Hordak & Grizzlor Evil Horde 2-Pack MOTU Origins Sketchbook Series Preorder

Revealed during Mattel’s massive October 2024 MOTU drop, we got official confirmation that the Evil Horde 2-Pack indeed are the concepts for Hordak and Grizzlor in a stunning box reveal for the 2-figure set! A shroud of mystery surrounded the MOTU Origins Sketchbook series as we were chomping at the bit to see which retailers will be carrying this inaugural set but that wait is over as highly anticipated set has gone up for preorder today! Target has put up the listing for the set and we’ll be keeping track of the other online retailers (if any) where this set becomes available.

February 7, 2025 Update: In Stock on Target

The Hordak & Grizzlor Evil Horde 2-Pack is showing in-stock for preorder on Target’s website at the time of this update. This set has been going in and out of stock all week but we just placed an order and the ship date is showing March 2, 2025. As always, be sure to check stock status after the jump!

January 21, 2025: Possible Preorder Drop Date On Entertainment Earth

Given that the Hordak & Grizzlor Evil Horde 2-Pack was discovered on Target’s website, we are hedging our bets that Entertainment Earth’s Drop Zone will be putting this set up for preorder on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at 9am PT. Apologies in advance if we are incorrect but there is no harm in checking.

This MOTU Sketchbook Series Horde Invasion 2-pack with Hordak and Grizzlor is inspired by concept art from the 1980s, not previously used for Origins action figures. These Masters of the Universe toys of the two villains are both designed at 5.5-inch scale with the modern posability of 16 movable joints, deluxe design details and removable battle-wear and weapons.

• This Masters of the Universe Origins Sketchbook Series Horde Invasion Grizzlor and Hordak will bring back fond memories of the 1980s but are based on concept art not previous used for action figures!

Hordak & Grizzlor Evil Horde 2-Pack In-Hand Images

Huge thanks to optibotimus, who was lucky enough to have the MOTU Origins Evil-Horde 2-Pack sent to him so he can review it on his YouTube Channel! We took a bunch of screenshots from his video as his camera is really sharp, which shows off all of the details!

Hordak

Leaning into his concept look and feel, Hordak has a light green skinned paint app and is loaded with body armor on his upper half!

He also has three horde symbols that are integrated into the design in various places, including his helmet, chest armor, and body armor. The Horde symbol on the back of his armor us embossed, giving it a cool look! There is also some detail on the back of his helmet that looks like the bottom of the Horde symbol.

The face sculpt has a sinister looking snarl and a touch of red that sets off the black in his eyes. His helmet covers most of his face and leave his chin open to show his facial features. The helmet also comes to a nice crest in the middle of his eyes and rests on the top of his nose.

The right arm has a mechanical look and feel to it, which compliments his arm canon very well.

His arm canon has a matte paint app and looks to be a gun metal gray, that ties into his belt and his boots! Speaking of which, his boots are unique and have a fur appearance to them. As optibotimus points out in his video, the way that the boots were designed makes his feet look pretty small.

Grizzlor

Looking more like an Elephant than anything else, the concept for Grizzlor is a very unique figure does not resemble the original Grizzlor we got in the MOTU vintage line at all!

Grizzlor’s head is sculpted very nicely and there is so much detail in it! From his elephant tusks and ears to his mechanical looking jaw, Grizzlor is one of the most unique MOTU Origins figures to date. He almost has the look of Trap Jaw but his mouth piece comes up to a single point around the sides of his face.

He comes with a piece of chest armor that has a large Horde symbol with Hordak’s face on it. The armor comes around his shoulders and ties around his waist.

He also comes with a reuse of the Terror Claws Skeletor accessories, but painted in the gun metal gray paint app, which ties into his thigh armor!

There is a dark brown paint app surrounding his eyes, which really makes them pop! The paint app on his iris’ really blend nicely with his tusks.

His thigh armor snaps on and off, which gives you some nice displayability options.

There is also a nice paint app on his claw and his books look very mechical, which tie in nicely to his mechanical jaw piece.

Evil Horde 2-Pack Box and Art Reveal

Roy announced and reveled the box and art for the 2-pack by saying, “INSPIRED BY ORIGINAL CONCEPT ART. Masters of the Universe presents SKETCHBOOK SERIES, featuring figures inspired by the original concept drawings of fan-favorite characters before they evolved into the final forms of Eternia’s greatest heroes and villains.” Here is the amazing 360 degree video he posted, which shows how the box and art came together! fetch.franciscoetchart & lpukhrambam also worked on this amazing creation! The hi-res images were also released and they look unreal!

Evil Horde 2-Pack Hi-Res Art Images

Roy followed up on his post from Saturday by posted the hi-res art that adorns the first MOTU Origins Sketch Book figure pack! Hordak and Grizzlor kicked off the series in amazing fashion and the hi-res art looks spectacular!

In a cool scene that features the duo plus the concept Skeletor and what we think is Vykron, Grizzlor is trying to take a piece out of him. The concept sketch for the Fright Zone is also featured.

The black and white illustrations feature a myriad of sketches of Hordak and Grizzlor and the money shots are on the side of the box.

Hordak and Grizzlor are brought to life as they are colorized, making them pop off the page!

The front of the box has a rather large window display and you can see the colorized illustrations of Hordak and Grizlor that are on the sides of the box.

The only illustrations that are colorized are the ones that pop on the sides of the box. The new angular box design is perfect to show them off!

Hordak Concept Art

It appears that the Hordak MOTU Origins Hordak figure is based on the concepts below. As the Battle Ram Blog states, “In this early concept (below), Hordak, while menacing, has the look of a post-apocalyptic thug, like a He-Man character crossed with something from Mad Max.”

This also goes along with Horde Trooper concepts as well and it would be amazing to see more concept figures come out for MOTU Origins!

Vast armies of Horde Troopers were also used during the Horde’s failed invasion of Eternia. The early Horde Trooper concepts look nothing like the vintage toy. As the Battle Ram Blog states, “As Mattel and Filmation worked very closely on the She-Ra series and its characters and concepts, the Horde Trooper concept is a no-brainer. An army for the main villain in the series, as well as a collect-your-own-army idea from toy marketing POV. In the script and concept, as well as the storyboard for Into Etheria, we get a look at an early design, which gives the characters a heavily-armored and barbaric look. It’s clear that these troopers (or Hordesmen) are organic beings. One is human with a scar on his face, another is reptilian, and the third is a hawk hordesman.”
