MOTU Origins ThunderCats Crossover Waves 1 & 2 Confirmed

At the end of Mattel’s epic panel at San Diego Comic Con 2024, the MOTU team teased the next crossover line! The ThunderCats will be the next MOTU Origins mashup and we are so excited for this! According to an anonymous source, we now know what Waves 1 & 2 will consist of. Set to be released sometime in 2025, Wave 1 will consists of … ready for it?! Wave 1 will consist of Lion-O, Cheetara and……. drum roll. Thunder Battlecat! Yes you heard us right, Thunder Battlecat! You might be wondering what a Thunder Battlecat will be, we explore this in the article below. Wave 2 consist of He-Man, Panthro and Tygra! So with the first 2 waves, we will have our core 4 ThunderCats!

MOTU Origins x ThunderCats Crossover Concepts

We love the ThunderCats line and we always think about the possibilities and use concepts as stand-ins before we see images of the actual figures. Thanks to Argenta-2008 Customs, a team of two brothers that started customizing in 2008, and Mr. Home Arcade, we can get a glimpse into a world where MOTU is mashed up with our favorite ThunderCats characters. Until more official news comes out, let’s take a look at what these MOTU x Thundercats crossovers might look like!

Packaging Concepts

We wanted to send a huge thanks to motucomic for sending us amazing digital renders of his Thunder of Grayskull packaging concepts. Although we do not know the official name for the line or what the packaging will look like, motucomic‘s designs combine both elements of the ThunderCats and Masters of the Universe worlds into a seamless card look and feel!

Here is a concept sketch that motucomic also drew up showing how he thinks the weapons and accessories might look! We love the ThunderCats symbol in the center of the axe and the Power Sword!

Wave 1

• Lion-O
• Cheetara
• Thunder BattleCat

Lion-O

Lion-O is the leader of the ThunderCats and an obvious first choice for this crossover line. Will they make a MOTU Origins style Lion-O or will this be more of a mash up with He-Man as the illustration by thundercats_classics suggest? A very talented customizer found on eBay, Argenta-2008 Customs has done an incredible job creating MOTU Origins style ThunderCats figures. You can see them below.

MOTU Customx on Instagram did an incredible custom Lion-O with a Sword of Omens/ Power Sword and Lion-O is looking a bit more MOTUesque!

Cheetara

According to our anonymous source Cheetara is the next figure confirmed to be part of Wave 1. Now we can see her reusing the Teela buck. We are not sure what this crossover figure would like like, but taking a look at the Accustomefigures.com or Funko Savage World version of Cheetara can give us an idea.

Thunder BattleCat

The last figure in Wave 1 is said to be Thunder BattleCat. Now you might be asking what is Thunder BattleCat, well we don’t have a ton of information on him yet, but what we do know is he won’t be a ride on creature. He is going to be a bi-pedal humanoid cat. Huge thanks to elpensa.bis for pointing out that Battle Cat became a ThunderCat in the He-Man/ThunderCats comic book crossover that was released between 2016 and 2017!

Based on his appearance in the comic, we could see a version of Thunder Battle Cat that could resemble his comic appearance. The talented customizer bombstaroutkast created a concept Thunder Battle Cat many years ago and if we get anything close to this, we would be thrilled!

The talented customizer, Joeamoto, designed this figure using the MOTU Classics Chief Carnivus figure as the base. He said on Figure Realm, “Making his debut is my latest custom, Thunderian Battle Cat-Man! Based off of the design in issue #4 of the He-Man/Thundercats comic that came out last week, I sculpted his head, helmet, parts to his arms, his shoulder pads, and part of the crotch area. Then I gave him the Thundercats symbol on his chest like he had in the comic as well.”

Here we have some amazing custom concepts for a Thunder BattleCat by Mega Customx. We can imagine perhaps that Thunder Battle Cat might either be wearing his signature mask, or might have wild hair like Lion-O!

Wave 2

According to our anonymous source, Wave 2 consists of:

• He-Man
• Panthro
• Tygra

He-Man

thundercats_classics did some digital renders of what a Lion-O / He-Man mashup could look like and those two make the perfect combination. The mashup is subtle, which we would want from the line and seeing the ThunderCats symbol on a MOTU figure is amazing!

Here we can see some packaging mock-ups by ThunderCatsNOW based on the thundercats_classics sketches. The card backs can be either MOTU Origins style with the Red Rock burst or like a vintage ThunderCats card back, which would be my preferred look!

Panthro

Panthro is the next main character in the core ThunderCats group. Panthro would be a cool mash up with perhaps Stratos, seeing that they are both grey characters.

Tygra

Tygra is another main character that needs to be explored. Now if we get a MOTU Origins Style Tygra, that would be great. But who could he be mashed-up with if he did get a MOTU mash up? Seeing as Tygra is the Architect of the ThunderCats, it would only make sense to mash him up with Man At Arms!
