrated here is super exciting because these are the 1987 movie figures that fans have been wondering about ever since Mattel’s Brand Manager Damion hinted at SDCC 2026 that they were looking to expand beyond the original vintage line promise. And the Skelcons? Now that is a deep cut that I can’t be more excited about. Those skeleton soldiers from the movie would be an amazing army builder addition to the Origins line. While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, the fact that Mattel chose to feature these specific characters so prominently on the card back art feels very intentional. Could we be looking at the next wave of reveals? Only time will tell, but the evidence is really stacking up that the 1987 movie roster is on its way. Club Grayskull members get first access through Mattel Creations to purchase Masters of the Universe Origins Deluxe Laser Light Skeletor on October 12, 2026, at 9:00 am PT, while the preorder opens to everyone else on October 13 at 9:00 am PT. The figure is priced at $33, and Mattel lists October 12, 2026, at 9:00 am PT as the release/ship date. So let’s take a look at the Laser Light Skeletor box art and all the teases hidden within it!
Packaging
The packaging presents the card art above a red plastic tray housing the figure, with the illustrated battle between Skeletor and He-Man sprawling across the top half in vivid pinks and purples. The tray itself frames a translucent red staff alongside the figure’s copper-toned chest armor, which features an intricate mechanical design with concentric rings and ornamental detailing that looks fantastic against his light blue body. You will notice a couple of Skelecons on the left hand side joining the battle!

The card artwork is packed with detail, featuring Skeletor in his Laser Light armor front and center, purple hood and cape flowing behind him as he fires a red beam from his Havoc Staff. I like how the illustration also teases Saurod, Blade, and the Skelcons scattered throughout the scene, hinting at figures fans are still hoping to see join the Origins line.

Blade
Blade, evil master of the sword looked like a pirate and was featured in the was live action 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. We have yet to see Blade teased on any MOTU Origins art or packaging so we are probably a long ways away from getting this figure. Interesting enough, we could not find any information on Mattel’s trademark for Blade.
Blade was a mercenary, and one of Skeletor’s finest warriors. He was a swordsman of great skill, carrying two swords and an array of knives. He had a deep hatred of He-Man, and was eager to face him in battle.
Blade was sent to Earth by Skeletor, along with Beast Man, Karg and Saurod, to find the second Cosmic Key. There, Blade faced He-Man in one-on-one combat, although he retreated with the others when Teela and Man-At-Arms arrived. Blade was then forced to return to Skeletor in disgrace, and begged for one more chance; Skeletor instead vaporizing Saurod, as Blade looked on in horror. When Evil-Lyn intervened to save the lives of Blade, Karg and Beast Man, Blade accompanied her back to Earth.

Blade was released in the vintage Masters of the Universe toy line in 1987, and included a sticker saying “Featured in the He-Man Movie”

Blade was also released for the MOTU Classics line in 2014.

Saurod
Here’s a closer look at the card art for Laser Light Skeletor, and it’s absolutely dripping with menace. Those icy cyan eyes peer out from beneath a heavily riveted dome helmet, while a sweeping purple cape and dark segmented armor loaded with buckles, studs, and clawed gauntlets sell the sci-fi upgrade on his classic look.

Saurod is another character from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Movie. Saurod was originally released in 19876 and featured a sparking action feature from his mouth! He is a reptilian warrior who serves the evil villain Skeletor as one of his henchmen. Saurod is depicted as a humanoid lizard with a long tail, sharp teeth, and the ability to spit fire from his mouth.
Saurod was introduced in the live-action Masters of the Universe film released in 1987, where he is portrayed as a member of Skeletor’s evil forces. In the movie, Saurod is shown as a formidable warrior who is skilled in combat and uses his fire-breathing abilities to defeat his enemies. However, he is ultimately defeated by the heroic character He-Man.
Despite his limited appearance in the Masters of the Universe franchise, Saurod remains a memorable character for fans of the series due to his unique design and abilities. He has appeared in various merchandise, including action figures and comics, and has become a popular choice for collectors of Masters of the Universe memorabilia.

As you can see below, the trademark for Saurod has not been renewed since April 27,1987. So the status seems to be “DEAD” and unrevivable since May 30,1994. So this leaves us guessing as to if this figure will ever be coming to the MOTU Origins line?

Skelecons
You can see how the front box art extends into a full battle scene, with Skeletor’s beast-like maw wide open, revealing rows of jagged teeth framed by massive ivory horns and a mane of deep purple fur. A red translucent shield and a bone-hilted sword fill out the composition alongside another figure locked in combat, all washed in hot pinks and magentas that give the whole piece a wild, laser-soaked energy.

Here’s a closer look at a portion of the rear box art featuring a trio of Skelecons warriors rendered entirely in blues and cyans, each clutching long polearm weapons. I like how they emerge from what looks like a spectral energy field, their angular, almost canine facial features and pointed ears giving them a distinctly inhuman, soldier-class feel that contrasts with the larger characters flanking them.

We have yet to receive Skelecons in the MOTU Origins Line, but they were released in both the MOTU Classics and Masterverse lines! Pictured below is the MOTU Classics version. It would be amazing if we got the Skelecon Warriors to army build or to ride in the Fright Fighter! The Skelecon Warriors were released in the MOTU Classics line that came packaged with the Roton. The Fright Fighter was originally released as a vehicle from the vintage MOTU line in 1986.

Here we can see the Masterverse Skelecons that were released in 2024. I could imagine a MOTU Origins figure can easily be made using the Skeletor body as a base, with a new head, chest harness, and loin cloth.
